Their are four reasons for today's incredibly frustrating loss:

    1. Folk - he left 4 points on the field. Nothing more to say.

    2. Revis and the secondary- the d-line dominated but software coverage and blown assignments let an offense that couldn't run or pass protect put up 23 points. Revis can't be trusted in single coverage. Green smoked him today. He needs safety help on top receivers and may be one of the most overpaid players in the NFL.

    3. Fitz - He is below average. Period. He threw five passes in the end zone inside Athe five yard line and every one should have been an easy TD, but he missed badly on all 5. Folk missed one FG. That's 10 points left on the field. He also cannot lead a winning drive with under 2 minutes with that pop gun arm.

4 Play calling. Way too conservative when it counted on both sides of the ball. The Jets needed a TD on that next to last drive, but Gailey pulled a Herm and ran on 3rd and 5 from the 15. Did the Jets throw a pass over 15 yards today? How many passes were attempted on first down? Now the defense. Up 16-10 with four minutes left of n the half and the Bengals starting from their 10 yard line, the Jets had a chance to put the game away. Hold the Bengals, get the ball back with good field position, score 3 or 7 to end the half while starting the 2nd half with the ball. Good teams bracket half time with scores. Instead, the Jets play soft as Charmin and not only let the Bengals out of the hole, but let them score. The defense on the last drive was awful too. Good defenses come up with stops at the end of the half and game.

Was your post necessary? I've been a member since 2000 . This board used to be a great place to discuss the Jets and football. Lately it is just filled with obnoxious argumentative posts and insults by a bunch of assholes. Thanks for the tremendous insight. Your football knowledge is incredible. I thought things would get better once the games started. I guess I was wrong. It must be fun beng an anonymous internet bully. Congratulations.

i think we shot ourselves in the foot today, but lost by 1 to a super bowl contender. there are no moral victories in the NFL, but i still think we have a lot to build on for the upcoming weeks and should be a good team throughout the entire season.

the season is 16 games long. losing the first game doesn't mean the sky is falling for me

It was just a typical Jets loss. Finding all sorts of ways to lose. Sure, Cincinnati is a good team but goddammit, these are games you have to win to be succesful. This one could come back to haunt us.

I think that that is the real point - reasonably good teams might get in these kinds of games, but by definition successful teams win them, and that is something the Jets just seem unable to do.

Just rewatched the game. A few comments ...

1- we have a VERY good football team, and people who can't see that are clueless. We're going to win a lot of games this year.

2- people who think Fitz was the problem today are crazy. Your point #3 is off base. Those "5 easy TD passes" from inside the 5 yard line only exist in your imagination. Maybe 2 bad passes at most. You need to watch the game again. Anyway ... The offense put up 22 points, and in essence it should have been 26 points if the kicking team could do their goddamn job. If the offense was a problem today, it's WAY down the list.

3- Fitz missed scrambling for a TD by 1 foot. We ended up kicking a FG to make it 20-19. On the next possession BP missed picking up the game ending first down by 1 foot. We kicked again to make it 22-20. Those 24" cost us the game. That's the way it goes sometimes.

4- even then, we still had them at 3rd and 13 from the 40 with 1:00 left. Too far for a winning FG. Then Revis gets beat by AJ for 12 yards to the 28. FG ... 23-20. Game over.

I'm pretty much with you on the other 3 points. This game was lost by the kicking team and the secondary ... And maybe some conservative calls from the staff.

All that said ...Going into the game I thought we had one of the best teams in the league. I feel exactly the same way now. We have better talent than Buffalo. I expect to go in there with a fresh Sheldon Richardson on Thursday night, make a few adjustments, and knock the snot out of them.

Fitz sucks. I didn't want him back. I'd rather start Geno, and if it means we lose by 40, so be it. At least we'll have a QB who can throw the ball more than 15 yards, and maybe won't play so conservatively, and if worse comes to worse, we'll be in great position in the draft. All Fitz is going to lead to is mediocrity.

The hell we are. Fitz was missing open receivers all day. He has a rag arm. If/when we get behind late, he gives us zero chance at a comeback.

Yes, we have a lot of talent and a very good football team, but we are severely flawed in a couple of areas. Hopefully, Bowles will figure out ways to cover for those flaws, the blown assignments will stop, and he'll make some changes to his philosophy and approach. If Folk doesn't get his act together, we're going to lose a lot of games because of him.

    - Nick Folk

    - mistakes by the secondary

It's that simple. Sure you can point to Fitz and blah blah blah, or to being conservative. The fact is this game SHOULD have concluded with a 13-26 Jets win and the Bengals being fortunate to get the 13 due to the elite play of a very good WR in Green.

I expected the offense to look similar to this, trying to get a sense of game flow and balance between pass and run. Looked decent with big positives (Forte) and plenty to grow on. I agree with the no moral victories in the NFL, however just based on talent evaluation and the eye test the Jets dominated this game but ultimately lost it due to mental errors. I expect Bowles to regroup and look good come Thursday.

SMH, the playcalling was fine. The problem was the execution.

I'm curious, does anyone NOT criticize the playcalling after a loss?

So you would rather lose by 40 than by 1? Say Fitz threw a 30 yard bomb today, Brandon Marshall couldn't have held on to it.

That's an big overstatement. Yes, he had a few bad throws for sure ... Just like EVERY QB did today. A few incompletions were batted down by the Bengals DLine, and they also hit him on a few throws. His overall play was not a problem, and I didn't see all these "wide open" receivers running free all day. Like I said ... I just watched the game again and it's just not the case.

As far as him having NO CHANCE to bring us back ... Too harsh.
Did you not see the Giants game last season? How about putting up 10 clutch points in the 4th Q to beat Dallas? And that OT win against the Pats last season ... That wasn't clutch play by him??

For Christ's Sake ... He brought us back in THIS game.
He was supposed to bring us back AGAIN in the last 50 seconds, with no timeouts, when the Bengals know we are forced to pass on EVERY down? Well, maybe he would have ... If Brandon Marshall catches a perfect pass on first down for 25 yards.

I'd never call him a great QB, and he's not our future. But he did have a great season last year, so why would you NOT want him back? There's no reason to think we can't win with him this year.

You want to know why we lost? The simple explanation is this team is full of players who when the game is on the line, the crap the bed...... We had the lead, all we needed was a stop....... And our D ONCE AGAIN proves how overrated they are! I'm actually surprised that people didn't expect this! It's what we do!

Could not agree with you more. I also basically made the same comments on an other thread. Items 1 &4 might be correctable, but 2-3 will be our down fall.

Folk and the rest of the secondary can obviously do better. But I don't know about Revis and Fitzpatrick. It's obvious Revis is no longer the shut down corner he used to be. Guys are jamming him and the larger receivers can shrug him off down field. But Fitz worries me the most. He's not going to play above the competition. We can't count on him to deliver a knockout blow or a air it out. Sometimes today he looked down right confused and flustered.

Generally good stuff. When an offense does not go for touchdowns in close it does not fall on a coordinator. The defense first philosophy comes from the head coach. Offense wins in the NFL. Settling for 3 is a sure way to lose at the end. Fitz is who he is. Smart but average. It's obvious that they don't trust him to make a play. Green is a great receiver and Dalton made some tight throws but Revis could use some help regardless of how much money he makes.
