15 completions 496 yards, 6 tds, 4 tds over 65 yards Rich Caster 6 catches 204 yards, 3 tds John Riggins 87 yards rushing against the NFL'season #1 rush defense and an 80 yard reception for a td
I wasn't born yet......I wouldn't be old enough to be interested in football until almost 30 years later.I didn't start watching until around 2002.This is why I was so high on Rex because he had the most success since I became a fan of the team.
I agree one of the best games I ever watched, it would take the Colts 10 plays to score and Joe would throw an 80 yard td on the next play, Gerry Philbin went up to him and said Joe please take more time scoring, you're wearing out your own defense!
This game was pivotal in my Jets and NFL fandom. It's one of the handful of sporting events that I clearly remember and being excited about. I watched start to finish. When the game ended I flew out the house with my green Pixie Football looking for anyone on my block to receive a bomb. Who else remembers Pixie Footballs?
My point is that we are still celebrating the only success in the eyes of football history almost 50 years later. If it's not the Superbowl 3 win it's something Namath related. It became sad after 10 years...But almost 50 is another thing entirely.
It's a shit franschise, I'm just reminiscing about a great moment in Jet history, if it bores you don't read it
I love seeing old games like this, so thanks for posting - but I hate the way TV stations plaster every broadcast with news tickers and sidebars and 'what's on next' crap. Worst of all are the scores from other games and even other sports, repeated over and over and over again. Sorry, feeling my age.
I remember a lot of this game, I was 16 years old, what I remember most was the way Joe could throw a ball 50 or 60 yards downfield and hit Caster on the run between the numbers his receivers never had to adjust and fight for the ball. Perfect throws and catches. Interesting wide receivers, Caster a very big man and on the other side the smallest guy in the league Eddie Bell
Thanks for bringing back great memories. This game was instrumental in making me a lifelong Jets fan. I was 10 when I watched it. My three sons can point to this as the day their fan-hood was cursed. Thanks
Compare that with Vinny's performance in the 2000 finale against the Ravens: Namath: 15 of 28 for 496, 6 TD, 1 INT (NFL Record, 33.07 Yards per Completion) Testaverde: 36 of 69 for 481, 2 TD, 3 INT (NFL Record, 69 Pass Attempts in regulation) --That's 6.97 Yards per Completion. *Suggestion for next retro game thread: Jets vs Seahawks, 1986*
