Petty is a more viable starter than Hackenberg (at this time)

if history has taught us anything, there is no such thing as a sure pick in the draft. The good news is it also has taught us there are steals in the later rounds too

IMO there are two flaws in your responses to Pulsejet and I.

First, you say if Petty can't be QB 1 or 2 this year, he needs to go and his replacement needs to be drafted this year. They won't know what his position on the depth chart will be until after the draft. The Jets can't keep 4 QBs again, it's too early to give up on Hack, and they're not gonna cut McCown, nor should they. They would look really stupid drafting a QB and then Petty wins the starting QB job and Hack is close on his heels, or drafting a QB, cutting Petty, then Petty lights it up with a new team. They would then have wasted a draft pick on another QB, and he wouldn't get enough reps that they'd know what he was capable of with 4 QBs. If Petty winds up not being #1 or #2 on the depth chart, the earliest that they can reasonably draft his replacement is in the 2018 draft, not the 2017 draft.

Second, the most important thing is finding the QB. Value will take care of itself. In the long run, value matching pick doesn't mean spit. Of course you don't want to have to use multiple picks, much less multiple first round picks to get your FQB, but if you get one, it really doesn't matter if you find him in the 1st round or the 6th round. With the rookie salary slots, the difference between a QB taken in the 1st round and one taken in the 6th is not that much (relatively speaking) for the duration of their "cheap" rookie contract, and if one of them turns out to be your FQB, you're gonna wind up paying him plenty on his second contract anyway, so the value aspect is pretty much meaningless. If he doesn't, you don't lose a lot financially, but what hurts is the draft pick that can be used on a player at another position. Thus, imo you don't risk wasting a draft pick on an unnecessary QB before you even know if your other two young QBs are going to pan out. They need reps and work in our new offense and with our new OC and QB Coach for the Jets to determine. So far they've had precious few reps at all, especially with the starters. Those reps don't need to be lessened by adding an extra (4th) QB. It's bad enough that the reps will need to be split 3 ways, but it's a necessary evil. You'd also lessen the value of all of the QBs contracts by adding a 4th QB to the mix, giving them less reps, and then trading or cutting one of them following training camp. You're then lessening the chances of any of the Jets QBs doing well this season.

If the draft came after TC, then you'd have a point. Then if Petty or Hack looked totally lost and hopeless, then you could cut one and draft a QB, but taking one now would be counterproductive and unnecessary.

Your second point is predicated on the assumption that the FO still believes in both Petty and Hack, and has decided that they should kept and given a chance to win the job. But what if they've already decided that either or both Petty/Hack aren't good enough, and are only keeping them to use as a smokescreen to mask their draft intentions?

Even if your assumption is correct, and they're going to keep Petty, Hack, and McCown, I say it still makes sense to draft a QB IF they think he can be their FQB, since they may discover in TC that one of those three can't do the job. Also, if they think a draftee can be the FQB, why pass him over and let some other team take him?

If you have a shot at your guy you've got to take him.

Again, I totally disagree with your thoughts regarding the QB position. I think that you're so frustrated and impatient at this point that it's clouding your perspective.

To begin with, if the Jets FO didn't still believe in Petty and or Hack, I believe that they would have signed a FA QB who's a lot better than McCown.

I can't believe that you can't see how your logic is a fail. If they draft a QB, that's 4 QBs dividing reps in OTAs and TC instead of 3. That means that not only do Hack and Petty still not get a realistic or fair shot to win the starting job, but neither does the rookie, and it practically guarantees that McCown will wind up starting. McCown or whoever winds up being the Jets starting QB will be at a disadvantage and ill-prepared because he didn't get enough reps with the starters in TC due to having 4 QBs. If they draft a rookie, they aren't going to cut him or try to sneak him onto the PS unless he's just awful. They're also not going to cut McCown. That means that they would either have to keep 4 QBs again, which would be dumb, or cut one of Petty or Hack before or immediately following TC, and TC isn't enough to adequately judge either of them.

The only sensible way that they should draft a QB is if they've already written off either Petty or Hack and/or think a QB in the draft could start from day one. I don't think there's a single QB in this draft who could start day one, and I don't think they've written off either. It makes zero sense logically to draft a QB otherwise.

If they draft a QB, Petty is gone. There's no way we carry 3 developmental QBs.

You only perceive flaws if you are being reactive to the qb situation and ot proactive to the task of finding one. if petty was to prove worthy of a roster spot i would have no problem carrying 4 qbs again. there is no extra lineman/lb/db/wr/rb/te that might get cut that is worth more than finding the qb.

I agree that there's no way they carry 3 developmental QBs. That's why I don't think they will draft a QB. I think all the workouts and "interest" in the QBs is both Mac doing his due diligence in case there is one that they might like better than Petty or maybe even Hack, but also to drum up fear/anxiety in teams coveting one of the QBs, and interest in offering the Jets a lot for the #6 pick.

Especially since chances of McCown being injured along the way are 100%.

Considering that the status of the Oline really hasn't changed, I'd say the odds of McCown getting smashed before week 9 are pretty good. We signed 2nd tier FA's and retained the few talented Oline guys we had. Not exactly the opportunity a young Qb should be looking for. Especially after watching what happened to Petty last year.

I think the line can be OK, if the guys they have stay healthy. Problem comes when the line becomes a MASH unit and week to week new guys are slotted in with only a few days of practice. That was the issue last year. 3 of the 5 starters out.

I think the only reason they got McCown is as a safety net if both Petty and Hack crap out or are injured.

6M for a safety net? If that was the point, why didn't we just re-sign Geno? The Giants got him for 1.2M, and as bad as he is, he isn't any worse than McCown. Heck, Fitz would have been cheaper to re-sign.

Both are terrible figures to have in the locker room. They in no way, shape, or form help this team.

We are arguing "Geno over McClown" now?

    This is depressing.

    It's a wion\\\
    It's a wonder that Russel Wilson was able to start without getting all the 1st team reps. Dak Prescott too. I also don't see the logic that after being at every practice, team meeting, positional meeting, pre-season game and regular season game for 2 years, you don't think the FO has any idea whether Bryce can be the guy. For some people (not calling you out) it's never the new QBs fault. It took 4 years of Geno playing poorly and some people still think he didn't get a fair shot. From what I am reading, Bryce was bad last year because;
    Poor OC
    Poor HC
    Poor receivers
    Poor OL
    OL had major injuries
    Marshall gave up
    Didn't get 1st team reps
Had no chemistry with the 1st team
    Got no coaching

    Did I miss any?

I'll answer your last question first. Yes, you forgot that Petty was injured in preseason and missed about 6 weeks of practice. All the factors you listed are important. I don't think that either Russell Wilson or Dak Prescott would have succeeded last year with the Jets.

To answer your first question, I think Mac has an idea, but I don't think that Bowles has an effing clue, and neither Morton or the Jets new QB Coach were here last year, so who are those offensive coaches that should know?

Fact is we do not have a viable starter. McCown loses every game he plays. The other guys: Mystery 1 and Mystery 2. Everything is not relative. Saying mcCown gives us the best chance to win has nothing to do with winning.. We are up a tree, unless Hack proves he can play. No matter what Petty does he will get hurt. He has been knocked out of the lineup 3 times, I think. Missed two starts last year (got hurt falling on a fumble once) and the year before tore his shoulder when a LB bumped him.

Obviously you didnt watch very closely. The games Petty got hurt in the defense had free runs. The most famous of which was the Suh/Wake sandwhich compliments of our all pro oline. All things considered, Petty might be the toughest SOB on the roster.

[QUOTE="NCJetsfan, post: 3564305, member: 20404" If both are close to McCown, then they should be #s 1 & 2 on the depth chart, and McCown should be #3.

With regards to the Patriots game video being so bad, Petty isn't the first young QB that Belichick has made look bad/confused, and I'm sure he won't be the last. I don't think Gailey did Petty any favors at all, and the lack of talent and a quality OL made things even worse for Petty than they could/should have been.[/QUOTE]

a prety astute analysis. we are not going to the super bowl this year, so not playing petty and/or hackenberg means you are not giving either one a fair shot at getting an accurate evaluation.

given the rebuild of the team, you have to factor in the new oc, changes in the o-line, and the situation at tight end in order to
properly guage the quarterbacks. mccown should just be the #3 guy and hold for fgs.
