That's why a back up plan is always a great idea. I didn't even know Dobbs was a aerospace engineer or something crazy like that.
It's calling it like we see it. It sucks, but he is here to do a job and help this team win. That is no longer an option. Sure this is his dream. However, having a back up plan is a great idea. Football, at this point, is a hobby. He's not guaranteed a long term career. He's 25 and has made $4,000,0000 already. Don't feel too heart broken.
Man, you're all heart. "Sorry kid, we have no use for you anymore. I hope you have something to tied you over"
The guy does not have an NFL body. It is probably why they took two WRs back to back. Althoug it was werird. two safeties, then two WRs. Whatever......Those guys will have to earn their keep. They will be covering receivers for a while out there.
He's not a "bum" because he stayed injured or because he was a bust. No player gets injured or "busts" on purpose. They do their best. Some have no luck or simply aren't good enough/don't have what it takes. That's not something to celebrate or a reason to mock the player/person. But I guess that's what happens when the focus is only on winning and character doesn't matter. It breeds impatience, cruelty, disrespect, lack of understanding or compassion, and an "anything goes" attitude, as long as fans get what they want.
another 2nd round pick wasted. yet, the genuis couldn't save a 7th round pick to redshirt a qb with some talent, like elway did with chad kelly. missing on 2nd round picks every year is no way to build a team. if hackenberg bombs, it will fall directly on the gm.
I am not a bleeding heart for all those that tried their best. Oh poor Geno Smith, oh poor Jace Amaro, oh poor Dee Milliner, oh poor Wayne Hunter. This is not the league of participation trophies. It is ok Devin, you did your best buddy. I honestly do not care. He provided nothing for the team. He was not entertaining to watch. There is nothing positive to report on his impact with this team. They all got paid to suck. They are all much more wealthy than 99% of people their age. I do not care about breeding this and that. Whatever the hell we are trying to breed has not worked. We are going on missing the playoffs for seven straight years and the biggest drought since the 80s. This is also a hobby for me. Losing and sucking balls is not enjoyable. I want whatever will help this team be fun and competent. Devin Smith was a bum. I was shocked and confused when we reached for him in the 2nd. He had 33 catches as a senior.... 33.... that is 5 more than Stephen Hill who played for a triple option GT team. That is a huge red flag for being extremely raw and being inconsistent. The kid was frail and about the only route he could run was a vertical. The kid never caught more than 44 balls in a season.... sounds like a solid 2nd round risk. I am not celebrating his injury. It is just on to the next one. See ya Devin, he is without a doubt expendable. Thats the name of the game. I do not have much sympathy for his dreams slipping away. Go do something productive now that this fell through. He caught 10 passes in the NFL (dropped several, fumbled a KR for a TD) and made $4,000,000 (400k/catch) doing so. He will survive.
It sucks for the kid, but his NFL career is likely over. No production combined with back to back ACL tears basically means that he's doomed. Does anyone know if it was the same ACL? I don't think he was a reach or a bad pick. He was incredible at Ohio State and was brought in to be the deep threat among several posesssion wide receivers. He wasn't simply a speedster, even though that was his forte. He made some incredible catches down the field at Ohio State. Players like him end up being body catches down the field ala another OSU alum in Ted Ginn Jr. and dropping a lot of balls as a result. That wasn't him. He tracked the ball extremely well and could out jump and out fight defensive backs rather than simply running under the ball. That doesn't mean that Mac gets a pass for him though. He ended up being a shitty pick, but at the time I don't think it was as horrible as you all are making it out to be. I wasn't high on Darby but I sure do wish we got Erick Kendricks or Denzel Perryman there. They're both ballers at the inside linebacker position. The mismanagement at that position has been frustrating with how neglected it seems to be. The front office will argue that with the selection of Darron Lee, but we still have no replacement for a strongside backer in David Harris. Lee is too small to fill that role on an every down basis.
It was the same knee he tore in 2015. He was fun to watch at OSU. But he didn't have a route tree, usually just ran verticals. Yes, he fought for the ball, but that doesn't translate the same against bigger NFL CBs. OSU pulled him off the field in running situations because he simply couldn't block. He was good at one thing and one thing only. His comparison was to DeSean Jackson. But that was real wishful thinking. DeSean had more catches as a freshman than Smith did as a senior... Smith, as a senior, had five more catches than Stephen Hill in his last year... who played in the worst offense for a WR (GT). Bout the only worse place to play WR in the NCAA is Army and Navy. DeSean had 65 catches in his last year, Smith had 33, and Hill had 28. We had been lacking a deep threat for a long time and we reached for one with the 5th pick in the 2nd round.
Feel bad for the guy but he never looked like a football player to me when he actually was on the field.
True enough. I didn't realize how lackluster the production was. The similarities to Stephen Hill are frustrating. Different general manager and scouting department and the same damn results.
He was never the same after the shattered rib/punctured lung incident early on in TC rookie year. He was starting to regain form before the first major injury December of 2015... He was used mostly as a deep threat at OSU and was very good at that especially in big spots...he showed fantastic route running ability pre-draft & showed that very early on. He does go down as another 2nd round bust though....maybe the modern version of Alex Van Dyke
Yeah, 3 catches average per game is terrible. What is even crazier is that he had 12 TDs on 33 catches. Every time he caught the ball there was a 33% chance it would be for a TD. That speaks volumes regarding the routes he was asked to run. Smith was not such a freak as to take it to the house 33% of the time. He was just simply asked to sprint straight ahead. A vast majority of the time he's wide open making shoe in catches. All of those facts speak of being extremely raw and flukey.
That he doesn't have what it takes to make an impact in the NFL. He is a JAG, who was a high 2nd round pick, that is now of no use to the football team. JAG = Bum.
What exactly would be the difference between "drafting to replace" and "building and growing players from within"? When you draft you are looking to build and grow those draft picks. If they don't work out you look for another. Gilchrist looked ok but he tore his patellar tendon in December so likely is going to be useless this season and only has one season left on the contract after that. Senseless to keep him around because it is basically paying him $15M for one season of work. Pryor looked decent in 2015 but not last year, if they can get a decent draft pick back they take it, if not he competes in camp. If he can't beat out the rookies then he will be depth. Not sure how this would be throwing them to the dogs, would you rather they keep under performing or injured players just to be nice?
