Lets be honest, D'Brick overall has been a rock solid player and has been a special all these years for us. He and Mangold are truly unique and I admire both. (Mangold more obviously, because D'Brick does get beat quite a bit) He also never missed a game I think which is incredible. So we are in a tough predicament and I dont know what we should do...Left Tackle is such a critical position but D'Brick makes alot of money and is getting old. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/dbrickashaw-ferguson/ 2016 Age: 32 Base: $8,625,000 Roster Bonus: $1,000,000 Option Bonus: $650,000 Workout Bonus: $750,000 Restructured Bonus $3,082,000 Cap hit: $14,107,000 Dead Cap post June 1: $4,233,999 2017 Age: 33 Base: $11,275,000 Roster Bonus: $1,000,000 Workout Bonus: $750,000 Restructured Bonus $1,282,000 Cap hit: $14,307,000 Dead Cap post June 1: $1,282,000
We either convince him to take a pay cut, move all of his bonus money into 2016 and keep him one more year, or cut him loose.
He can get a lot more from other teams so I don't see him be open to that. 6-7 mil. maybe (probably not) but I'm not willing to pay him that much either.
Absolutely restructure him and Mangold both if possible. Look at getting a replacement to groom also.
The Jets save 10.3M if they cut Brick after June 1. Considering the Jets are currently 15M under the salary cap, cutting Brick means gaining 67% more cap space. I'm not sure how the team passes that up. We also need to consider the following: Brick and his family most likely have grown accustomed to living around here. If things don't work out with the Jets, I imagine he will be playing with a team close by. It would seem as though the Jets have a shot at bringing him back after the cut.
Why are people so quick to suggest an LT-RT move? It's not that simple. I can barely scratch my ass with the other hand, never mind stop opposing linemen.
There's not much we can do. Unless he decides to be a team player and take a big pay cut which he has no reason to do since we likely won't find someone better we can't really cut him.
I suggested the RT move until I was informed about the differences between the two positions. Only thing we can do insist on a paycut and look hard at a replacement. If he balks too hard you have to consider letting him go. Of course that's entirely dependent on being able to pick up another LT someplace before hand. We could pay two guys with what we are paying him. I say get him down to the 7 or 8 mil range. Take that savings and get another guard then draft a tackle this year and another next year. Mac likes to deal, so I could see us getting something with a late pick to round out the depth along the o line. Tannenbaum and then Idzick with help from Rex really did a horrid job of taking care of the o line. Hell, they really just ignored it for 6 years with the occasional project pick to make it look like they were doing something.
