I honestly believe that NFL players get screwed out of more prime time pay than any other pro athlete. The NFL PA accepts conditions from the owners that are Spartan at best. At least NBA and MLB get paid what their worth.
I agree with both of those statements, and yet, I still wouldn't pay it. I'm just a believer that, in football, (very much unlike basketball, for example) no single player outside the realm of an elite franchise quarterback is worth the kind of money that MO Wilkerson is supposedly asking for.
if Richardson gets suspended does his money count against the cap this year? and does this year count toward him becoming a rfa?
Am I looking at a different link than you? Average salary says close to 17m. That's what people are talking about when they mention annual salary, the average take throughout the life of the contract. Regardless, the annual salary number is pretty irrelevant, it's the guaranteed dollars that matter. And 51m guaranteed is a pretty hefty sum.
Call me crazy but I would be looking to lock up Sheldon or Wilkerson based upon who will sign for less. Both players are better than average 3-4 DEs and most teams would be lucky to have either one. Keep one, trade the other, and use the remaining cap to fix other problems.
Great thread. Agreed, 100%. I was ready to cut Sheldon after that 2nd fiasco. Mo is a class act and hope he gets a long term deal done with Gang Green.
One thing to address is the idea that we "can't" pay Mo because of how close to the cap we are. It's not really true; people see the team $2 million under the cap and think signing a player to a huge extension is impossible, but it's a misconception. If the Jets signed Mo to a new deal, the vast majority of the guaranteed money would be paid out in 2016, 2017 and 2018. His cap hit for 2016 is already $15.7 mil, so if you gave him a new deal you aren't going to raise that by much, and you may even be able to lower the first year hit and create MORE cap space. In 2017, the Jets are projected to have ~ $60 mil in cap space according to articles I've seen, so the year 2 hit isn't a problem. Then in 2018 you have a rising cap and bloated contracts in Revis, Brick, Harris, Marshall etc coming off the books. Whether or not they WANT to sign him to a big deal is another issue, but they definitely CAN.
im going to go out on a limb here and say that the ass raping that espn and nbc have taken with the huge amounts of money they paid for tv rights in the recent past may have soured them on doing it again. its entirely possible that the next tv contracts could go down rather than up.
for me signing mo has nothing to do with this years cap and everything to do with not wanting to overpay a defensive lineman. 15M per and 40 million gauranteed is a poor long term decision, forget this year.
I believe Richardson needs to be on the roster or injured reserve lists for a minimum of 6 games to have the year qualify towards free agency requirements. I could be wrong on this. Those are definitely the requirements for vesting a year for other purposes.
The contracts are only going to go down if viewership goes down. The real question is who will be bidding. As you point out the NFL deals have at times been less than ideal from a revenue standpoint for the people who had them.
All of us on this board understand that Mo is established, that's why he is wanting the money he is. As I've said many times before I don't blame him for trying to maximize his value either via contract or via other avenues in NYC. But there is this small little factor called the salary cap. With a CB eating up 17M this year, a LT earring up 12M, a C 9M and a slot corner at 9M this team needs to turn the youth potential into proven talent quickly. Mo is the odd man out because we have the potential to replace him with Leo. Who going to play LT? Who's going to play CB (not that we can deal or cut Mevis), who's going to play center? Mo is replaceable
The problem is Richardson's suspensions. Otherwise this would be the ideal way to approach the problem. As it is the Jets are kind of stuck with letting Mo go and then hoping that Richardson is more reasonable (and available) for 2017 and 2018. The Leonard Williams pick was a huge bonus for the Jets. Having a top 3 defensive lineman in the draft drop to 6 was a lot like having a Warren Sapp drop out of the top 10 for the Bucs and they built a dynasty around that.
Wish Mo would stay,,wish they would keep him,,,,,Richardson although talented will eventually slip up and be gone its just a matter of time .
I'm not paying either of them honestly....id rather build with space eaters upfront and speed on the edges and at LB.
And only $21M was guaranteed on the date he signed the deal. He needed to play two more seasons to get the rest of the guarantees to vest, giving the Texans much needed protection against an early career-altering injury in the contract.
With our luck the Jets finally land a franchise QB like Petty and can't pay him because we have 55M tied up on two D lineman and a CB...it's all about finding guys who outperform their contracts and rewarding them with reasonable contracts when the time comes up. If said player wants more then the franchise has budgeted, try and trade that asset. Just my opinion though. That's why this forum is great, we can all voice our opinions. Happy Easter everybody
That's your preference and that's fine. Plenty of ways to build a defense. I'd rather have a nice mix of interior pass-rushers and speed rushers in a way that they compliment one another in the run and pass game. Again, no issue with running a conventional 3-4, but that's not what the Bowles defense is specifically.
