James Hasty's Way Too Early Mock

We have a lot of holes to fill but trading down and dumping a few high priced veterans to free up cap space should allow us to bring in some young, talented players

    Trades
    1. Jet's first rounder (fifth overall) to Cleveland for Eagles first (22nd overall). Cleveland second (33rd overall), and Tennessee second rounder (48th overall)
    2. Cleveland's second rounder (35th overall, see above) for Vikings second rounder (52nd overall), Vikings third rounder (89th), and Vikings fourth rounder (123rd)
    3. Trade Vikings fourth rounder (123rd) for QB Tony Romo

    Draft Picks

22 (Phi via Cle). Charles Harris DE/OLB, Missouri
    38. Ethan Pocic OG, LSU
    48. (Ten via Cle) Royce Freeman RB, Oregon
    52. (Min) Cordrea Tankersley CB, Clemson
    69. Gareon Conley CB, Ohio State
    89. (Min) Dion Dawkins OT, Temple
    123. (Min) Trade to Dallas for QB Tony Romo
    151.Ejuan Price DE/OLB, Pittsburgh
    188. Darrell Daniels TE, Washington
    223. Nathan Gerry S, Nebraska

    Cuts
Darrell Revis CB - Dead Money $6,000,000 - Savings $9,333,333
Ryan Clady LT - Dead Money $500,000 - Savings $10,000,000
Nick Mangold OC - Dead Money $0 - Savings $9,075,000
    Breno Giacomini RT - Dead Money - $625,000 Savings - $4,500,000
    Ryan Fitzpatrick QB - Dead Money - $5,000,000 Savings - $0
    Erin Henderson ILB - Dead Money - $0 - Savings $2,750,000

    Total Dead Money - $12,125,000
    Total Savings - $35,658,333

Jets Free Agents to Target / Retain / Camp Fodder
    Ben Ijalana OT
    Brian Winters OG
    Tanner Purdum LS
    Antonio Allen S
    Brian Bostick TE (RFA)
    Wesley Johnson C
    Marcus Williams CB

    Free Agent Targets
    Ryan Mallett QB
    John Kuhn FB
    Jacob Tamme TE
    Jermaine Gresham TE
    Larry Warford RG
    Stefan Wisniewski OC
    Eric Berry S
    Prince Amukamara CB
    Melvin Ingram OLB

We should also be able to add veterans at RT and LT but I am not sure who I would want at this point. We may need to trade one of our surplus 3-4 DEs to fill one of those spots with a capable veteran or high draft pick.

Hasty, a couple things that are hard to get past and this is just my opinion:

-Cleveland appears to be in the business of acquiring picks not trading up, so I don't think that trade is realistic
-I think it would take more than a 4th to get Tony Romo and I don't want him anyway

Nobody is going to trade up for a top 5 pick unless it's a QB. Once again no franchise QB will be available this year

Mangold is one of my favorite players on the team but we need to rebuild the line with young players that don't make $9 mil per year.

Teams trade up and down all the time.

I think you're a little interior line happy on this one at least in terms of free agency/draft matchups. I like all the selections but if we're signing Wisniewski, and Warford, do we need to resign Winters & draft Procic? That's before even considering James Carpenter as the starting left guard.

I'd take an ILB in place of one of those corners, and cut Harris as well.

I agree as I've got this move in my offseason mock (once the season ends) as well.

We all know that Mangold is by far a better player than Wesley Johnson. But is Nick Mangold (turning 33 in 1/2017) better value at $8.5 million than Wesley Johnson is at 700k (turning 26 in 1/2017)??? Especially for the time being.

Pocic is an interesting prospect in this draft. I think he will be a good guard, but I think he has potential to play tackle in the NFL. I believe that he has the size and foot speed to make the transition to tackle in the NFL.

I'm not a fan of moving a guy out. Tackles can move in, but guards/centers rarely translate to moving out. It's usually because they can't operate in an isolation situation in space.

He does seem to be an interesting prospect though, being a bit tall at center, which makes me question his ability to play with leverage. The best NFL centers usually top out at 6'4", and are usually battling 6'3"-6'5" bowling balls at defensive tackle and nose tackle.

For that reason he likely projects better to guard, but I wouldn't bank on him as a tackle unless his team is in a pinch.

I could be wrong of course as I'm not incredibly familiar with him as a prospect and am not completely sure of his athleticism/strength combination. I do know he blocked for Fournette and anyone who does that is good in my book.

    Travis Frederick - 6'3"
    Ryan Kalil - 6'2"
    Mike Pouncey - 6'5"
    Maurkice Pouncey - 6'4"
    Alex Mack - 6'4"
    Nick Mangold - 6'4"
    David Andrews - 6'3"
    Jason Kelce - 6'3"
    Spencer Long - 6'3"
    Jeremy Zuttah - 6'3"
    Max Unger - 6'5"
    John Sullivan - 6'4"

Seriously, trade down and remain inept for another 30 years? Only a Jets fan could come up with that.

We can dump Dozier leaving Winters to back up both guard positions. Wisniewski will cost next to nothing and can give Pocic time to develop.

I would rather have depth and competition on the OL than leave holes. If we end up weak at one or both tackle positions, that push up the middle will make a huge difference.

The reason I think he can move out to tackle is that this year he was projected to be LSU's starting LT going into the season. He ended up staying at center because he missed all of the offseason because of hip surgery. He might not be able to make the transition to tackle, but I think a team will give him the opportunity during mini camp.

I see. This I did not know. It's still a tough transition, but he certainly has the size to do it. Like I said, the worry is if he has the athleticism/strength combination meshed with the footwork. The footwork for tackles is drastically different than that of a center.

When your team blows through the nostrils on Redlight TV, it's never too early to mock.

I am shocked no one is harping about the DE/OLB in the first round. It would be freaking anarchy around here if we drafted another d-lineman in the first.

The last real threat we had on the outside was John Abraham.

I agree, I just see Warford as being a big money signing to the tune of a similar contract Carpenter got. I think that marks the end of Winters time here.

I believe Warford is a good player, but I'm not too sure about his strengths and weaknesses. If he's more known as a pass blocker I'd pass, since that's Carpenter's strength. (https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-ranking-all-32-nfl-offensive-lines-entering-week-11/ notes him as a disappointment)

He's likely in the top 4 best guards on the market with Chance Warmack, Ron Leary and Kevin Zeitler. If we're signing a guard we need to get the best run blocker of the bunch.

Anyone have access to PFF's guard rankings? I'd like to go get Riley Reiff at tackle more than a guard. He might demand huge money though as he's really the only youthful tackle worth a damn that's available.
