There is a major debate on the player. Davis being inducted is certainly not a slam dunk. "Definite" is definitely not the best word to use. I've made the con argument on this board earlier this year. I don't feel like digging it up, but if you want to try to find it go ahead. At the end of the day, I would say no to Davis if I had a vote, but I certainly understand the argument for his induction. Davis being inducted will not bother me one way or the other. I'm more concerned with seeing the Jets win a Super Bowl, then seeing players (even Jets) get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I'm not interested in debating again. I'm exhausted after dealing with nyjunc in the ACC vs Big East thread. Once I realize I'm not winning a debate I'll exit it. nyjunc keeps going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and...
Klecko was great no doubt but HOF great is debatable. One thing that doesn't help him is he played and excelled during the same period the Giants won a SB and had the most dominating defensive player in football.
How many teams were in the NFL when Sayers was playing as opposed to TD??? Totally different era. The reason that I brought up the Sayers rule was due to the length of careers. Sayers was the first who was inducted because his career was cut short due to a major injury. 4956 yards rushing 57 total TD's for Sayers in 7 seasons, 3 of which were cut short due to injuries. 9,435 combined yards total. Over 1,000 yards twice. (14 game season) 7607 yards rushing and 65 total TD's for TD in 7 seasons 3 of which were cut short due to injury. 3 time pro-bowler. Over 1,000 yards 4 times, 3 of which were over 1,500 yards, 2 over 1,750 and 1 over 2,000. For the post season for TD, 8 games 1140 rushing yards, 12 td's. Every game he went over 90 yards, 7 games over 100, 4 games over 150 yards, 2 games over 175 yards, 1 game over 190. He wasnt one of those backs that disappeared in the postseason but excelled in them. I can understand why TD is in the semifinals and is a good bet to make the HOF in his first year of eligibility.
When any of these other Broncos backs carry a team to 2 SB's on their backs then we can revist their credentials. Short career, Bronco or not Davis absolutely belongs in the HOF. It's not the Hall of Accumulators.
I believe Terrell Davis and Marcus Allen are the only two RB in NFL history to win both league and SB MVP honors? Every RB to win the League MVP with the exception of Alexander, Faulk, Thomas and Davis are in the HOF. The List of RB with MVP seasons awards: Jim Brown Paul Horning Simpson Payton Campbell Allen Thomas Smith Sanders Davis Faulk Alexander Davis probably also has one of the top 5 all time NFL seasons and maybe the best post season of any NFL running back.
Thomas will make it in this year as well. Thurman Irvin TD and Taglibue will be the choices this year in what could be considered a weak class.
I think he was referring to the success their RB's have had in the Denver offense the last 10 years or so. But Portis is the only one that put up even comparable numbers to Davis in the regular season and he's come up small in the playoffs.
He didn't exactly carry the team. There was a Hall of Fame QB and a Hall of Fame TE (Sharpe will be inducted without a doubt). The WRs were very good and one of them may make the HOF (Rod Smith). Sayers did not have the kind of talent around him that Davis had. Teams could key on Sayers and he still would rip them apart. Again, I understand the argument for Davis. Let me ask you this- how many players are in the Hall of Fame based on only three Hall of Fame-type seasons?
Actually he did carry his team in the 1998 SB. Elway was 12 for 22 with 1 INT no TD passes for 123 yards, Sharpe had 5 catches for 38 yards. Davis had 157 yards and 3 rushing TD's. He was the single best player on the field that day with out a doubt. He completely dominated the game.
Yes, in the Super Bowl I would agree, but not for the season which is what I meant above. And I would agree he performed better in the postseason than any other running back in history. That, to me, is the best argument for Davis being inducted. I just hate how terribly short his career was. One more quality season and I don't think there would be any argument. I have read stuff from the people who actually have Hall of Fame votes and these people are really struggling with the Davis issue.
