Pretty good column this morning by Brian Costello of the Post. I'm guilty for sure. http://nypost.com/2017/05/29/christian-hackenberg-deserves-patience-from-jets-fans/
A decent read and echo's what a few on here have said, must be hard to be so vilified when you have literally done nothing wrong, interesting thath the writer thought he would have had easier passage at Green Bay etc
Sounds like he had a rough practice day early, and rebounded pretty well. I suppose that will be the norm of his young career. Inconsistencies. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Started off rough as Adams picked him off, but made some really good throws at the end of practice. I hate these beat-writers that are saying after 3 OTAs that the McCown looks better, well no shit ... the young guys barely got any reps so far.
Dealt with some receivers having trouble getting to the ball. Seen some video where coaches twice yelled at Wideouts to turn their heads not their bodies and both came short of beautiful Hack throws. During Team he had a pass tipped at the line which almost resulted in a pick by Adams and is probably a pick 9/10 times but I'll chalk it up to Get defense and good awareness by Adams. Hit Peake for a deep post but resulted in a drop. Really wish he'd get more reps. Splitting them up is understandable but dammit he's got the most potential.
Thanks for the synopsis. Guarded optimism appears to be the best recipe for the time being. The reps will likely come in time. Let him get comfortable w. his new mechanics along w. the new scheme...The interesting dynamic to all of this is that the whole fan base & media are collectively scrutinizing every move the guy makes..yet he really is more of a gunslinger at the end of the day. Perfection likely is unrealistic..it's more a question of if he can make enough big plays to offset some of the misfires.
Nobody should be surprised that the 15 year vet looks better than the 2 youngins at this stage. McCown has been around and has played for Bates before. We need to see the young guys make progress during the off-season and into the preseason. If they do and McCown is still McCown it stands to reason that whoever steps up between Petty and Hack will start.
Petty and Hack are pretty much competing for the right to be the starter when McCown suffers his annual multi-week injury. I give him 4 games tops.
This wouldn't be a bad thing either. Although the late August announcement that Mccown is the starter should surely send many of us to the ledge..a youngster stepping in after a few games would provide a natural means of ascension. This would actually be much healthier from a locker room perspective than Hack/Petty being outperformed by the veteran yet still being handed the job. The starting job essentially means very little if the rest of the team doesn't respect the move and/or wont rally around who ever is behind center.
I dont think it will come to that as long as Petty or Hack show progress. If the gap narrows by week 3 of camp you start the year with ABM. Starting McCown is same old Jets.
I'd be amazed if McCown is not the week 1 starter. If Hack is not ready, especially in a new complicated system, don't rush him out there. If he earns the job or at least narrows the gap considerably, then by all means start him.
Hack made some good plays today, I am sure today did good for his confidence. He needs to come out, continue to learn and play well. It could be a momentum booster for him. These reps are precious for Hack, going into TC with some confidence will help. If they do right by him now, I think he will be right there with McCown. That will mean Hack will be under center week 1.
We forget that Hack is only 22 years old. Maybe that complicates matters alittle bit..but if he does not win the job it may not be the end of the road depending on the circumstances. None of us want to see fog surrounding his prospects moving forward..ideally we find out if he's the guy by the end of this season..but let's remember that the guy has off the charts upside. Upside is far from everything but if he shows meaningful progress that falls just short of nabbing the job all hope may not be lost..though I can only imagine the threads being created on here & daily headlines should this come to fruition
That article as somebody else mentioned sums up so many of our posts, including my own. The redshirt year = reset. He needed to forget all the bad coaching and his muscle memory needed to be rebooted. The polarizing hype created by the media on top of what is already an unrelenting group of writers in NY for sure would lead to the dissecting of every Hackenberg throw in comparison to those by any other QB. Coming to a QB starved team that expects immediate Pro Bowl like results from day 1 or a bust you are label is given. The situation alone can prove to be too much but I think what Hackenberg went through at Penn St and the person he is can be a perfect match. The Jets have so far done a decent job keeping the media off his back and limiting access. They need to let the kid be and get the most out of his reps. Reps that were nonexistent last season. His play last preseason, IMO, had largely to due with the lack of said reps. Especially considering he was a 21 year old rookie. Veterans in the same situation struggle. In the end, as was written, give the kid a chance before you write him off! He has the extra drive and something to prove. Ingredients found in success stories, but unlike some of those success stories, Hackenberg brings top level talent to the equation. Usually players staring is such stories are not top tier talent, hence they have to work harder to overcome the odds. Hackenberg was the top prostyle QB prospect in the country just a few years ago. With his work ethic and skills, it's silly to just write him off. I think the signing of McCown and the decision to not draft a QB is a clear sign that Hackenberg will be given the opportunity to prove he can be the starter for the NY Jets. As the writer mentioned, it might not be week 1, even though I think that would give him the best opportunity to succeed, but he WILL get the chance. If the competition is even remotely close to being close, he should get the nod week 1. They need an extended look at him and as another poster mentioned .. it would be good to see him face the same team twice. Can he make adjustments? Did he learn anything from the first game? There's too much to gain for this team if Hackenberg shows flashes this season. Those that expect Pro Bowl like results from a young QB need a reality check. QB's that have such success in their first 2 years are extremely rare. What he needs to demonstrate is that he has a foundation to build upon and that he will continue to get better.
Agreed, for anyone to think that Pettenberg would be ahead of McCown in OTA's given McCowns experience and familiarity to Bates/Morton is unrealistic. The gap though closes immensely from May to August. Once they have the playbook and concepts down, the physical aspects of playing the position come to center stage. At that point, I think Pettenberg can both overtake McCown. I see the signing of McCown as just another tool being used to prepare both of these QB's for the opportunity to be the long term starter. McCowns presence everyday as an example and his eagerness to actually help Pettenberg and answer their questions is priceless. His presence will push them and offer them a guage of where they need to be in order to win the job. They will have a first hand example of who they need to be better than, a better example than Fitzwatrick. This Tuesday's sum up I think was better than last weeks. If Hackenberg keeps improving, Training Camp will be interesting .. weekly improvement will be key in winning over his teammates.
