You're mixing up two different things. It's not about team record or team perspective, that doesn't tell you anything about how good a player is. You want to look at what he actually does on the field in order to determine how good he is. Nobody is arguing what would be more successful for the Texans. They flat out stunk the past few years when he put up 20+ sacks. Now that his numbers are "down" they're doing better. So one has nothing to do with the other. It's almost blasphemous at this point to not call him the greatest of all time and end it there, this thread is a good example. Here's actually what kicked things off. I didn't just randomly go "well...Watt is overrated!". I saw the piece on NFL.com and I felt the guys made pretty good, valid points. That's it. Feel free to make counter points if you disagree because I don't have any. I value a clean sack against Joe Thomas 4 or 5 times over a sack on a bum like Qvale or Breno. You can have 5 sacks against Winters and it means less to me than a clean sack on Joe Thomas. And Watt hasn't even be able to do THAT. He's beating guys, but he's not putting up the numbers that would justify putting him up there with elite pass rushers that put up the same numbers against All Pro's AND double teams, instead of a backup Guard or Center. Look at the video, the guys he's beating. The rookie backup RT for the Bengals (even that guy pretty much shut him down), Breno (against us), Jah Reid from the Chiefs, another bum. He also beat Wes Johnson in that game against us. So again, my point is not that he sucks or that the Texans are stupid for doing that. He simply is overhyped. That doesn't mean he sticks. But I don't think he's proven that he can beat elite talent on a regular basis and to me that's what you have to do if you want to be considered the best. Von Miller does, Sheldon does, Mo does, all the elite pass rushers do. Watt doesn't. So how do you justify putting him up there when he's not proving himself by beating other elite guys? I don't see how that justifies calling him the best player in the NFL. Here's an example. Let's say we play the Titans. Mettenberger will do anything he can to avoid Revis. Now Revis gets injured, he wasn't targeted once, and Darrin Walls takes his spot. Mettenberger will now go after Walls and probably put up great stats. Good thing from a team perspective, it's smart. It doesn't mean Mettenberger is a great QB. And no, I'm not comparing Mettenberger to Watt, I'm comparing two guys going after the worst players and benefiting off of that "strategy". It doesn't prove anything. Sherman used to be that guy up until last year, he didn't shadow any receiver. He was shutting guys down that weren't elite. He didn't shut Julio Jones and company down. This year the Seahawks were forced to make him shadow great receivers and he's proving right now he's one of the best corners in the league, he can shut elite guys down. That's the step Watt has to take. And if you watched the Pats game last week Jabaal Sheard absolutely destroyed Breno, all day long. He abused Breno worse than Watt did, so yeah, other guys can dominate backups as well, sometimes dominate them even more than Watt would, that's a fact. Watt doesn't stink, he's just overrated. MJD put it pretty well in that video. Overrated means somebody feels like Watt might be on his way to be the best defender in history, the best DE in history. In order for him to prove he's worthy of that he needs to go out there and beat elite talent on a regular basis as well, which he hasn't done. He's still a great player, nobody is arguing that. Plus what makes you think the Texans wouldn't benefit from Watt taking on the best player on the O-Line to give the rest of the front 7 easier matchups? That to me would make a lot more sense, than letting Clowney or Mercilus go against a Joe Thomas each time, they can't beat him. Watt could. And if you move him there you have at least 2 other pass rushers (as well as Crick), that's 3 other guys who WILL win their 1 on 1's on the other side against scrubs. So in theory you have 4 guys who can get to the QB. Now Watt might not get there as often, but the rest of the guys would cause even more havoc, the entire defense would benefit, not just one player. In theory. Which is actually what Bowles here and which is something I prefer.
the contracts matter less then the player response to it. we can give mo 12M or franchise him. but if he sits out it doesnt matter. mo can be happy with 12, but then if shelly says he wants his 12M now as well, thats an issue i just dont see how we can keep both AND fix the problem at Left Tackle. not to mention marshall probably will want a raise. i think the best move is to trade mo or shelly for an OLB, LT, or QB
We are missing a good inside linebacker as well. Harris is good, but he can't cover the running backs out of the backfield. Jets need to resign Mo and worry about Sheldon maybe 2 or 3 years down the line when he decides to be a good team player and stay out of trouble. This is Mo's time. He's been the best defender on our team this season.
I think he's been for the last 3-4 years to be honest, not once did he complain about how much he makes compared to other elite guys, or even guys drafted in the same year (Dareus). Kept his mouth shut, played his ass off, there's nobody that deserves a new, big long term deal than Mo and he hasn't even hit his prime yet.
This is very true, I have to find the NFLN sound-byte, where he lines up against a shitty guard and beats him like a drum. He then says to his teammates, I'm lining up against that guy each snap. Sure you can completely change the game this way, but if he can't beat the best offensive lineman in the league, you can consider him overrated. A lot of the league's pass rushers do this though like Von Miller - I remember back in 2011 he was abusing Wayne Hunter all game long.
Sorry, the answer we were looking for was Snacks. Just for playing you will get a copy of our home game and a year's supply of Turtle Wax.
Shelden speaks, and I can't help but get annoyed over this... Sheldon Richardson: Jets underpaid for $84M Wilkerson “I was happy for him, real happy for him. Well deserved, probably deserved more, but that’s just my opinion,” said Richardson, who missed the past three practices with an excused absence. Richardson said he was pleased with the NFL ruling June 30 to suspend him just one game for violating the NFL personal conduct policy. He pleaded guilty in January to resisting arrest after he led police on a high-speed chase in July 2015. Richardson avoided any jail time, was given two years of probation and 100 hours of community service. “It’s a blessing. I’m grateful,” he said of the league’s ruling. “I’m ready for when I can come back and play.” http://nypost.com/2016/08/02/sheldon-richardson-jets-underpaid-for-84m-wilkerson/
Saw the clip on SNY Sportsnite. The reporters had him cornered and he answered pretty much off the cuff. Looked harmless on the video. I actually got a kick out of him there. Looks a lot worse on print headlines than it is. It's not a bad thing that he wishes well for Mo and says Mo deserves everything he got. That's what all the players are about He needs to be on guard with that horde of rats tho and learn to say nothing to them...just gibberish
When these players take the field together? They play for one another. There's really not a story here. We all know if Richardson lives up to high expectations he'll be looking for a nice contract. And rightfully so because on the field he's an absolute animal. Wilkerson has taken younger defensive lineman under his wings (such as Richardson) year after year. Mo's been nothing but a leader so it's nice to see his teammates paying homage by complimenting the type of contract he finally received. Now, if Richardson would've stated how Mo wasn't deserving or was overpaid? Well, then that could be considered a headline story as potential locker room turmoil. I think it's nice to see Richardson talking up Wilk; their teammates on the same defensive line. In closing Sheldon's going to receive a long term contract from us. There's just no way our G.M will allow a player of Sheldon's dominance during his youth, to get away (as he didn't with Mo). He'll become locked up. Just the other day Mac was telling reporters how just because we've paid Mo, doesnt mean we can't afford to keep Richardson. Mac also mentioned how the salary cap will increase; making it possible to obtain and keep both. He's already thinking ahead and will work on finding ways to keep our best young talent in Richardson in order to keep the leagues most dominant D-Line together for years to come. But it's all up to Sheldon himself to get on the right track. Serve this one game suspension and stay on clear of troubles for 2-3 years and he isn't going anywhere.
Richardson talks too much. With his mouth running the way it is, we better get 12 to 15 sacks this year. And NO dumbass flags in crucial moments.
Lol nah bro the answer we were looking for WAS Mo, I demand you take back that turtle wax this instant.
Richardson would be lucky to get the deal Mo got with his suspension past even in the next 2 years. Dude overvalues himself for one good rookie season and that is it.
Ehhhh his second year was better than his rookie season and still was versatile and produced despite injuries last season. You're undervaluing Sheldon quite a bit if you think he'd be lucky to get what Mo got.
Now that we've locked up Mo and have Williams the chances of signing Shelden have gone waaaay down. Unless Bowles finds a way to keep all three on the field together successfully - Shelden is a goner. Even then it would be a tough pill to swallow. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
