What you are saying makes sense. The Jets have been overloaded on defensive line and should have traded Wilkerson instead of signing him to a huge contract. That's what I thought before they signed him..
Then we should be prepared for Adams or Hooker, unless Fournette is valued higher than one of them and that player is selected first. In that scenario 2017 will at least be entertaining to watch as Jets fans.
Yes. But we made our bed with that and it looks like Richardson will be the one going. Hey it's great to have 3 awesome d-linemen but generally when you're so deficient elsewhere, what good does it do us? Plenty of teams win Super Bowls with average defensive lines.
Or trade down, which would probably be best for the team. And even though Fournette may have been given a higher grade than Adams or Hooker if they feel he is not the best fit for the team they move down the list. They may even feel that OJ Howard, though a little lower on their list, may be the best for the team to make the switch to the new offensive game plan and as an outlet for developing QBs.
ugh...I was looking forward to tomorrow and in a good mood but the memories of draft past are starting to haunt the day. LOL
I don't think teams think of BPA the same way fans do. Fans want it to be black and white, either BPA or need. That's just not how it is.
It's really just how much weight teams give to BPA and team needs, some lean heavily toward BPA, some towards need, it's finding the right balance between BPA and need that makes a good draft strategy.
Agree, but in Williams case he was so far and above BPA, that you couldn't pass on him. If there had been a need player rated more closely to Williams even if he was still BPA, I'd like to think the Jets would have opted for the other guy.
IMO any principle or philosophy followed or adhered to blindly can burn you. IMO people who do that don't want to have to do the hard work of thinking about that principle or philosophy as it applies to each situation or person. It's easier to see things in black and white, and just go with the absolutes. The problem is that the world doesn't operate that way. The world is full of gray. For example, it is wrong to kill another human being, but what if that human being was trying to kill you, or your wife, child or other family member? In that situation, it may not be "right" but it's justifiable Blindly taking the BPA is just flat out stupid. It's how the Jets wound up ignoring the offense, the OL, and the WR position for so long. IMO need should be a strong, if not equal, consideration. One doesn't want to reach for players. One obviously shouldn't take a vastly inferior player at a position of need over a clearly better player at a position one doesn't need. But when the two players are rated closely, then need should be the deciding factor. In the Jets case it was insane to keep drafting DL. The drafted what, 5 (or was it 6 of them) in the first round in successive or almost successive drafts. Yes, injuries happen, and sometimes it's fortunate to have great depth at a position, but imo having great depth at one position that's not even all that important in the grand scheme of things while one has major holes in several other positions and doesn't even have a quality starter is flat out insane.
With a roster full of Wilkerson, Harrison and Richardson are you upset we have Leonard Williams on our team?
People don't like bpa when they are looking to the draft to cure this year's issues. Bpa in the draft is to accumulate talent not patch holes.
Correct. He was far and away the best player available. Who was left at that point? I think Kevin White and Vic Beasley were the only other guys worth considering. That's an instance where BPA is a true BPA and the absolute correct move.
BPA only works when you can actually identify the BPA. Having seen Mac draft Devin Smith, Darron Lee, and Christian Hackenberg, I really hope BPA is just a talking point.
I disagree. White would not have been the best move obviously. But if you have Williams as a 4.5/5 as a DE and Beasley as a 4/5 at OLB (a position of need 5x more than DE) you make Beasley the selection. Both would have been excellent picks. Williams was more sure fire, but the analysis of BPA + need favored Beasley much more. Beasley should have been the pick.
You also have to take into consideration where the Jets were contract-wise at that point. Mo wasn't a sure thing and Sheldon is never a sure thing. I get what you're saying though.
that's not how BPA works if it's 2 positions that are essentially equal then you take the one of greater need. sometimes it's a no brainer (like we took williams 6th overall when we had shelden and mo since he was the best player in the draft) and in the long run it's working out since mo didn't play well and sheldon is close to being suspended for a year and has missed lots of time. williams has played way more then you would have expected when we drafted him and i'm happy to have him. kevin white went 7th - mostly injured and hasn't done much erick flowers went 9th. has been terrible and may be moved to RT. was a bottom 3 LT last year trey waynes went 10th - Who? exactly that's the top OT, WR< and CB avilable when we drafted williams instead, it worked out well for us. beasley would have been a good pick too though
It's a weighted BPA. If the top two guys are a OT and a MLB and you rate them a 9.5 and a 9.3 but you're o-line is already good to go with young guys, the BPA for your team is the MLB. But if that MLB was a 7.8 instead of a 9.3, the OT is the better option.
Fair enough. But 1) it's a dumb decision to not extend two previous 1st rounders, at least one. You don't need three 1st round DEs, 2) With Coples that makes four 1st round DEs in 5 years. Probably the stupidest fucking thing I have ever seen. 3) 3-4 DLs don't take you to the playoffs or win you championships, stud OLBs do. I am not saying you don't agree. I'm just going into the madness a bit further. What defense would you rather have? Richardson, Wilk, Beasley or Richardson, Wilk, Williams. The latter is practically useless. This team instantly becomes better if we had a force at OLB. Williams will be beneficial when Richardson leaves. But we had a chance at a stud OLB and we passed it up for a position of absolute luxury at the time. Williams is worth it though. Just though to leave Beasley. I would rather have three Day 3 picks on the DL and two 1st rounder OLBs than the other way around.
