Impossible to even remotely give anything that could be realistic at this point. The system that he ran in college has no bearing on what he's being asked to do at this level. Strong arm and good size, but none of that will matter if he can't go through his progressions and learn to look off DB's and LB's. I am hopeful, but realistic that he may become just another footnote on the seemingly endless search for a legitimate franchise QB for this organization...
The next Mark Sanchez : Honesty it's really just too early to tell. One start against the 49's doesn't mean anything. Let's hope the flashes he showed can be built upon but an honest assessment of the one game, 75 pct bad , 25 pct good. Not reassuring but again , let's see how he progresses with first team reps. I hope for the best. He seems to be a good guy and a hard worker so I really hope he turns out to be a good G.B going forward.
Backup QB. No mater what happens down the stretch here I think they're trading for/signing a young veteran type like a Tyrod Taylor, Blake Bortles this coming offseason. That'll buy them some more time to evaluate Hackenberg see what they have in him.
I would love for someone to explain why they think Petty can't succeed? What is it specifically that he can't improve upon to be successful? Because from what I've seen he has all the tools, and he also has the intangibles. I'm not saying he's guaranteed to succeed, but I sure haven't seen anything that's a "death sentence" as some people are claiming. And I sure don't see how Hackenburg is the better option at this point - what has HE shown? And finally, there aren't any QBs known to be available that are any more guaranteed to succeed than Petty. If they were, they wouldn't be available. Until Petty shows me that he really can't handle the job, I'd prefer we stick with him and get him some help in the OL and RB.
He's definitely the most promising young quarterback we've had in a long while. Thinking back to guys like Bollinger, McElroy, Clemens, etc. and they were all guys with physical limitations in terms of arm strength or size. Geno had all the physical tools, but no pocket awareness and a rock between his ears held him back. Not to mention he seems to be pretty disliked by teammates. Petty brings good intangibles coupled with great physical skills and size. His big stature at 230 shouldn't be overlooked as smaller quarterbacks who take a beating early on in their careers can sometimes never rebound. Geno comes to mind in that he ALWAYS feels the rush whether it's there or not. Petty demonstrated a good ability to feel the rush and make adjustments in the second half knowing he had to get outside of the pocket given the shitty pass protection. I don't have extremely high hopes for him, but he definitely has the skills. We have to see if he can start reading defenses better and hitting the short passes in learning that not everything has to be a home run. I'm not comparing him to Luck, but that's a fault Andrew Luck still has to this day.
I think the thing that has held Geno back- and likely will always be true - is that he had success in high school and college scrambling, instead of hanging in the pocket and learning how to make plays. I think this is also true of QBs labeled "athletic" who fail to make the transition to a pro offense. Petty will run if he has to, but he hung in there more than Geno would have I think. QBs who run make things exciting, but they're not consistent, and it throws everyone off, including their own teammates. I don't have very high hopes for Petty either, but mainly because we haven't had a successful QB in so long, and I'm pessimistic. But as I said, I haven't seen anything that would DEFINITELY make him fail.
That's not true at all though. He rushed for 342 yards in three years as a starter at WVU. He wasn't a scrambler or a runner really, he just came into the NFL with the athletic ability to do so. He had success in college hitting wide open receivers and hitting tons of quick screens to setup the rocket passes over the top. Rarely was he making high-low reads of safeties and linebackers where the receivers were splitting the difference between them. He failed in the NFL early on because teams would blitz and hit him in the first half and his mental clock went off way earlier than it was supposed to as a result in the second half. He also killed himself early on with predetermined reads like he did at WVU which turned into a ton of pick 6's. Defensive game plans were pretty easy to draw up against Geno. Disguise and jump the underneath stuff, while blitzing early than backing off in the second half.
Petty has the tools to succeed, strong arm, athletic enough, good size and a bright kid. Comparing him to Geno is a waste of time. He will need a season to demonstrate his ability. Find him some help on the OL and he may be an asset for the club. Talent plus experience equals success. There are no shortcuts.
I think he has a chance to be something special. I feel much more confident in Petty than I ever was in the seemingly endless parade of third stringers that we all begged to see the field over the course of Woody's time as owner (Bollinger, Sims, etc.). Ultimately, it'll come down to his own ability to seize the opportunity and run with it as well as the organization putting him in a position to succeed. The odds are against him, especially given the organization he plays for, but I hope he can succeed. We'll find out more tonight.
If he turns out to be an average starter that's a huge bonus for a 4th round pick. People comparing him to Manning like that's settling - what a joke. I'll take a 10 year career as a starter and two SBs in a heart beat. The pick is a success if he starts next year while the Jets find their true starter and then becomes a back up for multiple seasons. It doesn't seem as if the CS or management are that high on him, so........... He has an arm, but he holds the ball too long, can't throw intermediate passes, and can't read defenses yet.
Wayyy to early to tell but I at least like the kid's poise back there. He's got that going for him early.
I think the Kid is gonna be special once the game slows down for him and he gets some talent on his OLine.
This team has never known how to develop a QB, and never will. The Jets suck, they will suck forever, and anyone who roots for them deserves the misery they get. Yay team!
Petty Injured by free rushers.. Fuck this team with a molten asphalt dildo. S! A! M! E! Same! Old!! Jets!!!
Petty will become a corpse if he stays on this team. Fck this CS and fck this FO. They want Hack? Give em Hack. I just hate seeing a young kid get abused by stupidity and ineptitude. This FO wouldn't know a good Qb prospect if his name was John Elway. Knowing this CS, they'd fck the kid up anyway. Yeah, Petty should just ask for his release and get the fuck out of dodge while he can still walk.
After seeing tonight's game, nothing. No QB will ever be anything except average at best on this team with this oline and these coaches. They are garbage. Actually they are worse than garbage. They are toxic waste, they make everyone around seem worse just by their mere presence on this team.
