I'd hang on to Victor Hobson. Once we draft or aquire a dominant passrushing OLB we could move Hobson to ILB where I believe he'd be great in the 3-4. Hobson is big, and a great one on one tackler (usually). Without having to roam sideline to sideline his weaknesses wouldn't be as evident. He'd be good as a backup 3-4 ILB. Thomas too should be held on to and could be better if we get a dominant OLB from elsewhere. Robertson should be axed asap. Ellis we should hold on to for now imo... Barrett isn't that bad I'd keep him for depth. He makes plays whether you like to admit it or not. JMac, Barlow, Blaylock, and maybe Moore (who has dissapointed me terribly this year) should get the axe. Clement has been surprisingly solid for a guy who wasn't even supposed to start for us when we signed him.
Jets future (hopefully) Justin McCariens Cut Blaylock or Barlow Cut (maybe try and trade barlow) Clement Cut Ramsey Cut (hopefully traded) Dwight Cut Ellis or Robertson traded Hobson or Thomas Cut Barret Cut Oelhoffen Cut (unless ellis & Thomas leave) Shlegel Cut FA Pickups (all veterans) DT DE RB QB CB Draft DT RB WR DE LB
He's still mike furrey, and once again we let some bum have the game of his dreams against us. Not to mention the secondary allowing a 4th and 7 conversion and even worse a 4th and 11.
You actually didnt get it, I was referring to the fact that he did'nt name eric barton in his plans for the future. He actually did I just did'nt read correctly. Nice try though.
On the contrary, I think this begs for an explanation. Shed some light on how Mangini's 3-4 differ from a typical 3-4. All of the 3-4 defenses in the NFL today have common components to them, all of which have been brought up in this thread. What exactly is the distinction here?
chatam and kassell should be gone...i really wanna see anthony schlegel get some PT...and obviously we are in need on a new NT, but with kimo up there in age, i wouldn't mind at least giving d-rob a try at end
Whats wrong with Chatham and Kassell? I don't think either was expected to start, they are both role players. One of the hardest things for a rookie to do is to learn how to play inside 3-4 linebacker. If you look at some of the other teams that play 3-4, rarely will you see those teams draft a guy and insert him right into the mix. I expect that by next year Schlegel will understand what his role is. Notice how the Patriots or the Steelers never throw a young player into the MLB position. It's just so different from playing MLB in a 4-3 because of the three man front. I expect next year that AS and Vilma are the starting ILB's. I would like to see if D-Rob can play end in a 3-4 but imo he can't. He's just not a two gap, disciplined lineman. His job should be to stay in his gap and occupy blockers. But his body type and his ability is more about shooting a gap and creating pressure. On obvious passing downs he can create havoc but in a base 3-4 at NT or DE he does not fit in.
I think its time to consider a significant upgrade at the guard position. Does anyone know Kendall's status at the end of this season? I would not mind seeing him leave town if the circumstances are right. Also, someone mentioned trading Ellis. I'm not sure of his contract specifics, but as some of you know, I AM NOT A FAN OF HIS GAME (or lack thereof). What are the odds another team would pick up his contract?
man this is way too early. whats the need to make a thread about this. players are still developing and we just came off a bye which can turn a team around. We got an entire off-season to talk about this. I know its a bye week and things are lame but give these guys a break.
I watch Bryan Thomas and he appears to have no pass rushing moves whatsoever. I thought he had a lot of speed when we drafted him but I don't see it.
I think there is a gaping need at NT. That has to be addressed, and not with Pouha, though he should get his shot to compete. Elsewhere on defense we have Vilma, Barton, Hobson and possibly Chatham who should stay, presumably we give Schlegel another year, beyond that we need to clear out the mediocre linebackers and get some genuine depth. On the D-line we can keep D-Rob, Pouha, Ellis, Ball and Moore around. von Oelhoffen can skidaddle, the rest can be dumped and quality depth added. In the secondary I'd like to see Miller, Barrett, Rhodes, D.Coleman, E.Coleman, E.Smith and Dyson stick. We need to add a potential starter to compete at both SS and CB though, and, again, add quality depth. On offense we are set at QB with CP #1, KC #2 and PR #3, all under contract. At runningback we can go with the Houston-Barlow-Washington trifecta, I think that can be and will be productive. I especially like what I see from Barlow in short yardage and around the goalline. We need a proper fullback like Lorenzo Neal or Tony Richardson. I'd not be opposed to resigning Jerald Sowell, because he's one of my favourites. Askew offers little that someone else can't do better. Tight ends, Baker is a solid #1 option, Dearth is obviously valued and the others can be upgraded. Receivers, I'd look to move J-Mac, he'll be a malcontent if he's #3 another year. Coles, Cotchery, Smith I like, Dwight can move on now and we can look to the draft for another player or two, keep the unit young and fresh. On the line I'd be looking to draft a guard to groom behind Kendall for a year, and a right tackle upgrade will be necessary. I'd like to keep Jones as backup for D'Brick. There's not too much that can't be fixed once the defensive front 7 is in place and we establish a pass rush. There isn't a team in the league without some deficiencies, and we can absolutely compete at this level without major surgery.
