Is part of both involved? I like the idea of Glennon on a 2-3 year prove it deal.

Long term play is to get rid of our high priced vets - pretty much everyone over the age of 28 either by trade or cut. Let FAs walk, We need to become the youngest team in the league.

Hire a teacher/motivator type coach who doesn't try to fit players into a system - instead he builds the system around his players' strengths to put them in a position to succeed.

Invest in scouting. Draft better. Draft speed and football players -not goddamn projects.

Make it clear that this is a multi-year plan and that it will hurt. Play young kids and accept losing (that's squarely on Woody and the billboard crowd - they need to be firm when we start bitching).

Keep fingers crossed that we will be ready when/if that franchise QB comes along - that is when you invest in FAs to round out your squad or move up in the draft to get that special player.

Sounds very similar to what Seattle did. We hired one of their guys as our GM and then shit-canned him two years into his plan.

I never see us being able to follow through with a rebuilding effort because we have no long term strategic plan as an organization. We're never going to win shit and we will always be an occasionally up but mostly down franchise relying on veteran FAs because we are too scared to let young players develop. Ever happy to make it to the playoffs but never capable of developing a great team.

    Go Jets, you fucking losers.

    Happy New Year everybody!

I like the post but I have to point out that you just described Jacksonville to a "T" and they just fired the teacher/motivator because he never got them off the rebuild path despite picking a top 3 pick QB in a draft that had a few of them.

The four youngest teams in the league this year are the Rams, Browns, Packers and Jaguars. Either we get a QB like Rodgers at his peak, or we suck? Why do we need to be the youngest team in the league?

And for that matter, the span between the youngest (Rams - 27) and oldest (Falcons - 27.02) teams in the league this year is 2 years. Jets are at 26.23. Patsies are at 26.07. Steelers, Ravens, Saints and Panthers are all older than we are. This seems overblown.

There is nothing to be gained in the NFL from losing. The only thing you gain is higher draft position in the first round, which is almost always available via trade for a player you really want, and is not that useful if you draft Vernon Gholston or Dee Milliner.

I don't believe this is true. Seattle just drafted incredibly well - in the span of three drafts, they got Russell Okung, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, RIchard Sherman, KJ Wright, Bruce Irvin, Russell Wilson, and Bobby Wagner. But they signed older FAs even before they got WIlson in 2012 - Marshawn Lynch being a primary one, and they had a veteran OL that they preserved. And Pete Carroll managed to corral the madness and scheme up a hell of a defense. What is it with all these ex-Jet coaches winning Super Bowls anyways?

All this to say, I'm not in favor of dumping veterans for rookies just to get younger, or because we need to play the rooks to see what they can do. Teams that do this successfully do it because the rookies are better than the veterans. This is usually because they drafted well. So draft well, and replace the veterans and get younger as a matter of course, not as a primary goal.

it's not overblown. 31 is effectively retirement age for most of the players in the NFL, assuming they were good enough to stick around that long.

The difference between a 25 year old roster and a 27 year old roster is the difference between a 5 year window to put something together and a 3 year window. Then you have random events like injuries and drug suspensions that you have to work in to the equation.

The Jets are the poster boy franchise right now for not letting all the value in the roster age out at the same time. Our best players are all over 30 except for the DL and Decker who is approaching that point.

The reason we're in trouble right now is that two years running we spent heavily on vet free agents and some of them have aged out in front of our eyes and some of them are going to do that in the next year or two.

Getting much younger is not just a good idea in a rebuild period, it's the only idea that will work. Plastering and spackling over the holes is just going to leave us with a worse problem in 2 years and if we get unlucky with injuries the problem will be staring us in the face next year, maybe even coming out of camp.

If that happens, if the Jets over promise and under deliver again you're going to see empty seats a lot earlier than you did this year and you're going to see a lot of tourists rooting for the opposition in the seats that are filled.

If the Jets present a rebuild as a 2 year plan, well that's under promising to start with in terms of competitiveness and any wins will seem like a bonus. Hopefully not enough of them to get the Jets off of the #1 pick.

Alternately the Jets could go for the quick fix and get insurance for the attendance problems likely to result by ordering a lot of opposing team merchandise to sell in the store, particularly in the back 10 next year.

When you have an older roster, it usually also means you have a lot of overpaid players on their second or third contract eating up a third of your cap. We need to draft well and and develop a core of young hungry players instead of veteran mercenaries.

We don't play in Giants Stadium anymore - we play in Metlife Stadium. Doesn't that make you feel better?

This year the Jets had $60M on the cap for players over 30. That's an insane number. They had another $60M going to players 28 and over. That's less insane but when you add the $60M spent on geezers it means the Jets had $120M committed to players unlikely to be on the roster in 2019.

There's no quick fix for the condition this team is in. However, an actual HC would get us a lot closer to that point.

The biggest need on the jets has been a real QB not a backup, the peaces has been there but no QB without one they not going anywhere. You can rebuild all you want. No Qb they're going to be a second or third place team as always. The problem is they gave the money to the wrong guys. I wish Drew brees,Aaron Rogers,Big Ben,Wilson or Cousins wore here to see how the Ny Jets looks with any of them in command. Even when Brett Favre came here and he was old but it did look good for a minute. To bad we never had that luck with a franchise Qb.

    Lots of good points

That group of QBs would win us a SB but no one is parting with them lol

Millions are spent on Defense and that gets us shit frankly

I say draft a QB every year till you hit paydirt

Develop the young players and start with the OL dammit

    Plus 1 Million

Why is this so hard to figure out folks?? The NFL is not astrophysics SMH

Don't you see that 32 teams are just mega large College Football Factories where your "transfers" are just trades and free agents

My point is if you have 3/4 of your team are Sophomores playing as good as or better than Seniors you are in great shape and you keep that formula going. You will have a competitive team since older guys will push themselves so they are not beat out by the youngsters. In a 2 year plan Break even in one year and hopefully make Playoffs the following year Then going forward you get better and better

Translation to NFL: Grow younger not older. Keep developing younger better talent players and minimize older Vets with something left in the tank. this will also save you money Do away with big money contracts if you can help it

That said DRAFTING is crucial so without GOOD MANAGEMENT (Coaches/GM, Scouting) its all for naught
