I disagree with you Cman. Anderson and Smith are not going to be fooled with Anquan Boldin-they are both downfield burners in the Mike Wallace mold and putting on weight would not help their games. Also lumping Anderson and Smith together is not fair. Anderson may have a few drops but most of the time it's been a great play by the DB. He does actually seem to have decent hands. Smith on the other hand is a body catcher in the mold of Stephen Hill.
Well, if the only route either guy will be required to run is just "go" routes, you would be correct. Where it goes off the rails is on crossing patterns, quick outs, slants and screens. What both of these players have in abundance is speed. What they don't have is the ability to break tackles or come up with contested balls on a regular basis. We saw it last year with Smith until he got hurt. He got muscled off the field on sideline routes. He never really could get going after getting injured twice. He needs a bit more muscle mass in his upper body. That won't necessarily slow him down, but it might keep him on the field long enough for the coaches to evaluate him. As it is, no one really knows what Smith can do but what we do know is that the kid is both unlucky AND a bit fragile. He needs to bulk up. This ain't OSU, its the NFL. We're seeing a different pattern play out with Anderson. I would think a lot of it is because he has a Qb with a real NFL arm that can reach him on deep patterns. Anderson on go routes gets open alot and if our Oline could provide just a bit more pass pro, Petty to Anderson will become lethal. The problem comes in when he's asked to run routes that require YACs. Screens, quick slants and such. Once it becomes a wrestling match with a DB or a S, Anderson doesn't have the upper body strength to win the majority of those which might explain most of his drops in traffic. He won't break any tackles either as during this last game, I did see Anderson get ragdolled several times by Db's. You don't see Enumwa or Marshall gettingi ragdolled because of their sheer body mass. They're hard to tackle and bring down. Especially Enumwa at 225lbs. Point being, if all Anderson/Smith will ever be called on to do is go routes, they're fine the way they are. If they're asked to do the dirty work over the middle, unless they get more muscle, they're gonna be at a disadvantage.
yeah since anderson was an UDFA he was running most of practice with petty at QB. fitz and geno were working with marshall and decker and enunwa
everyone was confused. look like it was going to be a pick 6 and the defender just threw his hands up like WTF. thats why you attack the ball and not wait for it
That was one of the best catches I've ever seen a Jets receiver make. Enunwa needs to be extended yesterday.
Yeah, but you can still be an NFL star as long as there isn't a video of it. See also: Marshall, Brandon
That's really one of things i hope Mac does in the offseason. they need to lock Q up its crazy how much he's developed since his first year.
