Since when does playing 3 years in college mean you are ready for the NFL and what system/terminology did he go through that is similar to what the jets run? I didn't hear that at all.

As far as the team as a whole we are made up of a bunch of veterans so we better be in win now mode! And we will compete it's not like we are the 76ers tanking for draft picks. We should be knocking on the door of the playoffs schedule or not and in the NFL you never know.

OLB is one of the hardest positions for a rookie to come in an, start and play well, but I think there's a time to bring in vets and a time not to. Right now, I think it's better to wait and see what Mauldin, Jenkins and Bishop can do in OTAs. Let them get all the reps. I don't think anyone else will sign Freeney in the interim. I don't think they have the money to sign anyone right now anyway. They might as well wait and see what the kids can do. If Mauldin and/or Jenkins both look shaky in OTAs and TC, I'm sure that Mac will find the money and sign Freeney, bring Pace back, or find another vet.

Well, the Jets are trying to establish a winning culture and want to be as competitive as possible, so in that sense they are in "win now" mode, but they're not all in on trying to win it all this year, nor should they be. No, we won't be tanking, and may be knocking on the doors of the playoffs again. If by "in the NFL you never know" you mean that if the Jets can sneak into the playoffs you never know what may happen, sorry, I don't buy that. That's desperate fan talk imo. IMO in all likelihood, if the Jets made the playoffs, they'd be one and done.

Agree with the spirit of the OG post. The defense should be improved regardless of Mauldin's development, but if he shows some progress they're poised to be one of the best in the league.

Lol 8 sacks for Mauldin. You guys are really grounded in reality.

He went on to say that Mauldin will be cut if he doesn't reach 12 sacks

Can you clarify this post? Are you saying 8 sacks is funny and people who think he'll get there aren't grounded in reality? Or are you saying 12 sacks is funny and people who think he'll get there aren't grounded in reality, but 8 sacks is accurate? Or maybe you're just saying fuck you, I don't know.

He got 4 last year, in what I assume is limited snaps. (I couldnt find any official numbers)

With more playing time, and hopefully just some natural improvement going from year 1 to year 2, I dont think 6-8 is unmanageable.

24% of the defensive snaps according to football outsiders

he needs to improve against the run to get more snaps.

Yeah, Bowles has said himself that he has to get better at the position overall to get on the field more. Don't see him as a sack specialist but you never know.

I think 6-8 sacks this season is easily reachable for Mauldin. Anything beyond that would be gravy, in my opinion.

That's what I said originally regarding a Vet free agent signing. Wait and see how early offseason activities go and if Jenkins or Mauldin or for that matter Marcus Wiliams is not where they need to be bring someone in.

Had that one int Fitzpatrick threw been a touchdown we would have been riding a six game winning streak going into the playoffs and were red hot. I don't see how you can say we would not be competitive in the playoffs riding a streak like that. I think had that one pass been a touchdown and not a turnover and we made the playoffs you would be singing a much different tune. In fact I'd bet you would say we should go all in. I know you won't say that but even if we lost in the wildcard game this entire board would not be talking longterm progression of a third round rookie they would be say what takes us to the next level.

He also did it against some pretty bad teams last year. The schedule is much tougher, and the Jets will be facing better teams( offense lines) .

4 sacks again for Mauldin is what we can expect from him in 2016.

I disagree. He was a rookie last season, adjusting to life in the NFL, learning the D, and wasn't even on the field that much. He's had a year in the system, two offseasons in an NFL weight room, and should be on the field a lot more. There is little reason to expect that he'd only have 4 sacks again this year.

having alot of veterans doesnt mean you should be in win now mode. having a team that is a legit contender with veterans on it means you should be in win now mode. we are not close to that.

when you have a team of vets who ceiling is 9-10 wins, then you dont mortgage the future so they can embarass themselves and miss the playoffs. you invest in the future and hope those vets can groom the next up and coming players for this team.

Our current roster is absolutely good enough to win a SB if we had an above average QB, e.g. Rivers or Palmer. We don't of course, even if Fitz returns, so a SB isn't going to happen. But all the good young players in the world won't get us where we need to be without the QB.

Who said I wanted to mortgage the future? We were talking about signing a veteran OLB or CB who can start right away rather than throwing a player like Jenkins in the fire. Jenkins right now is our starting OLB and I'm not comfortable with that I want a veteran to teach him the ropes. I am well aware of this teams capabilities and we were not that far off last year.
