i bring up this topic cause in the last 2 weeks i have seen a few teams dole out some contract extensions to talented players that are in their prime - obviously locking them up for several years.

IMO - it would behoove the jets to do whatever it takes to lock up cotch for the next several years. while not a stud #1 receiver - this guy looks like a solid 1A and may very well be the next hines ward/sterling sharpe kind of go to guy.
anyone know his present contact status.

    TIA

I'm sure they'll get him an extension this coming offseason if that is the case.

I expect Cotchery to get an extention this offseason. No reason not to. He has shown he is a great compliment to Coles.

Speaking of Coles, how much longer is his contract? He needs to be locked into at least another 3 years.

And if JMac continues to have productive games like he has lately, he may warrant a renewal as well.

 McCareins is signed through 2010 (or maybe 2009, I'll go look), but at his cap figure there is no way he sticks around unless he renegotiates down.....

BTW, Coles is good through 2009

From the way Mangini just spoke about Cotchery on Cold Pizza.... He basically said that he was the exact mold of the player that the front office wants to bring in... i would be very surprised if he didnt get an extension.

Damn, he is really locked in for that long? Wow. Our FO was worse than I thought, and that's saying something.

Good news on Coles then. Like I said, he and Cotch are a great tandem.

Which is exactly why Herm didn't play him. The kid wanted to learn, and work for a living. Herm couldn't have him screwing up the love camp.

This front office isn't stupid they will do what they can to keep him. With Coles getting up there in age he should be a high priority to get locked up.

In Herm's world jobs only open up for younger players when the older players prove conclusively that they can no longer play. That's why any franchise with Herm as it's coach will slide progressively deeper into the muck until it eventually goes under completely.

An NFL team, like any other competitive venture, requires constant infusions of fresh resources in order to avoid stagnating. That's why keeping Lamont Jordan and letting Curtis go was necessary if the Jets were to stay competitive. It's why letting James Farrior go to keep Mo Lewis another couple of seasons was such a bad move.

None of this is rocket science.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting a jersey for Rhodes. If he isn't here, neither is Mangini, and we have a whole different world of problems. To me, this is money well spent.

This was the year the Jets needed to find out about Cotchery. He's still under contract for 2 years so if the Jets bring him a good contract extension with some real upfront money he has to think about it seriously. 2 Years is an eternity in the NFL and he needs to protect himself and his family.

^Kind of like what Philly did with Reggie Brown.

The most notable Jet this offseason who could possibly get an extension has to be Vilma. Their were some rumblings after his Pro-Bowl year that his agent wanted a new deal but nothing happened.

Now, he signed a 5 year deal, and he is currently in his 3rd year...He could be someone who gets a contract.

And like Dan Morgan, who got like 5years 25 mil with at least $10 mil guraranteed...I'd sign for that in a second.

Cotchery and Rhodes should both be extended this offseason. They are both becoming our best players on Offense and Defense.

Two reasons why he should stay. He worked his ass to get to the top of the depth chart for this team, even if he went somewhere else and started, all the work he had done wouldnt seem as rewarding somewhere else. The other is while we see his great potential, Cotchery is a no-name guy in the NFL and while there may be a few coaches that know hes a beast, most of them probably wouldn't risk giving Cotchery a large salary so fast.
