Why would that limit our compensation? A team, being us or someone else has to pay up, its part of the cap era. Whatever team ends up with him will know this, and a cap hindered team will likely not pursue him anyway. You don't trade one of your impact players for a devalued compensation just because of another teams need to sign him to a new contract. That's part of this business, any team that wants an impact player like MO will know this as well. I am 100% confident Mac understands this as well and holds the leverage in a trade scenario. We do not have to trade him, its more of a luxery for us, if the compensation isn't right, you just don't do it. Simple as that.
The other team has to take all factors into account including the cap space they will be using. Just like us, they have to consider the opportunity they are losing to spend that cap space on other players in free agency. If they believed that they could get another player almost as good as Mo in free agency for the same compensation a team is not going to give up as much as they would for a similar player still on his rookie deal that could cost much less. While Mo may be better than other free agents at his position this year, keep in mind that Suh (who many of us would have been willing to take in Mo's place) was a UFA last year costing the Dolphins NOTHING in terms of players or picks.
This argument makes no sense to me. So your saying because he is an impact player teams will deny us compensation because they will need to pay this impact player to be under contract for their team. What? How do you suppose teams improve their football team, by avoiding impact players? Nope, I don't think that's it, so I really don't understand your argument. Suh is a terrible example, first of all, he was a FA who was afforded the opportunity to shop around his services and go with the highest bidder. The highest bidder was a sad sack of a team, desperate to find something positive and do something that showed their fans they want to get back on track and are committed to doing so by going out and getting the biggest name on the market. That doesn't mean it was smart, they overpaid him like crazy and the move was made by the same guy who traded for Tim Tebow thinking that was going to be a game changer for our team. There will be NOBODY on the market even close to the talent that MO brings to a team, he can play in any scheme, he is a star player, extremely consistent, young, and is a top 3 player at his position. There is absolutely no way we should take compensation that doesn't fit the player, regardless of the need to sign the guy to a long term deal. You are trading a guy that hasn't even hit his prime yet and he is already playing at an all pro level, every year, you play that hand and let everything else take care of itself. He is too good to not get back a good compensation for and there are many teams that have plenty of cap this offseason that can afford to sign MO long term, cap shouldn't even be an issue with a player of his caliber. Especially after the year be just had.
Go look at the Harvin trade from MIN to SEA. The Hawks didn't give a shit about the financial side, they sent the Vikings a 1st and 3rd rounder I believe AND they had to hand him a ridiculous long term deal on top of it. If you want an impact player (not that Harvin ever was one) you will pay him whatever it takes. Not everybody is going to, but if you want Mo you're not gonna turn down a trade offer because of some financial reason. It's just money. If you have the cap room you might as well use it up, you can't take it with you.
9.5 out of 10 times, these trades end up with the player signing a contract extension, so it never really gets to the point where the player is still under the tag. But we do not pay for the tag.
-you dont trade an all-pro defensive end gets ot the QB for a runningback. thats trading one of the more valuabe positions for one of the least valuable. im ok with tag and trade of wilkerson but if i do it i need a tackle, QB, pass rusher, or corner -letting snacks walk seems like a bad idea. he is one of our lineman who likely wont command insane suh type money -sheldon will never play out his rookie deal. he would certainly hold out if he isnt extended.
cant see how we keep mo and fergeson. and with mo we have guys behind him. our line was already mediocure. with a rookie LT? ouch
