If he follows your prescription, he's gone after this year, and won't get a new GM gig any time soon, if ever. Because he will have clearly shown: A. He's mainly out for himself. B. He doesn't know how to build a team for long term success. He needs to have the balls to stick to his long term vision - assuming he has one - and continue building towards that. If his vision is the wrong one he'll get fired, if not this year then the next, but he will at least have proven that he has the well-being of the team first, and that he can stick to his convictions. If he's really smart, he'll take the lessons learned form his first two years and adjust his long term vision accordingly. For example, building a team defense-first hasn't worked out, so he needs to look at the other side of the ball. And he needs to lay down the law with Bowles and intervene when he sees him going off track, like allowing Fitz to stay in a game (and to keep his starting job!) after throwing 6 picks. And allowing the chaos and disrespect in the locker room. In short, he needs to act like a professional GM and not a puppet.
Playoffs isn't required this year. What Bowles needs to accomplish is continue to player development of the youngsters, which has been working. He needs to better prepare the team on game-day / make actual adjustments. If he can become a better prepped coach, the Jets could win 4 games this year and he'll still keep his job. But he must go with the youth movement.
Do you really think that there are NO impact players that will be there at #6 on both sides of the ball?
No, I don't. But, I was responding to the poster who, to my eyes, implied that there wouldn't be a player worth taking at #6 besides a running back. So, I wrote that IF that were the case, I'd rather trade down than take a running back.
Well thank God you're not the GM! You're right about one thing...thinking like that is akin to the way a drunken sailor would think. A GM is hired to make the tough decisions and do what's best for the team/franchise, and to build a sustainable winner. Spending like a drunken sailor is not what's best for this team, nor would it build a sustainable winner, nor is it realistic to think that with this CS and/or with Cutler or Glennon that the team would be a winner in 2017. Spending like a drunken sailor is what Tanny did, what Idzik would have done if he had a set of balls (he wanted to, but was either too cheap or didn't have the guts to pull the string), Mac did in 2015, partially because he had to, probably partially because Woody insisted upon it, probably partially because Bowles was clamoring for it, and maybe even he wanted to, at least a little. Where has that gotten the team? Nowhere. If he were to sign or trade for Cutler, it would be a clear indication that either Woody ordered it, and/or that Mac isn't NFL GM material, and he probably wouldn't ever get another shot as an NFL GM. Conversely, if he made the tough decision and said that the team needed to do an almost total rebuild and commit to a youth movement, I think a lot of owners would think that Mac is smart, that he operates in reality not in some fantasy land, and that he had guts. If Woody fired Mac because of that and were I the owner of an NFL team and in need of a new GM, Mac would be at the top of my list. I'm sure that most of the other owners know what a clueless doofus Woody is (the ones who don't are clueless doofuses themselves). They know what a clusterfuck the Jets have been, and the impossible situation that Mac was in with the rookie HC being an equal, having little or no young talent on the team, with cap issues, with a clueless owner, and the impatience of NY fans.
I couldn't possibly disagree with this post more. I don't know that Mac needs to have a "slam dunk" draft. He does need to have his first, and probably 2nd round pick to make an immediate impact (barring injury). Signing Cutler would be a fireable offense. I also disagree about Melvin Ingram being a slam dunk pickup. I don't think he's that good and he will probably cost a ton of money. The Jets aren't going anywhere this season, and probably not in 2018 either. By the time the rest of the team is built, Ingram would be 30 or very close to it. I see no point in paying a lot of money to sign a player in an effort to help the team win another game or two this season, when all that would accomplish is probably hurt them in their quest to get a FQB or their next LT in the draft next year.
If they sign Cutler I am not sure what I would do but I would absolutely hate the signing --he is a pig ! The guy has a strong arm but potatoes between his ears---I dont want him ! Signing Cutler would also speak volumes about Petty and Hack !
I have no doubts what I'd do if they traded for or signed Cutler. I'd want Mac, Bowles, Woody, EVERYONE FIRED and the franchise folded or moved to Vietnam.
It's going to be a long off-season with a lot of pitfalls to avoid. I just hope if the Jets pick up a vet QB they do that in free agency and without tying us to the guy for 3 years. The real problem that we have is that teams tend to do the same things over and over again and get caught in bad cycles in the process. The memory of 2008 to 2010 becomes better over time and ownership tries to get back to that very flawed era when the Jets were competitive instead of moving down a path more likely to bring success. The MO in 2008 to 2010 was sign a vet QB, sign a bunch of free agents on the line and at the skills positions, trade for a few more using future draft picks when you're coming up short anyway and then hope you did enough to open the window wide. We don't have the talent on the team we did as of 2007 and that's the flaw that will hammer us into the ground if we do that again. No Mangold, no D'Brick, no Cotchery, no Revis, no Harris, no Rhodes, etc. We do have two good defensive linemen plus another that we're going to have to trade but the talent on the 2017 Jets before free agency is well below what we had on the 2008 Jets.
Right? Nothing worse than having the important point you were trying to make about trading down in the draft distracted from with a typo.
I'm looking for someone to BECOME a FQB for this team...and i'm not so concerned w. finding the perceived glitchless can't miss type. Perhaps 2/3 of Watson,Kizer & Trubisky don't make it past 6...but if my coaches like that 3rd guy & a trade down is doable...that's the route I'm going. I think Trubisky will be the odd man out. The 13 starts & quiet demeanor will make some teams pause. In the Jets case...I think the Quiet straight forward "lead by example" type could work very well in NY. But he's gotta make all the throws, make the right decisions w. the ball & stay out of trouble off the field.I think Trubisky can do that. Yes it's still a gamble...he is not a perfect prospect..there is still risk..but it's a risk this team needs to make..and if it means moving down to pick 15 or so & acquiring more early picks..I'm even more for it.
Bills cut Tyrod Taylor. Jets sign QB Taylor. Pick RB Fournette with their first pick. I'd be happy going into training camp.
