The Jets are keeping four QB's on a 53 man roster, it's a shame Hackenberg is taking up one of those spots, a shame Geno is too. Geno is done, the fans won't give him any chance so just cut the guy already.

So while Hackenberg is a "project" and judging by his last performance "project" is putting it lightly. He is terrible as of right now and taking up a roster spot that can be filled with someone who can actually contribute this decade.

Between the four middling to scrub QB's and four scrub TE's on the roster I am really wondering if Maccagnan has any clue what he's doing.

This is the argument that I can not understand. How many bottom of the roster players actually contribute? Maybe they make 1 tackle through out the season on special teams when the game is out of reach?
And of those players, how many actually have a chance to become more than a fill in on specials?
Not trying to downplay the role of those special team players but if there is even an outside shot that Hack can become even just a decent QB then it is worth it to use that 53rd roster spot on him for 1 season.

I truly believe Hackenberg is mentally ready to play, the physicals need to be worked out with repetitions in practice on the sideline and especially against a defense so you can see why he reverts back to old habits and such. Petty is the opposite, needs to still work on the mental side in terms of reading defenses and calling the plays. Another offseason of studying the game will do him great justice.

I hope Petty and Hack can somehow help one another. Then they can compete for the job.

What I see is that Hackenberg doesn't own the pocket when he's in it. He's renting he pocket out from the slide. When they come in there he starts tiptoeing around, not stepping up instead of being aware, moving around, making space and stepping into his throws. He did it in the first drive the other week and he looked great then he just stopped.

That's because the pressure was starting to get to him and he was losing confidence in the receivers due to the lack of reps he received. He reverted back to Jr Yr Hack. Him standing on the side with no defense throwing a football practicing working on mechanics is not the way to get him on the right path. He needs to see the defense, it's the closest way to simulating a real game environment.

No qb would've benefited more from those reps then Hack IMO during training camp.

Hopefully we will never see Geno Hackenberg in a game that counts. He's awful.

Let's look at it in perspective. Most of the prognosticators agreed that it wasn't the best QB class. Yet, two were taken in the top two slots and neither one had a good preseason. The one the Jets passed on, Lynch, had a decent preseason yet he couldn't beat out a 7th pick from last year. The one guy who lit it up, Prescott, was a 4th round pick. Connor Cook also considered a possible top draft pick didn't do so great either. Hackenberg looked pretty good in his first game, and that's a positive. Didn't look so great in the second game but at least he got a lot of snaps to learn from. Bottom line: with the exception of the exception (Prescott), Hackenberg's performance was on par with the top picks of his class and that's hopeful.

At somepoint during the end of the Rex tenure the Jets were running with less than a full roster, if I remember correctly. They managed then and they'll manage with 52 this season.

4 QB's also means less snaps for Petty and Hack, both of whom would benefit from more snaps. I understand hanging onto 4 while they see how Petty heals, but I really hope this isn't a long term thing.

There's going to be a lot of movement at the bottom of the roster as guys return from suspension/PUP/injury. Hopefully we trim down to 3 QB's by week 6.

The issue is in a weak QB draft you don't draft a project in the 2nd round yet they did, you do that in the 4th round. I'd have no issue with a guy like Hack being drafted later on like they did with Petty but you need an immediate impact contributor with your 1st 2nd and 3rd round picks.

My God. If you combine the brains and arm of Geno with that of Hackenberg... You may have the Pillsbury Throwboy.

I disagree. There are no "shoulds" or guidelines for when one takes a project player. You have to take them where you have them ranked and where you think other teams have them ranked. I guarantee you that if the Jets hadn't taken Hack in the 2nd round that NE, Houston or another team would have in either the 2nd or 3rd round.

Traditionally, no one wouldn't take a QB project that high, but this is today's NFL, not the NFL of the '80s. This is a passing league and there is a real dearth of quality QBs. When you have a team like the Jets who haven't had a franchise-type QB in forever, one has to be creative, and go outside the traditional ways and modes of thinking and acting. Hack isn't a spread offense QB who has to learn how to take snaps from under center, call plays in the huddle, read Ds and go through his progressions. He was doing all of that at 18 years of age. Mechanics are the thing most easily corrected, relatively speaking.

Petty wasn't a sure thing. If Mac wants to remain a GM in the NFL for long, he has to find a QB. Taking Hack in the 2nd round is cheaper and a better way than giving up a massive number of picks to move up in the draft. I applaud the move 100% and will even should it not work out.

Interesting prediction..... and I agree that 3 QBs would be more ideal, but how would you manage your prediction? do you think they'd cut someone mid season? and if that person isn't Geno Smith i don't see how they wouldn't lose him - unless you think that person will be geno smith?

That's probably because he was never able to do that his last two years at PSU and was only able to do it with the Jets on his first drive. In order for a QB to be able to do that, he has to have a quality OL in front of him that he trusts and who can actually form and keep a pocket.

Probably not. You probably ought to find another team to root for.

assuming they're all healthy I would lose Geno. He's gone next year anyway and the more weeks go by the less value he has.

Its a short term sacrifice that's for sure. A 2nd round Right Tackle would be really nice right now and would firmly have the starting job for example.

It took some balls to take Hackenberg, knowing a safe starter at another position could've probably been had. I was reading a scouting report and they quoted an anonymous GM who said something like "Hackenberg is the type of draft pick that could make some GM a lot of money or the pick could get them fired." the guy is a lightning rod and where he was drafted will always be floating around
