I still like the idea of opting out of our contract with MetLife when it's available and building in Yonkers . Much more accessible from the Connecticut side (fuck your bridges) and it would be our own.
I used to be in the camp that wanted to stay in Jersey for my own personal attendance at the stadium. I was also much younger at that time to the point where I wouldn't have been able to commute on my own. As I've gotten older, I wish they moved. It would've helped the mindset of the franchise and taken us out of the shadow of the Giants. Smh.
Where in Yonkers? Woody had a chance to go to Queens when Manhattan fell thru. He could've owned NY, along side the Mets up there by the Bay....asshole
I don't think Queens would have worked at all. I always thought that was the worst possible option. The highways are already horribly congested around Shea. The 7 train sucks. IMO Queens was never an option unless you're talking waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out, and I don't think there are any trains or highways out there. The site I always heard suggested in Yonkers was the old raceway. MetroNorth goes right by it and they could have added a stop at the stadium. Interstate 87 runs right by it.
Anything is a better option that the current one. The problem with stadiums like MetLife and FedEx Field is that fans are basically forced to drive to an event where drinking is encouraged. Also if the stadium needs to be in Jersey could it at least be in the proximity of shops, bars, and restaurants like Patriot Place as opposed to in the middle of a filthy swamp?
Disagree regarding Queens. The 7 train hooks up with the LIRR and they run special service for the games. The Wilpons have done well there, and the whole area, and surrounding areas, are rejuvenating and would have taken off with the Jets too. It was perfect to go along with Citi Field there. The area was wide open for development. If your talking about Yonkers Raceway. It's a casino now. The Metro North does not go right by it, and public transportation hooking up with it to the track sucks. The Major Deegan Express is adjacent to it tho, as is the Cross County Pkwy, but it's right next to Cross County Mall. Don't see that spot supporting a major stadium at all. That would be a clusterfuck right there.
Gotta agree with @JStokes I was begging for a Jets stadium in Manhattan. It literally makes us the true team of NYC. Instead we got MetLife stadium... Sheldon Silver I hope can get ass-raped big time. That fucking tool Anyone thinking the Jets would not sellout and dominate the noise in Manhattan is nuts. It would be one of the best environments in Sports.
Didn't say it wasn't. Queens over NJ is the point. I said that already I wanted Manhattan in the worst way. Woody turned down Queens when it was being given to him after Manhattan fell through. A stadium near to Citi Field would've been spectacular compared to what he did Anything is better than going in with the Giants at that place = fail
When the stadium was being considered, I don't think the Casino was built, and if it's the spot I remember, there wasn't a mall near there, either. I lived up in Tarrytown from last '92 through late '94. Maybe that stuff was built after I moved back into Brooklyn. IMO that would have been a great place for the stadium. Easy access for fans from Long Island, NYC, NY state and NJ via the Tappan Zee. As for Queens, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think traffic would have been a disaster for fans driving in from NJ, Long Island or upstate who wanted to tailgate, and would have been a disaster for everyone else wanting to travel to the city from Long Island or vice versa, or just get around that part of Queens. There might have been physical space for the stadium, but I think transportation would have been a nightmare.
Well the poster brought up Yonkers as an option for now. I never considered Yonkers a realistic option tho. There are no Metro area highways that are good, and that Cross County area from the rest of NYC, and L.I. is horrible. Whatever. It didn't happen. But it could've worked just as easily in Queens as it would've in Manhattan, or the Bronx for that matter like Yankee Stadium. And Citi Field and that area is a winner for the Mets, and would've been that much better with the Jets
True, but only ONE stadium will be built. If there's gonna be two teams, its the same scenario we have. I hope for the Charger and Raider fans they get deals done and not move. Sharing a stadium sucks. Kinda like sharing a wife.
I would have too. Taking the PATH over to 33rd st and walking over would have been pretty easy. I could tell at the time that some corrupt shit was going on in NY that was pushing back on it. The meadowlands probably made it easy for Woody to stay in NJ and NYC made it extremely hard for him, that's why we have the result we have now.
Yeah because there are tons of places to go shopping and quality bars around where the Yankees and Mets play. /sarcasm
The proposed Manhattan stadium project was supposed to built on top of the Hudson Yards. That would of been an ideal location considering all the trains that come in from NJ Transit, LIRR and amtrak. You also would of had a ton of public space to go with it. They could of built that there, knocked MSG down and relocated it to where the Manhattan West Projects are, and then recreated the original Penn Station. Potentially, the Super Bowl would of been held in NYC, and not Rutherford, and NYC could of hosted the Olympics. But Woody was fighting an uphill battle against several development companies, the Jacob Javitz, and James Dolan. James Dolan was fighting to keep MSG where it was. The land on top of Penn is a lease only. Dolan was about to sink a billion dollars into a renovation for MSG. There was no way he was going to let Woody build a stadium. I would not doubt that some of Dolans money is in Silvers pocket. I bet if Dolan had to do it again, he would of just built a new MSG. I believe the lease is up in 10 years. But the real kicker here, is who ended up with the Hudson Yards property. Related Properties. Related is owned by Steven Ross, the owner of the Dolphins.
