The policy that has been in place for a couple of years calls for a 1 game suspension for the first DUI. The only thing in question is when it is given, most likely it will be to start next season. Bills RB Jonathan Williams got a DUI a few months before the season started and he has not been suspended yet.

Whether or not he plays is another story.

He has 0 guaranteed dollars on his contract. There's literally not a single risk taken here.

His problems in Tampa were more than just the DUI(s). He didn't bother to learn the offense. Now he'll be asked to learn a different offense on the fly. I'm skeptical.

I don't think he'll have much, if any, impact here at all but we'll see. I thought he was a real talent in college.

I'm sure the only thing going for this guy right now is the hope that getting cut is a massive wake up call to a guy who doesn't seem mature enough to play in this league. We'll see whether this inspires or him or if he continues to remain ignorant of the gifts he is squandering getting to play in the NFL.

This move would be so much better if our QB could actually throw the ball on a consistent basis. The fact remains we don't lack targets as much as we lack a QB that can throw the long ball with authority or quick fire short or medium passes into tight spaces.

So this means we have to pick up the 2M left on his contract that no other team in the NFL was willing to do, why were we or is this just Macaghan continuing his policy of wasting as much money as he can?

waste of money on this guy. He didn't learn the playbook, he argued with his coaches, was checked out of games, oft injured and his stats aren't much better than Amaro's were...

How did not one, but two of you, back to back, miss the FACT that he has 0 guaranteed dollars remaining on his contract? It's been brought up multiple times.

According to the following Star Ledger article, the Jets thoroughly vetted ASJ.: http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/why_jets_felt_comfortable_acquiring_austin_seferia.html

Following is the meat of the article:

With Erin Henderson, Brandon Marshall, Forte and other vets, the Jets must think they can help ASJ turn his life and career around. I see this as more of a long-term move than a short-term move. The kid has great size and a ton of talent. He's a good blocker. Considering that he will probably be suspended by the NFL for at least a game or two and has to learn the offense, I imagine it may be around game 7 or 8 before he makes even a cameo appearance, but guess it could happen sooner. It will depend upon how hard he works and how much help he gets learning the offense. If the Jets feel any sense of urgency about getting him on the field, then I imagine that he'd get at least some help, but with tough games coming up, I don't see how they'd be able to give him much help. If he works hard, keeps his nose clean the rest of the season, and flashes his talent, the Jets will probably keep him next season. If he dogs it learning the offense, in practice, or in games, or gets into trouble again, they can cut him before next season. It's definitely a risky move, but aside from being a distraction, not a big risk imo, but could have huge rewards if he gets help with his drinking problem and approaches his potential. He has the talent he could be one of, if not the best TE in franchise history.

Don't like this pick up one bit. We have enough receivers as it is, I don't think it's smart to somehow crowbar a TE into your scheme and try to get him the ball and whatnot, midseason, when the TE position has been something you totally ignored the past couple years. And all that for what, a bum who couldn't get the job done in Tampa competing against some of the worst TEs in football? And then he's shitting on his coaches and teammates, having off field issues and all that. Who is this idiot? This is a typical Rex move. Like I said, don't like it, even if it works out and he does somewhat OK for a while. He's gonna fuck up sooner or later and he will get himself fired again. He's not worth the headaches. Gronk is. Not this bum.

Tampa is a completely dysfunctional franchise I'm willing to give a player a pass for any bullshit that went on down there. ASJ is one of the best TE prospects of the last few years, this is absolutely a great zero risk move.

He's had multiple DUI arrests the past couple years. Before he got to the NFL and with the Buccs obviously, so he's got some serious issues that he's not just going to figure out over the weekend, that aren't Tampa related. It's definitely not a zero risk move. Stuff like that, a locker room cancer, can really affect your season in a big way (negatively). I guess we'll have to wait and see.

When he came into the draft I thought he was going to be the next great TE in this league. He had everything. A basketball player WITH college football production. Huge and fast with really big hands.

With this pickup I was concerned that he had bigger problems than just drinking. on the field stuff like not bothering to learn the plays. Like you said though Tampa was a cesspool. Imagine getting drafted and being excited to be in the NFL and the team you go to your rookie year wants to lose games on purpose like Tampa was doing in 2014. That would deflate anyone's enthusiasm to learn plays and produce.

Hopefully all the guy needs is a change. We'll see.The tight end position is notorious for that "year 3 jump" in that it takes a player 3 years to figure it out

he has no guaranteed money If it isn't working out you just cut him. But if it does work out you have the next Jimmy Graham.

Appreciate the concern but it is a risk worth taking. One thing we do have is a solid set of dedicated leaders in the locker room that will not put up with his shit, but can actually help him get his head on straight. Unlike Tampa which is unfortunately undergoing some rudderless, dysfunctional times. I would also like to point out that the so called wasted money by Mac is utter BS. If its one thing he does better than most is leverage bargains, so please get off that kick. Not one dime is for sure or guaranteed.
May I point out that if NE would have made a similar move, most naysayers would be lining up front and center to kiss BB God like ass.
We needed to try something, and we did. Kudos to Mac for taking action. I wish I could say the same for our CS Sunday that could not adjust on the fly worth a shit, trying the same BS play in the red zone at nausea, only to fail, over, and over and over again. Fitz is who we should fret over.
Mac is the least of our worries...in him I trust.

As long as he's on the roster, they have to pay him.
