According to overthecap we are -2,492,750 in cap. CUT -Revis -Clady -Gilchrist -Harris -Breno -Henderson -ASJ TRADE Sheldon (get him off this team for any pick i don't even care anymore) We would have 40,410,665 mil SIGN - CB Trumaine Johnson (14 mil yr 4yrs) - FS Eric Berry (10 mil yr 4 yrs) - G/LT Luke Joeckel (5mil yr 2yrs) - Morris Claiborne (3 mil 2yrs) DRAFT Mitch Trubinsiky -Jake Butt - O line/CB/LB rest of the way
How about just cut every player not named Petty, Hackenburg, Williams, Carpenter, Enunwa, Decker, Peake, Lee, Jenkins or Powell. Replace everyone else with draft picks or UDFAs. Overpay a few free agents on short term deals to make sure we hit the cap minimum. We'll be better on opening day than we are today, and we'll have cap space to eat all that dead money and more to spare.
I also wouldn't mind Harris on a Vet minimum deal, so he can help mold the younger players. He probably wouldn't start and he CANNOT be on the field on passing downs.
First off, the biggest problem that needs to get fixed immediately is the absolute lack of talent and depth in the coaching staff. If we don't put some leadership with know-how and talent particularly in the defensive side of the ball we are fucked no matter who we bring in. I have never seen such ineptitude in trying to fit players to a system that does not suit their strengths at all. Todd above all has demonstrated he is hugely over his head and totally lost the rudder control of this team. Can not disagree with your recommendations except with releasing ASJ. He is the only tight end that can actually help us and catch the ball in traffic. Not his fault we did not use him hardly at all.
Who is Henderson? [EDIT: I had forgotten about Erin Henderson. I didn't see his name on the roster, and had forgotten that he's on a different list] I see no point in cutting ASJ. He's looked pretty good this season. Even if they did draft Butt, they'd still need a backup or competition, and ASJ is better than Bostic and Tomlinson. Cut Mangold and trade Marshall, and we'd have $55-$56 million in cap space. With Decker, Enunwa, Anderson, Peake, J. Marshall and D. Smith we'd have a plenty good WR corps. Add Butt or another quality TE in the draft to ASJ and either Bostic or Tomlinson and we'd have the best TE corps we'd had in a long time. Between those two groups, Powell and Forte, Petty would have plenty of targets. I'd be shocked if we got any of those players for that cheap, especially Berry. I don't think you could count on Joeckel to play LT or stay healthy. He's only played all 16 games once, and that was in 2014. We need a proven LT. Not a fan of Trubinsky. I think he'd be a project too. If you're thinking of starting him immediately, no thanks. He's had just one year of starting experience. Been there, done that with Sanchez. If you're thinking of redshirting him and letting him sit for a year, then would have more interest. Even if all your moves worked out exactly as you wanted, I don't think the Jets can be fixed in one off season.
not gonna get too detailed and crazy with a plan to fix this deplorable (LOL) franchise as we have not ended the season yet, but a couple things i would immediately do is sign enunwa long term, re-sign jenkins (TE), and the center, wes johnson. think i could also live with powell getting a fresh deal as well. now some of this will eat into the cap but as posted above, the jets can create some nice room by removing some of the players that have dissapointed or worn out their welcome.
OP's plan does not fix our glaring need for an outside pass-rusher (possibly 2 of them). How do you stop Tom Brady, Drew Brees, etc. without pressure from their blind side?
Agree with the cuts except cut mangold, keep ASJ. Berry will be franchised/resigned I suspect, he will not be available IMO sign some hold the fort guys for low-money deals at DB and OL to shore up the depth Would not draft QB in first 3rounds. first round pick should be DB or edge rusher. OL supposedly weak in this draft, so use 2nd-3rd rounder on OL. Draft a halfway decent TE in mid-late rounds. RB somewhere in there also.
We've needed an outside rusher for a long time. That's the force for sacks and disruption. It's an important part of the game. Our defensive blitz calls have been terrible. The HC and DC need to go!
The Jets need to rebuild. Keep a core of good young players. There aren't many. Draft offensive lineman in early rounds and build up a strong offensive line. I remember a couple of years ago when all the "experts" laughed at the Cowboys for drafting an offensive lineman in the 1st round. The Cowboys have been laughing ever since then. This team can't be fixed in one year.
Keep the following: Offense QB: Petty/Hack RB: Powell/Forte WR: Decker/Enunwa/Anderson/Peake/J Marshall/D Smith TE: ASJ OL: Winters/Carp/Shell/Ijilana/Qvale/Johnson Cut/Trade: Breno, Clady, Kellen Davis, B Marshall If Mangold wants to come back, cut a cap friendly deal for him. Defense DL: Williams/Wilk/McClendon/Simon LB: Lee/Jenkins/Mauldin CB:Skrine/Burris S: Pryor/Gilchrist/Tez/Middleton Cut/Trade: Revis, Henderson, Bishop, Catapano, Sheldon, B Carter If Harris wants to come back, cut a cap friendly deal for him. Cut Folk as well. After the cuts/trades, the Jets should have about 50mio in cap space. Spend 30 mio in free agency on a LT and a CB. Save 20 mio in cap room for next year. Draft: Fournette in first round. He is a game changer. No QB this year, wait till next year if Petty/Hack dont pan out. Too soon to tell if they will and noone in this class stands out. But Fournette is the best talent in years.
This is a 2 season min rebuild and if we are sensible we roll 17 cap space into 2018 .. You cut all the easy ones plus trade marshall on draft day to put with our 3rd and get into upper 2nd Rd . Restructure Mangold on a 2 year deal and Harris on a 1yr team friendly deal. Have decker, enunwa , Anderson , peake, smith plus vet wr be our wrs .... draft oline and de/ olb in first 4 rounds We sign 4 x mid range young fa and fill roster with min deals saving for a major spending 18 If we sign romo or cutler I may lose my 20 years plus with this team
I'd love to get UFA Trumain Johnson but there is no way the Rams are letting him go after seeing Janoris Jenkins walk.
