For those of you who will likely be in uproar over our inactivity lets take a look back into this storied franchises history of free agent blunders 1) Dmitri Patterson GM-Idizik Signed to replace Darrelle Revis. Thought to be a "sleeper" that had good advanced statistics (whatever that means). Apparently the Jets didn't do their homework as Patterson was a nut job who went AWOL and was subsequently cut in training camp. He never played in the NFL again after that, but did make news a year later after being arrested for Child Abuse. 2) Mike Goodson GM-Idzik Another "sleeper" who had a good stats in short spurts with the Raiders. Shortly after signing with the Jets Goodson and his buddy get pulled over on the NJ Turnpike and the cop finds some weed and an assault rifle in the car. Most organizations would probably dump him right then and there (think Patriots), but the Jets keep him around long enough so he can tear his ACL the first game back after serving his four game suspension. Goodson never made it back into the league 3) Damien Robinson GM-Bradway People forget that Robinson was actually considered a pretty good get in the 2001 offseason. However the people who considered him a good get were WRONG. Not only did this guy suck on the field, but he also brought a loaded assault rifle into the meadowlands one day. 4) Neil O'Donnel GM-Kotite Signed to one of the biggest free agent contracts ever at the time after leading the Steelers to the Super Bowl the previous year. Not great ROI however as he was one of the worst Jets QB's of all time on quite possibly the worst Jets team of all time 5) Chad Pennington GM-Bradway First of all I'd like to preface by saying Pennington was one of my favorite Jets of all time. That being said as great of guy as he was his contract really did some long term damage to this franchise. Bradway signed Chad a year earlier than he had to and that really burned him. Had he not jumped the gun after the 2003 season by signing him to a huge Top 5 QB contract we would have been able to take a wait and see approach in the 2005 offseason after his torn rotator cuff (possibly drafted Aaron Rodgers as well). If you recall in that offseason we traded Santana Moss in prime to bring back Coles (who only had a few good years left) to appease Pennington, and we also traded a first round pick for Doug Jolley and Mike Nugent. 6) Darrelle Revis GM-McCagnan In our GM's defense I truly believe this move was spearheaded by the owner who was trying to leverage the return of a beloved Jet to sell PSL. It might have sold a few extra tickets for Ambassador Woody, but not nearly enough to offset the $6 million he's getting this year for not being there and the $17 million he got last year for playing like shit and giving zero effort. 7) Ryan Fitzpatrick GM-McCagnan This was a situation in which an inexperienced GM got schooled by a very experienced agent. The Jets had all the leverage and were bidding against themselves. The only thing worse than having to watch a bad team all season for a fan is having to watch a bad team with Ryan Fitzpatrick playing QB. What makes it even worse is knowing that just like Revis he is being paid ($5million) for not being on the team in 2017. 8) Santonio Holmes GM-Tannenbaum Trading a 4th round pick for him was a great move considering he was tremendous for the Jets during their 2010 run to the AFC Championship. Signing him to a long-term deal was not a great move. Not only did he not produce like a #1 WR the one year he was healthy after signing the deal, but he was also a horrible teammate. Once he tore his Achilles in 2012 he was damaged goods and all but done in the league. 9) Steve Atwater GM-Parcells Atwater was an All-Pro safety in Denver and actually was part of the '98 Broncos team that beat the best Jets team of my lifetime in the AFC Championship Game. Parcells obvioulsy always liked the player and signed him to a three year deal, but unfortunately just like Revis he was a shell of his former self at that point in his career. 10) Muhammad Wilkerson GM-McCagnan Another situation where an inexperienced GM got schooled by an agent. The Jets held all the leverage with Wilkerson. Think about it- Franchise Tag, had depth at the position, Wilk was coming off a major injury, there was a trade market, etc. Nobody in their right mind thought that the Jets would give in and hand him a long term deal right before training camp since it really made no sense. The move was obviously to either trade Wilkerson at the draft or let him play one year on the franchise tag and prove he's healthy. Insteady they stupidly gave him long term money and he rewarded the team by playing like shit, missing meetings (including his own birthday party), and acting like a self-entitled punk in interviews. Meanwhile the DT the Jets let go to the NY Giants (puke) ended up becoming an All-Pro DT. Honorable Mention Buster Skrine GM-McCagnan Getting paid $9 million this year (almost as much as Janoris Jenkins) and is really a terrible player. Mark Sanchez GM-Tannenbaum Gave him an extra 12 million for "hurting his feelings" with Tim Tebow. At least the contract was written so the Jets were able to get out of it easily.
Dimitri Patterson is your #1?We didn't pay him anything or sign him to a big deal.Awful list...I would add Derek Mason to this list and Chris Johnson,Ed Reed. But the absolute worst free agent signing of all time is Wayne Hunter.
Come on, Sonny - when you use the words "of all times" don't you should look back past your own young memory? You expect us to believe that Idzik and McCagnan were responsible for four of the ten worst? Look up Blair Thomas for starters. Then beg the admins to take this thing down - you're embarrassing yourself.
Blair Thomas was a shitty draft pick, not a shitty free agent signing, and we gave a 5th rounder for Santonio Holmes, not a 4th...
How was Wayne Hunter worse than a guy that didn't even make it until our season preseason game because he quit the team?
Dimitri Patterson was no where near important or impactful enough to be number 1 on this list. Probably not even top 15.
Because lining Wayne Hunter up at RT was actually demonstrably worse than not lining anyone up at RT. Patterson= 0 Hunter = -1
You forgot Eric Green. GM Parcells was very clearly trying to sell out to win a SB. Tuna knew well in advance that 1999 was his last season with the Jets. Unfortunately, as good as Eric Green was, he couldn't stay healthy and caught a grand total of 7 passes all season...
not a bad list but i do have a few things. You can't really include chad on the list, The reason being was the GM was 100% right to give him that contract. it was bad luck with the injuries but had he not gotten injured he would have been the best QB we had ever. It was bad luck not a bad signing. he was a 1st round pick who came off a amazing season and was a franchise QB that we locked up long term. every GM would have done the same. But because of the bad luck we missed out on brees, rodgers and has cap issues. I'd probably add justin mcariens to the list. we needed a WR, we traded a 2nd rounder for him and gave him a big contract and he sucked. the jets have a tendency to give good money to players past their prime and it rarely works out. LT, CJ2k, reed, atwater etc. it's something we need to stop doing. I agree on holmes alot. we could have kept Edwards at half the price who wanted to be here and we let him walk. not that he did much after but still, it would have saved a lot of money. wilkerson shouldn't be on the list. it's very likely he bounces back big this season. he earned his money.
Ronnie Lott was pretty rank by the time he washed up here. And I always hated Reggie Tongue, who made a pathetic attempt to tackle Jerome Bettis in the playoff game following the 2004 season. That was such a close game, and Tongue had given up before he went high on Bettis and allowed himself to be bounced off. The slo-mo replay made me feel sick.
They didn't have to lock Pennington up with still one year left on his rookie contract. Look at how the Redskins are approaching Cousins.
they didn't have to, but it doesn't mean it was a bad idea. locking up a franchise QB is always good. what if we didn't and chad didn't get hurt and he walked away for more money. everyone here would be talking about how dumb it was to not lock him up. just because the end result was bad, doesn't mean the decision was wrong. If i go all in on a poker hand with a 95% chance to win and still lose, it wasn't a bad decision it was a bad break.
No Tebow!? How could he not be on this list? Granted he wasn't expensive by any means, but he killed whatever confidence Sanchez had and made us look like the Big Apple Circus. Not to mention the droves of Tebots that joined this forum...yeesh.
