Agree to disagree. As far as the position not being as important, tell that to the Patriots. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
Interesting. Since I paid almost no attention to his performance last year, but saw him quite a bit when he was with the Bears, where he was exceptional, I can safely say that my opinion is not influenced by any such mirage. It may well, however be influenced by the fact that I gave up on ESPN a few years back, and have since become generally unaware of how well or poorly guys act off the field (Jets players excepted).
It's funny how everyone forgets that Bowles was a hot commodity 2 years ago, and just 1 year ago people were praising his 2015 work. Now one bad year and suddenly he sucks. Look coaches sometimes have bad years. it happens. Bowles did a lot of stuff last year that has turned him on much of the fan base, and rightfully so. But can we remember that this was just his 2nd season as a head coach? Can we remember that sometimes coaches need to develop as well? Bill Walsh won a total of 8 games his first two years, Parcells and Belichick followed their first SB wins by missing the playoffs, Cowher and Shula both went though bad ruts at some point in their careers. It happens. Let's calm the f*ck down and give these guys a chance to improve, and let's not act like the majority of this board loved the Bowles signing when it happened.
Oh please Myles Garret, Solomon Thomas, Marshawn Lattimore, Jamal Adams, Malik Hooker, Fournette one of the three top QBs, Rueben Foster if his background checks out are all more talented and have been higher rated for a while at more important positions. Don't forget we went 10-6 with literally zero production from our tight ends. Now I started this thread and I am wondering why we haven't looked at the likes of Jared Cook or Bennet and understand it is important but you do not pass on a star at a more valuable position for Howard. Does the TE position need an upgrade yes but Howard at six is not a good pick in my opinion. 1 good year and two blown coverages in the national championship game does not make you Tony Gonzalez
Garrett- Already stated he was an exception & there is no way he will be there at 6 Solmon Thomas- Not the playmaker Howard is Lattimore- chronic hamstring issues & apart if an extremely deep CB class that discourages the notion of selecting one so early Adams- Doubt he's there...and again...part of a deep class...I'd say he & Howard are similar level prospects Hooker- Only one year of production...shoulder injury concerns..doesn't tackle & takes poor angles. He's still a good prospect..but has holes in his game. Howard has no holes in his game. Foster- Off the field concerns & an Alabama defensive player...hard to properly evaluate those guys when there is so much surrounding physical talent. Additionally..he's been projected best as a weak side 4-3 LB...Isn't that exactly what Lee is already?? We can agree to disagree about a TE's impact..and I agree about the aforementioned FA TE's..but I maintain that there is very little better fit from a value/need perspective at #6 than Howard.
You asked me why it's a reach and I gave more than six players that are rated higher by almost everyone. Pointing out one or two things wrong with each prospect does not mean they are worse. Okay if the TE position is so valuable why hasn't one been taken as high as six since I believe Vernon Davis in '06... and how did that work out?
As far as Rueben Foster he would be an excellent pick. The guy is a stud and the NFL is changing adding him behind our d line at inside linebacker is probably the biggest bang for your buck. We need a replacement for Harris in the near future and this guy would add so much he's my third rated player and I heard the combine thing was bogus.
I would put CB QB DE/OLB LT LB Saftey D-line men as way more important positions than TE in fact I could probably name a few more. As for asking the patriots I believe they have pretty much every position i mentioned filled and won a Super Bowl without Gronkowski
Bowles was a hot commodity largely because of the job he had supposedly done with the Cardinals D and he had never been a HC before. I seriously doubt if anyone would consider him a hot commodity any more. Bowles was largely being praised because Fitz had a career season. Bowles showed zero learning or improvement from year one to year two, and he has a ton of "issues." I don't see one positive thing we can point to with regards to Bowles and the job he has done as HC. We have a right to our opinion and to voice that here. If you don't like it, too damn bad! You can disagree if you want, and point out why you like Bowles.
Solomon Thomas is not a fit on the Jets and he's no better prospect imo than Howard. Marshawn Lattimore is a joke. He started for one year and has chronic hamstring issues. CBs are a horrible value in the top 10. No CB is worth being picked there, least of all Lattimore. I like Hooker a lot, but he only started one year and is coming off of surgery. Hooker is more potential than production. Howard is both high potential and high production. Howard has had more than one good year. Hooker hasn't and Lattimore hasn't.
Yeah CB is bad value in top ten on a team that has absolutely ZERO at CB. Hooker is a much better prospect and until we sure up our back end we will get torched every game. How many 40+ yard passes did we give up last year? you expect us to be any better this year ignoring the secondary in the top part of the draft. I'll ask you one question when was the last time a top ten TE was good value? Maybe the fucking eighties honestly.
Would you prefer I give you comprehensive evaluations for everyone of those prospects? And for the record...when it comes to my opinions..I trust my eyes over what the "experts" or "everyone" is saying. I understand that may not mean much to a stranger like you...but that's how I roll. As for why there havent been TE's taken in the top 10...b.c there typically isn't great talent at the position. In order to be considered that type of prospect they must be elite receivers & very good blockers...."2 way" if you will. Most of the time guys fall short of that label within the evaluation. Howard does not. He's been a very good blocker...has elite level hands, great speed, attacks the seam & displayed such ability on a championship roster spanned over multiple seasons. Vernon Davis was considered 2 way based largely on workout numbers. He posted freakish 40,vert & bench press. He was a good college player but not a great one...he was never a great blocker & despite his triangle numbers didn't run alot of different routes.
There is a TON of depth and great CBs in this draft. The Jets could certainly get a starting CB in round 2, if not round 3. They could very easily sign Marcus Cooper, or any of a number of FA CBs as well to improve depth and competition. The pass rush is the most important part of improving the pass defense and cutting down on those long completions. Even All Pro CBs can only cover WR for something like 3 or 3.5 seconds.
This I can get behind and agree that pass rush is more important for us but whose available is the question? And we don't need a starting corner or safety we need a #1 corner or elite safety to cut down on the ridiculous amount of big plays we gave up last year..... or a premier pass rusher either or.
Vernon Davis's tape was out of this world. He was a monster. OJ Howard is a good prospect but I disagree with him at six... maybe if we trade back there are better prospects out there and I refuse to think that a TE who is rated lower by all EXPERTS (not some posters eyes) is going to solve our problems more than help on the backend. If you have a solution to giving up the most explosive plays by a defense in the league and can then justify taking a TE at six I would love to hear about it. But I don't see it happening with the way FA has gone so far.
I agree that we need an elite CB and FS, but as we know the Jets have a ton of needs, and they're not going to be able to fill them all this year, no matter what they do. It's not every draft that has a lot of excellent pass rushers, but almost every draft has some great CBs. Is Bradley McDougald better than Gilchrist? If so, I hope the Jets will sign him and send Gilchrist packing. He's calling the secondary signals, and imo it was his fault the secondary made so many mental errors and gave up so many long passes. Gilchrist blew some coverages too.
Jared Cook should get similar deal as Bennett, maybe less. A good left tackle (Beachum) and tight end (Cook) can be a security blanket for whoever is our starting quarterback.
