Micah Hyde @ 26yo would be an ideal 2nd tier DB. Odd no one has mentioned him. He can play any position in the backfield, quick rangey guy with good instincts, solid tackler that can play down in the box, and he's gotten better each year. You go out and get Hyde, now you can be flexible in the draft in picking S or CB.
The better question here is....right now Toilet is assembling his old defense in AZ hoping to possibly play better, but what happens when he doesn't have his AZ guys or their too old? What happens when he actually has to evaluate talent make decisions and move forward for the betterment of the team? I say he falls flat on his face. We all Toilet sucks. Lets not pretend like he'll actually become a good HC. But only now we'll be left holding the bag from all of his horrible moves after Woody shit cans him at the end of the season....
That is my exact thought also. Our secondary would go from a weakness to a strength over night. Not to mention draft another DB and unload Skrine and Gilchrist
As long as they don't overpay. It's easy to get caught up in the market dynamics and pay Calvin Pace as though he was a potential NFL sack leader when in fact he's just a good player.
I think secondary is the best area of the team to address in FA. Yes..it's an expensive market...but it's market we actually have a chance given that are front 7 is generally held in high regard as is our Defense first head coach. Additionally...there isn't as many variables and moving parts as on O...these guys are pretty much plug n play.Without drastically addressing the back end..we aren't even close to competitive. That has to factor into things. We could essentially do a complete 180 in FA addressing the secondary. 2 new CBs & a safety.. You can then go into the draft thinking mainly offense...maybe an LB/pass rusher along the way..and that lends its hands to a trade down..which is really what this team needs. An infusion of youth & hope. Boye/Gilmore...fallback of Kirkpatrick...with Jefferson. Maybe that isn't a top 5 unit..but it's surely top 10...and we wont see the ball go over their heads repeatedly any longer.
Totally for staying prudent & not overpaying in FA regardless of the position. But the Jets maybe in a tough spot if they're looking to pinch pennies. Maybe they can leverage the strong DB draft class to keep the price low..but..when it comes to pass D...you either have a secondary that can cover or you dont. Odds are if you can cover...you are going to get paid. While we have the fall back of the draft..you can't go into the draft w. a crater sized hole in the back end. Again..you won't even be competitive. I hate to say it...but it kinda boils down to....either pay a premium for a legit cover guy....draft a legit cover guy early...or don't cover any 1 for a whole season.
Exactly my thought also. I'm very high on Bouye. Although I'm also very sure Sterling Moore is one of the most underrated players in the league; I love his play and he would probably be much cheaper...
EXACTLY RIGHT Jefferson et al Good Players for the Secondary (check), on the young side (check) COST PROHIBITIVE (FORGETABOUTIt) Trade that 3 headed garbage Skrine Gilchrist and Pryor...undo those deals GM...get us value at a discount NOT a premium Earn your salary Mr Mac
Sorry Kurt ..no more paying thru the nose for short term answers on like 1 player..i would rather use the $ from cuts wisely, spread the wealth and put out the entire dumpster fire lets draft somebody and leave it at that..sink or swim As you know I will NOT mind a 2017 sinking
I was confused earlier. Isn't Jefferson a SS rather than a FS? If so, why would the Jets be trying to sign him unless we're getting rid of Pryor? If they are planning on trading Pryor, I know of no better way to sink their leverage than let it be known that they plan on pursing another SS in FA. If the Jets want a FS, why wouldn't they go after McDougald of Tampa Bay or someone else rather than Jefferson?
