Excuse me...but I just woke up....but I have an excuse....I don't make about $250,000 a year (or whatever Mike T gets) as the GM of the Jets. BUT,,,Marques Colston, receiver, played four years at Hofstra,,,,is 6-4 and 223 lbs and was drafted by New Orleans in the seventh round...I know alot of teams passed on him,,,but my God,,,he played right under the Jets noses for four years.. Halfway thru this season he is on pace for 88 receptions, 1400 yards, a 15.9yards per catch and 14 touchdowns...
I was thinking the same thing this morning. With Horn out, this guy is getting alot of throws his way. Great size for a possession WR- not sure of his speed but I suspect on the slower side which coupled with Hostra as his school, probably brought him down the 7th round. You shouldn't be so angry, after all, we did land that lovely defensive tackle, Patch Adams, who is currently taking up valuable space on the practice squad. Life is all about woulda coulda shoulda.... Don't forget, this guy has Drew Brees throwing his way, so I doubt that his numbers would be so prolific if he were on the Jets- rather, they might be along the lines of a Jericho Cotchery...
A lot of teams saw him as a straight line speed guy ONLY... they were wrong... this happens with every draft.
You can go back into every draft == and see guys who were not drafted and became great. Usually, you see a guy and figure out reasons not to take him. Read John Feinstein's book Next Man Up -- which is much too long -- but talks about how the draft works from the inside (the Ravens). Good information.
Before he was drafted I liked him and Mike Hass who both went to the Saints , Hass has now gone to the Bears. As mentioned his size and ability should have been enough for the scouts to at least take a bit of interest.
NFL Network commented on him about 2 weeks ago. They said that 6 teams including the Jets and Cowboys had offered him to come to camp as a free agent. He was picked like 4 or 5 picks before Mr. Irrelevant. We probably would have had a shot had he not been drafted.
Exactly. And I would hope the Jets are focused on their own business and not scouting every player from a small college program like Hofstra just because they train there. That would be a lot of wasted time for an occaisional good player.
What makes it even more inexcusable is the legacy of Chrebet from Hofstra to the Jets. Sorry, but you can't miss on guys in your own backyard (literally).
Yes, you can. We had absolutely no room for WR on the roster. Just look at what happened to Dante Ridgeway, who had a pretty impressive camp, but just no room on the roster.
