Why would that be a worry? The best run franchises admit their mistakes and cut their dead weight mistakes right away. Second round pick sucks in his second year? Cut him. No need to take up a roster spot over someone deserving. I wholeheartedly feel the same way about Fitzpatrick. Any regime with half a set of balls would have cut him after his press conference when he called out the entire franchise including his billionaire owner. Imagine calling out Daniel Snyder or Jerry Jones like that? Pfft.

Damn, yeah i just heard about Clady last night. That's a shame. Admittedly, Clady wasn't having a great year, but Mangold on the other hand was before the injury. I'd be nervous to have Petty in there without Mangold. I just don't see the big deal with rushing him out there.

As fans, sure, we'd like to see Petty because we haven't seen him yet aside from some preseason action, but the coaches see him everyday in practice and understand his familiarity with the system and chemistry with WRs, so I think they know a little better than we do about when to start him. If Fitz can't play, there is no choice, but the Colts game IS the IDEAL game to start an untested young QB. There's no way around that. The Rams aren't a good team, but they have a decent defense.

Do you really think 2 games is going to mean the world over evaluating the kid? Most QBs take 2 years + before we can evaluate where they are at. It's not a plug and play position. I think people are just being impatient.

Wesley Johnson is not a liability. Pressure coming from the face won't kill you. Pressure from the edges will put you out with a shoulder injury for weeks. I.e. see Brandon Shell's turnstile impression in pre season.

    From the horses' mouth:

"Jets coach Todd Bowles bristled with repeated questions about why he has remained steadfastly committed to Ryan Fitzpatrick. "For me to make a quarterback change, I'd have to have a quarterback controversy," he said. "Ryan is the starter, Bryce (Petty) is the backup." Bowles said Fitzpatrick (sprained knee) is making progress in practice, but he stopped short of saying he will start Sunday. From all indications, he will."

If we're lucky, someone from the Rams will do a "Mo Lewis" and help this franchise move on from FitzTragic..... Please...Someone Help Us!!

    Its gotta be the contract...

I dont wish harm on anybody, but when that Ram does a Mo Lewis to Fitz can it be on the sideline and right against Bowles legs?

I fucking hate Ryan Fitzpatrick. He's made me feel apathetic towards one of my biggest passions. I have no emotion whatsoever while watching Jets game right now. Even when we were bad in 2012 and 2014 I at least cared.

So a large majority of your fan base begging for a QB change just to make the game interesting isn't a controversy? Every radio pundit in the tri-state calling for a QB change isn't a controversy? Our QB leading the league in interceptions isn't a cause for controversy? Our QB only throwing 2 touchdowns in the 2nd half of the season isn't a cause for a controversy? Todd Bowles need to freaking go. What a horrible head coach. He lacks the conviction to make a switch.

I feel bad for you guys with limited Sunday options. At least until it gets super cold, I can make it to Belmar and go fishing.

I'm starting to think a lot of Bowles' intransigence regarding the Qb position is due to his pride. He's struggling so hard to be the HC that he's afraid to make any changes until he has very little other choice to do so. That's why he "bristles" everytime the media asks him a question that appears to challenge his judgement. His team is playing badly but he refuses to admit the obvious that the 2016 season essentially is over. He's hanging on to the old "we're not out of it until we're out of it" even though his Qb is the worst in the league, his offense is outdated and the supposed strength of the team is woefully underperfoming.

Now the worst thing a HC in the tri-state can do, Bowles is doing by staying the course on the Titanic.

Hey Todd, that big thing in the distance is an Iceberg, not the playoffs.

I can't turn off a Jets game because I almost feel obligated to watch them. But it's getting close to the point where I just watch red zone and get updates from there. The team isn't going anywhere this year and refuses to play for the future either; what is the point of these games right now? Nothing is getting accomplished.

Side note: the Rams are our mirror image. I saw a Jeff Fisher press conference about why Keenum is starting over Goff and he gave all of the exact same lines as Bowles in the exact same tone. Keenum's interviews are identical to Fitzpatrick's. Seriously look them up, it's scary.

Bowles 3 weeks ago: "Ryan is fine"

    Fisher today: "Case is fine"

It's surreal how many parallels there are between us. Mediocre roster that's going nowhere this year but has a great defensive line. Refusal to bench terrible veteran QBs and play for the future.

Bowles lacks the conviction to do anything as a HC. He doesn't have the balls to go for it on the other side of the 50 if they are within a yard. If you can't gain a yard you don't deserve to win the game, it's just that simple. We're seeing his lack of balls right now with the QB position. He is too damn stubborn to make a switch. He doesn't want to admit he is wrong. I fail to see how bad Sixpatrick has to be to get benched! I decided to do a little more research into Fitz's stats and they are as bad as advertised.

Fitz is 32nd in the NFL in completion percentage.
Fitz is 32nd in the NFL in QB rating.
Fitz is 1st in the NFL in INTs.
Fitz is 26th in the NFL in yards per attempt.
Fitz has 2 touchdowns to 12 INTs in the 2nd half of games this season.
He's thrown 7 redzone INTs this year.

Besides those stats Fitz blatantly stares down his first read, constantly steps up into the pressure. He got strip sacked twice last week vs Miami. He threw an INT to a spot on the field where there was no receiver within 10 yards. He can't throw an out route. He can't throw a screen. He has no passion on the field. What the hell does a guy have to do to get off the field? This team is a joke.

Yeah that's the problem. We're shooting ourselves in the foot by not evaluating the younger quarterbacks on the roster. We can't start Petty the last two games of the year and try to be honest with ourselves in that being a fair evaluation period. The worst thing this franchise can do, is not give themselves enough time to realize whether or not Petty can be at least a viable option moving forward. And I fear that's going to happen.

This would be the perfect week to give him the nod. We do not want to send him into a game vs. New England, who obviously want home field advantage and usually embarrass young quarterbacks.

The difference, to me, is that Goff wasn't a true #1 overall pick kind of like when Alex Smith was #1. He came with a lot of questions and his readiness to play immediately was also a draft issue. I think the Rams panicked seeing how poorly Foles played last year. That Goff isn't playing despite where drafted isn't surprising to me given all the questions about him entering the draft. I don't follow the Rams but I'd say this has the makings of a GM vs head coach issue. The GM panicked after a bad deal getting Foles which at the time he thought was a steal and tried to show how smart he is while Fisher (despite being over rated as a coach) saw his flaws and decided he needs to sit and learn. If this was year 2 for Goff like it is for Petty and the starter was shitting the bed like Fitz is then yes, he's been in the system long enough its time to see what Goff has but right now I'd be fine letting him sit and learn.

I'd definitely prefer Mangold be in there when Petty starts, and would have loved to have Clady too, but it is what it is.

With a veteran CS who has experience in handling young QBs, I'd agree with you that the CS knows better than we do about when to start Petty. With this clueless bunch who has stuck with Fitz for far too long, then all bets are off. Bowles seems blind and stubborn in his refusal or inability to see how bad Fitz is. Gailey's not much better.

While 2 games may not mean the world, having 7 games to evaluate Petty is better than 5 and gives him two more games of experience. No one is claiming that it's a plug and play position. If we're being impatient, it has more to do with how bad Fitz is, how bad the team is, and we want and need something to root for, to hopefully feel positive about, and give us some hope for next season.

I think Bowles is making a big mistake here.

If he wins a few more games with the old vets, at the end of the year the book on him is the same as it is today. He had alot of talent on that team, but couldn't weather through a tough early schedule due to a combination of lack of fortitude, poor execution by the players and BAD coaching by Bowles and the rest of the coaching staff. That falls primarily on the HC.

But what if he turns the team over to the young guys, and they are able to grow and rally and close the season with a few wins? Then the book on the Jets is they had alot of talent ON PAPER, but the veteran players like Fitz, Marshall and Revis let the team down. They couldnt execute and didnt respond to the coaching staff like they should have. The blame shifts to the Vets. But its a brighter day tomorrow and Bowles and Chan should stay because it would be bad for the young players to switch coaches and install a new offense and defense.

But of course that means that Bowles actually has a system, and put these guys in the position to win and coached them right. We'll see soon enough.

He needs to relax and just do what is best for the team. Its like he is so worried about perceived instability/a big QB controversy, he's willing to stick with a bum, just to show he's a stable coach or something. Just let it rip. Don't overthink things and let damn the kid(s) play. Idk where his balls went.

Don't want Petty playing without Mangold? Mangold hasn't been all that great this year and two weeks ago Jets were pretty effective with the run game without him...you don't see other teams making excuses missing a player. Petty should start regardless who is at the line. Do I Wish Mangold was playing? Sure but backups have their jobs to do.
