Bowles, Harris and others have said that while the skill level of the "newbies" is high there will be issues due to their inexperience especially with play recognition - early on they will have to be careful not to over commit resulting in yielding big gains on misdirection plays

When the team went to a dime package, Dexter McDougle went outside, and Dee in. With Kellen Davis out, it looks like that will continue throughout the offseason. Jets punter Lac Edwards certainly has a cannon for a leg, there’s no denying that. The dude can boom the ball. Tom Hackett, on the other hand, is a directional kicker. They are two polar opposite kickers. Media finally got a chance to see the two Wednesday and both showed exactly that: Edwards has power, Hackett has accuracy. They both, though, shanked a couple. Erin Henderson continues to fly around the ball. He had a near sack on Geno Smith shooting up the middle. David Harris also had a would-be sack, while Darron Lee showed great speed to dart into the backfield for a tackle for a loss. Safety Rontez Miles got a lot of first-team reps with Calvin Pryor absent for personal reasons. Miles had a near interception of Smith, but went left instead of right. Christian Hackenberg made this really neat — but also weird– throw during team drills. Facing pressure, Hackenberg contorted his arm in a way to get the ball just around the incoming defender and into the gut of Dominique Williams. That pass drew some praise from defenders and offensive players as many thought it was a sure-fire sack before Hackenberg got it away. Geno Smith threw three-straight touchdowns at one point during team drills. The first went to Kenbrell Thompkins on a post route. Dexter McDougle had a beautiful pass defense on a ball thrown up for Brandon Marshall in the end zone. He went up and smacked it down, then celebrated quite a bit after. tis the season for optimism. it's great to hear about the young guys doing well but I hope it doesn't lead to unrealistic expectations for them come September.
Great news on Milliner, McDougle and Dozier. If we can get solid contributions out of those 3, it will be great. I'm going to be really curious to see which punter the Jets choose. Edwards has power, while Hackett has accuracy and is a directional kicker. Accuracy and being able to kick away from returners can make up for lack of power. Power is great if one can control it so that one can down the ball inside the 20. There's also nothing like it when one has to punt from one's own end zone or deep in one's own territory. A 50 or 60 yard punt in those situations is HUGE. There are positives to both. I'm going to enjoy hearing reports from mini-camp and TC, then hopefully, getting to see each in preseason action.
You're certainly correct in general. I'm not sure to whom you are referring however. I think this is the 3rd year for Milliner, McDougle and Dozier. I don't really consider them "young guys" even though they're 24 or so. They've been around long enough and had time to develop, even though Milliner and McDougle have had injuries which has limited their practice time. So if they're on the team at the end of TC, I expect each of those 3 to make solid contributions, and I don't think that's unreasonable. If you were referring to the rookies, then yeah, we'll take what we can get.
Edwards might also be able to do kickoffs, which would be nice. Either way it should be better than Quigley at least.
Great point about Edwards and kickoffs. That would be great. The punting definitely has to be better than Quigley.

If Edwards makes it and can KO, you may cut Folk for $ because the Martin the Duke kicker struggles on kick offs
This happens even with the great NFL linebackers that have a game based on speed. Luke Kuechly is actually a big victim of this despite his elite All-Pro play. I'm remembering a prime time game where the Panthers gave up a huge run because he didn't maintain his gap responsibility and overran the play resulting in a 50+ yard gain on a simple cutback. I want to say it was Ryan Matthews. As long as they're not Demario Davis ole oleing guys in the hole when they're dead to rights for a yard gain we'll be solid. He was one of the worst tacklers I've ever seen.
I dunno. I had never heard of Edwards before the Jets drafted him. I don't recall ever hearing that Hackett can kick. If one of them can, it would just be gravy, as far as I'm concerned. First and foremost, we have a to find a consistent punter. I'm torn. I love Hackett's consistency in college, his directional ability and accuracy, but I also love the power in Edwards' leg.
