All true sir, but when you re-write History be sure to remain accurate. Tanny 'rolling the dice and throwing way our future' resulted in Mark Sanchez, a top college prospect we'd give our left nuts for another shot at (see Winston/Mariota threads from last year). Mark didn't work out (minus 2x AFCCGs and the highest QB rating in NY Jets' playoff history), but Tanny was never scared to go for the kill shot. Next up, Brett Favre on a one year, $15M rental and one tiny bicep tear away from SB Ring #2. Ultimately Tanny's kill shots didn't 'kill', and we (Jets org) are left to pay the piper (as in very few draft pics, very lean team).

My final say about Tanny: Many teams are locked into mediocricy in part due to having an owner, GM, HC, etc who are afraid to go all in. Rolling the dice takes stones, and can only result in one of two outcomes: 1) A player that dominates and pushes the team to new heights, or 2) A bust that sets the team back 5 yrs. Tanny had stones.

I'm much more excited about the Mac hire than the Bowles hire. The Jets haven't had a United front office since at least 2003, probably earlier. GM gets the credit but the scouts are huge too and hopefully the new ones are good

Hey, I respect your opinion, and I'm not Junc who can't see other peoples perspective on matters, that being said, how would you use the 20th pick to address the needs of the Jets?

Seriously guy, I'm not trying to be sarcastic....:):)

it's so true....if you think about it who of all the top pass rush prospects the last few years have hit into HUGE stars. Very few. First few rounds should be for WR, RB, QB, CB, S, DL.

I know you didn't ask me but I'll answer. Sure if a pass rusher is BPA you go for it. I think the answer is draft BPA on your board the first 2/3 rounds. Then from there start drafting need. If BPA aligns with need all the better. At the end of the day you want quality football players from the draft especially when looking at the top prospects. Can't fall into the trap of hyping a guy up more than he's worth because hes the best available to fit a need. That's how you end up mediocre. The great teams fill need late in drafts, and hit on those picks.

I think turk said it well. I'd add that to me the most important part of the BPA approach is finding someone with a HIGH floor. So far, I trust in Mac. His missteps to date are only mildly to moderately significant but he's a rookie so what the hey. Overall he put together a very good roster all things considered.

This next comment might be derailing the the thread a bit but so far Mac has only made a few missteps: D.Smith (not really anyone's fault and jury is still out but his floor looks suspect), bloated contracts for Revis, Cro, and Harris (possibly caved to CS wished here), and keeping Owusu over W.Powell (concussion prone).

So I did a little research going back to 2010, this is what I found regarding the LB that were drafted up to 2015 in the first round:

There were not many drafted in first round, a lot more DE and Olinemen, so we might see another DE or Olineman chosen by the jets this year.

My grade was based on the player starting and producing, injuries were included in grade. Issues outside of football were not taken into account, just production on field.

What I found was this, that unless there is a team that has a bad FO and they reach for players instead of taking BPA in the first round, you can get a good OLB to anchor the defense. It's not a crapshoot and MM is probably just throwing out decoy statements by saying that you can find a LB in the later rounds and develope them into pass rushers.

Hopefully this will work out for the Jets this year and they can find someone to fill the OLB need, I think the jets will address one of the following 3 areas with the 20th pick, LB, OL, or DL, if they select based on BPA and not on need.

    Flame away men.....;)

    2010-2 were drafted:
    Oakland Raiders-8th pick-Rolando McLain- grade B

    Atlanta Falcons-19th pick- Sean Weatherspoon-grade B
More of an impact player with Atlanta than the Cardinals

    2011-3 were drafted:
Denver Broncos-2nd pick- Von Miller -A
    Niners-7th pick- Aldon Smith-A
    Redskins-16th pick-Ryan Kerrigan-B

    2012-5 were drafted:
    Carolina Panthers-9th pick- Luke Kuchely-A
    Chargers-18th pick-Melvin Ingram-B
    Patriots-25th pick-Dante Hightower-B
    Houston-26th pick-Whitney Mercilus-A
    Packers-28th pick-Nick Perry-D

    2013-4 were drafted:
    Browns-6th pick-Bartaveous Mingo-F
    Steelers-17th pick-Jarvis Jones-C
    Colts-24th pick- Bjoern Werner-D
    Rams-30th pick- Alec Ogletree-A

    2014- 4 were drafted:
    Raiders-5th pick-Khalil Mack-A
    Vikings-9th pick- Anthony Barr-B
    Steelers-15th pick- Shazier-B
    Ravens-17th pick- CJ Mosely-A

    2015-6 were drafted:
    Jags-3rd pick-Dante Fowler-injured
    Falcons-8th pick-Vic Beasley-D
    Steelers-22nd pick- Bud Dupree-D
Broncos-23rd pick- Shane Ray-No grade, did not start
    Panthers-25th pick-Shaquille Thompson-B
    Saints-31st pick-Stephone Anthony-A

Your welcome, I have some time on my hands during the winter months so I figured I would contribute something to the board.

There is ZERO chance the Jets are drafting a DL with the 20th pick..lol

Most Jet fans would go insane at that point, lol.

Im not saying that I want that to happen, please don't get me wrong. I'm strictly going by history of BPA, great RBs and WRs are not left on the board to be taken by the 10th pick let alone 20th.

Historically speaking, good LB, OL and DL are still on the board at 20th.

OMG, can you imagine them grabbing another DL?

    This board would be like:

who says we aren't drafting a DL? We said the same thing last year.

    BPA. BPA. BPA.

It's entirely possible if BPA is DL we take it, since there is no guarantee Sheldon is in the teams future plans.

Yeah and last year right after the draft we all were saying so ok we'll trade Mo or someone this year because we're overstocked and now that it's here half the board is griping that they want to keep Mo.

Macc is so refreshing after Mikey "it's a process" T.
It used to be such a waste of time listening to Tanny speak but Macc is a very informative and interesting interview.

I agree with a lot of being said but I do make one change to BPA. If you have a need close to the top of your list (top3? top5?) If an outside pass rusher is the #3 BPA at twenty you skip over #1 and #2.
Side note: Is anyone else as excited as I am with how up on Petty mac is? I'm not anointing the kid but it just all feels like it's coming together. It really looks like another year under Fitz and he could (I repeat COULD be) the future of this team.

mac hasnt had a chance to really make missteps or prove worth.

this offseason is where we can really evaluate mac. some tough decisions, not drafting at the top of the rounds. and is no longer in a place where the team can only go up.

i love what he did last offseason, but this is where he earns his money
