Winters showed improvement last year. It was obvious he was shaky his first year, he did get thrown to fire tho. He reminded me of Slauson. Slauson made some mistakes when he first started and fans never got those images out of their heads. People were complaining after a while about shit that didn't exist. Is Winters a blue chipper? No. But you have to give these guys a chance develop, learn, and become a unit. All along you could see Winters had some excellent attributes and needed to fix a few things Qvale made that brutal penalty at first, but they all played well. Johnson was scary in the pre-season at Center with his long snaps, but he was competing like an animal last night. They all were.
I have been probably the biggest Brian Winters critic on TGG. I am more than happy to admit he has player very very well. I'm just confused how the guy's play could be night & day within the span of a season. Did we get a new O-line coach? And I prefer Ilajana to Qvale. I don't think Brent is there yet. I think the only reason we held on to Breno G is because of Clady's injury history.
Sounds like Carpenter isn't too bad. Calves are tricky nonetheless, but it's good news. Jets' James Carpenter has 'mild strain' of calf, not expected to miss time, per source http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/jets_james_carpenter_has_mild_strain_of_calf_per_s.html
Please allow me to sincerely commend you highly for being such a true, stand-up Jets fan which, IMO, places you in the minority. On the surface, your remarks about Winters wouldn't appear to be that big a deal to most. Having been a fan for 50+ years, I've endured my fair share of disappointment, pain and anguish but for me, one of the most dispiriting aspects of being a Jets fan are the arrogant attitudes and immature behavior exhibited by an excessively large percentage of our own fickle fan base. Far too many of us are cringe-worthy "know-it-alls" who perceive themselves and their weakly formed opinions beyond question or reproach. Way too many are also afflicted with CLS (Chicken Little Syndrome) with their dire pronouncements that the season is over or player "X" sucks from here to eternity after a loss or less than elite quality performance. On countless occasions, I have been guilty of all of the above after having had my guts ripped out and my eyes clouded by the red mist of rage as a consequence of suffering through our past horrific losses (several of which I never fully recovered from). I wonder how many of last week's posters from the negative threads denouncing "Fitz is Ass" and/or "Resigning Fitz was a Major Mistake" stepped up this week with either complimentary remarks as to his excellent performance last night if not amended their points of view slightly with any ensuing posts. How many Fitzshitters will admit to taking at least a tiny bite of crow after his game last night?
Last season, right about the time I started coming around on him, he turned into Shitz. I'm not giving ground until he's holding a trophy in the air. I don't walk under ladders, either.
I believe he showed improvement last year, and graded out as so. But don't have any link to that grade tho, particularly penalty wise. The mistakes may have been glaring because they were familiar, but there was less of them. He's a good run blocker and down field blocker. The line overall did well. Here are the Coaches, and it may be time to acknowledge the job they're doing: STEVE MARSHALL DAVID DIAZ-INFANTE
They seem to have switched to more of a zone blocking scheme both running & in pass pro. Either teams haven't had enough exposure to the change to properly find weaknesses or these guys are simply playing lights out.Hoping Carpenter is ok. I had lost hope in Winters this preseason.Totally shocked.
Who is the o line coach? Big props to him...these guys seem fundamentally sound. Whoever he is he may be moving up the ladder soon.
Fans may forget that winter played T in college and moved to guard following the draft - takes time to make that transition for many. Two major things changed for him this off season in addition to him putting in huge work - he is on the right side not the left and the zone blocking scheme has been implemented. Johnson was better at center than Dozier and gives more flexibility covering both C/G better @ RT the snap count was exactly even between Ijalana & Qvale
I am not a major Fitz fan and felt he left plays on the pitch last week - the game could have been VERY different if the Bills recovered his fumble on the first drive (Davis was the lone Jet among 4 Bills fighting for the ball) and he also missed seeing a wide open Forte in the endzone for an easy TD on one of the opening drives where we settled for FGs - HOWEVER he hit his guys all over the place and the protection he got allowed him look more like Dan Marino - he hit almost all his long throws for a change - now like both sides of the Fitz discussion want - lets see this weeks Fitz continue and we could .......
glad winters is probably proving me right when i said he was going to be a very good player. also we shouldnt overlook fortes impact. extremely disciplined in all facets. always hits the right hole, blocks well and is a quick outlet for a pass against a rush. great fit.
It's amazing how much progress Winters made. He looked like the worst guard in football as a rookie (which was sort of expected) and by the end of last season he had developed into a rock solid starter creating big holes, hustling downfield and taking out safeties, being consistent in pass protection as well. At this point I'm not sure I want Breno back. He was the weak link the past 2 years and right now we're playing well. So keep him out until the guys at RT can't get the job done.
Now we just need to sign Clady and Mangold's eventual replacements. Provided they aren't hiding on the roster already. I nominate Forrest Lamp from WKU.
It helps that both our backs are real solid in blitz pickup but the offensive line has been a pleasant surprise to start the year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeah, getting more athletic at RT may be the move, and it may be happening already with Ijalana or Qvale. Other than that Qvale penalty they did well. Of course there's a long way to go yet Btw, I don't think Winters committed hardly any penalties last year, if at all. I'd like to know for sure. Also, don't forget, I believe we gave up the second fewest sacks last year and were like 10th in rushing.
I'm more than plesently surprised. The more I see Mac moves in action the more I respect his insight. We have a DL that is a beast and with a little more youth infusion we could do the same to the O line. We are moving in the right direction folks. We are getting a young, talented team in the making. When our rookie QB takes the reins next year we are going to be a force. Call me crazy, but contrary to popular opinion, I would not be a bit surprised if we go CB, OL, RB, LB, OL next year.
