Definitely on pins and needles about this. I realize that Fitzpatrick is entitled to try to make as much money as possible, but it seems that he and his agent are being unrealistic which is why everything is in limbo. The bottom line is that we didn't make the playoffs with him, and quite frankly, I want to actually start rooting for a QB that will be here for 10 years, not these stop gap types that come and go. Maybe we can catch lightning in a bottle with RGIII or Kaepernick, maybe not, but you gotta keep hustling until you find a franchise QB.
This is like one big stand off now it seems. Hopefully once a move is made the rest will follow like dominoes Doesn't seem like anybody is really eager at this point with this lot of QB's either.
Through Fitz the "quarterbacks" eyes: 1) NYJ - Gailey, weapons (marshall, decker, forte, powell), continuity 2) DEN - New OC, weapons (D. Thomas, E. Saunders), Mark Sanchez's boogies 3) SF - New OC (psycho), weapons...? Through Fitz the "agents" eyes 1) NYJ - $ 2) DEN - $ & some change 3) SF - $$
It sure is raciest. You have to place the booger quickly and accurately. It's almost like a slight of hand magic trick. I speak from experience.
Special teams rankings since the start of the Rex Ryan era courtesy of Football Outsiders. Westhoff retired after the 2012 season: 2015 - 25, 2014 - 16, 2013 - 10, 2012 - 21, 2011 - 4, 2010 - 5, 2009 - 6 We were bad this year, but we were average in 2014 and above average in 2013.
What's preventing the 49ers from signing Fitz and keeping Kaepernick? They have the cap space. Given the QB shortage they could try and retain him, then if there are enough QB shortages due to injury trade him off for players or multiple picks. Perhaps some time working with Fitz boosts his market appeal. Obviously this is unlikely but could still happen.
Common sense? They have Gabbert for a little more than 2million as a backup, you think they could get Fitz cheaper than that when he reportedly wont sign $7-8 million with he Jets?
Today is National Pi Day and the Jets haven't given a 3 year deal to 14 the Harvard grad? What the hell?
The whole problem is the 2016 salary cap. When they traded for Fitz last year, they probably assumed that he'd be 3-5M against the cap this year. Now they'd need to find another $10M to give him what he wants. When you look at overthecap.com, it's not easy to find another $10M. You'd need to cut D'Brick (and eat $5M in dead money), or trade Mo, to get that kind of $. When you study that cap details it's scary. There's just not alot there to be had, and we're already $2M short just to sign draft picks.
The dynamics of last off season were different. I think it was hope for the best with him but plan for the worst. Fitz was that plan, and if Geno couldn't get the job done Fitz would be an improvement. That's much different than what they face this year. We are coming off a season of good QB play. There is a benchmark that Geno will be compared against if he takes over for Fitz and that benchmark is a record setting QB performance. If Petty doesn't do well it can be excused because he's a rookie. If Geno stinks it up again that is something they should have seen coming and is their mistake by sabotaging the season in expectation that he'd be any different. There's no way it can be Geno because they don't have the luxury of hoping for the best like they did last season.
I think April 1st is the date. On that day kaep contract becomes guaranteed. Figure sf will release or trade him by then. Once kaep situation settled then fitz will decide what to do.
Why would they be negotiating for Fitz and with the 49ers for Kap if they thought Geno or Petty were capable of starting?
I don't think the coaching staff has lost much confidence in Geno as people think. If they have why haven't they cut him? Or try to trade him?
But if they have confidence in him, why would they offer Fitz more than Chase got? And why would they be talking to the 9ers about a trade? Why wouldn't they just announce that Geno is the starter and move on?
