Just want to see what the board feels about this. There are three options. 1. Trade Richardson and our Comp pick 107 for AJ McCarron and Cinci's 3rd (we could do this for our 5th and their 4th etc). 2. Sign Glennon 3. Sign Taylor (if released from Buffalo) For the rigth price I'm not opposed to any of the three. I think the Mcarron trade is the one I like the most and then the signing Taylor.
Not a big fan of options 2 and 3 above. I think the Jets could probably get a bit more value for Richardson even in his current state. I'm thinking the Cowboys might give up their 2 (#60 overall) if the Jets went looking with a couple of other potential trade partners in tow.
Take it for what its worth, and it probably isn't worth much given who said it, but, Manish Mehta is on Joe and Evan right now and said he knows for 100% certainty that Christian Hackenberg will not start for the Jets in 2017.
The only good thing about that is that it would guarantee us going 0-16 and drafting the UCLA kid. The only problem is he'll pull a Peyton Manning and not come out and we'll have to draft a tackle or wr. Be the Same Ol Jets.
If they get a chance to draft Mahomes or Watson in the 2nd round, part of me hopes that they'll jump on it. The other part doesn't. I think they need to build the team, upgrade the talent, and hopefully, fill some holes. That part of me hopes they'll give Petty and Hack a shot in 2017, and if neither present clear evidence that they are the guy going forward, the Jets will take a QB high in the 2018 draft. As Colorado has pointed out, however, those kinds of plans don't always work out. I think there's a pretty good chance that Mac will take either Webb or Peterman in a middle round.
Don't necessarily agree with that in the sense that I want Hack to succeed, but starting an unexperienced QB over an established free agent QB would probably lead to having a top 5 pick.
I think there is a 4th possibility. It doesn't make much sense to me to unload as many veterans as the Jets have recently, with possibly more to come including Richardson, and then bring in a vet QB. What makes more sense, is that the Jets maybe positioning themselves to pick a QB at the top of the draft and start a rebuilding process around that guy who now becomes the team leader and face of the franchise. To me, this is a better long term plan than bringing in guys piecemeal and trying to make their talents mesh together. Get your QB, and then go out and get players who can compliment him.
That may very well end up being the case..but i don't believe a word Manish says anymore. He has displayed time & time again that he has an agenda & will do his reporting accordingly. Of course he prefers the Jets make some blockbuster move at QB rather than giving Hack a shot. He can write all sorts of speculative narrative about whatever perceived big name the Jets bring in. Hack is pretty much all behind the scenes & simply waiting to see what the kid has when he is given his shot. We all know Manish won't be on board for that.
A big NO to trading for McCarron, or trading away any of our draft picks. Due to price and ability of Petty or Hack to beat him out for the starting job, I would prefer Glennon. If the Jets sign Taylor, they might as well hand him the starting job, because I'm not sure that either Petty or Hack could beat him out. Taylor would probably also be good enough that he'd have the Jets consistently mediocre (in the 6-8 win category) so that they'd never have a good shot at getting a FQB. I probably wouldn't quit following the team if they signed Taylor as I would with Cutler or Romo, but should as the results would likely be the same.
Exactly which is why I take it with a grain of salt. Manish hides behind "anonymous sources" and has been proven to be false many times. I've been blocked by him on Twitter lol
Well said. I think the idea of Manish having 100% certainty (as if he has some insider knowledge) is laughable.
I feel like one of these guys will be available in the second and maybe even the third. I can't see Trubisky, Kizer, Mahomes and Watson all going in the first. In fact the case can be made none of them are first round selections. So for the Jets, if they can move Sheldon for a second or third rounder, or even better two picks (a 3rd and 4th/5th round pick for example), they should do it and take the QB with that pick.
The Rams & Eagles set some major precedence for finding a franchise QB. We'll see if the moves pay off..but hard to criticize the boldness of the 2 teams. I think there is definitely a case to be made for starting a true rebuild w. a QB b.c you ultimately want to build an offense around your signal caller's skill set. It really boils down to if the Jets like the QB's in this draft & where they can land those respective talents.
Well, if Hack wont be ready after 2 years in the pros, he maybe wasnt a very good pick. But he is young and they are being very cautious with him, which is a positive change in my mind. Rather than starting him year one like Geno and Sanchez.
The Jets appear to be taking a "development first" philosophy w. quarterback. It's an interesting idea given the demands on the position....maybe you give a guy 2 years to get his feet underneath him & hopefully remove some of the overall confusion you see from extremely young QB's.Careful though...Nobody is gonna have patience w. play clock/alignment blunders that young Qb's are typically cut slack w..when a guy has been sitting & "learning" for 2 years. It does lead to a gray area with drafting though. You still need to find the right talent at the position...but you're always gonna have certain fans & media in your ear wondering why you 2nd round pick is on the bench. Alot of folks are complaining now...with some level of justification..but I don't think anyone will be complaining if Hack is a competent starter come 2018. While I've come to grips that the odds are Hack isn't the answer...I still find myself going back to this kid's physical attributes & his intangibles. Can a 22 year old given 2 years w. top coaching & the right exposure improve his footwork & accuracy? Why not?
I agree. I mean I would not be surprised if Hack is on the bench as a primary backup, but I would like to see a competition between Hack and Petty. Not big on bringing in a high priced free agent
Thats the thing I keep thinking... I really discount the notion from the NY sports media that either Petty or Hack are busts because the Jets are taking their time with them. Both of these guys have real qualities and appear to be smart, mature and have natural ability. As we seen, Petty improved a great deal from his rookie to his 2nd years. Hack was considered a lock first round selection only 3 years ago. He has played at the highest levels afforded to him since he was a kid. I think both of these guys can be molded into competent starters. Its up to them really.
I really don't want to spend another pick on a QB in the 2nd round outside the top 36 where you have no idea what you got but the rest of the NFL all said no and the bad teams said no twice. If the Jets get past the 36 pick they need to take a solid player with their 2nd round pick. You can go broke in a hurry taking prospect QB's in the 2nd round and ignoring other areas of the team that need help just as badly and are more predictable.
Mehta is the anal fissure of the new york sports world. If he and Adam Schein could both cease to exist the world would instantly be a significantly better place.
