With JJ down on IR and Deon Bailey's play so bad last week that he was pulled for Marcus Williams. I'd like to see him get a shot because the safety position is really lacking some depth at the moment.

EDIT:Looks like I forgot to mention who I meant by "him". I was talking about Rontez Miles.

Bailey wasn't terrible, not the best situation to throw a guy in to. Brady has made many a defensive player look horrible.

Bailey was OK. Of course there's a dropoff but he held his own. Marcus Williams could probably play the SS role. Rontez Miles would be nice as a box safety if he's on the PS, maybe split time with Marcus Williams (run & pass). But who knows, Pryor might be back this week. Doubt it but we'll see.

He gave up like 5 completions for about 60 yards all in under a quarter. Yeah, I'd say that is pretty terrible.

Like I said, there were 6 things that went bad for the jets (Marshall non-catch, Fitz fumble, Ivory hurt, Pryor hurt). Any one of those don't happen and the Jets win easily. Pryor getting injured was probably the worst.

I respectfully disagree. Ivory is a game changer man. If he was healthy, we convert in the red zone instead of throwing to cumberland. Both games we lost this year was when Ivory was hurt

Normally I agree, but we still had a good chance to win at the end sans Ivory until NE converted on 3rd and 17 (Pryor). But who knows, with Ivory tearing it up we made have won by 15 with or without Pryor

He's a backup safety who's had to cover Gronk and Edelman, New England thrives on those matchups. That's why we've always played them competitively because I think our D has the fewest holes.

The guy is a backup safety on a team with no depth at the position. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it isn't Bailey that has destroyed anything.

Gilchrist is a SS by trade who is playing very well after moving to FS for the Jets this year. In Calvin Pryor's absence the question might be do the Jets have anybody else who can play FS and let Gilchrist move up in the box until Pryor is back?

Although I do think Gilchrist is an excellent FS when covering anyone but Gronk, at this point they are probably better served using a backup CB at FS and doing exactly what you're saying.

Gilchrist is a converted CB. played it in college, and was the Nickel back for SD prior to switching to S.
His versatility and coverage experience makes him the perfect fit to be our FS, which is a much harder skillset to find than SS.

outside of Gilchrist and Bailey, do we have a healthy S on the roster?
thought they should have brought Miles up, but guess they will gamble that Williams or Walls can play in a pinch.

Does anyone know why Rontez Miles doesn't have eyebrows?

No, Gilchrist is a FS and the reason he looked bad in San Diego was because he was put at SS because they already had Eric Weddle as a better FS. IIRC Gilchrist is a converted cornerback, he's got the speed and cover skills to play a traditional FS but his tackling and size can and have been exposed at the SS position in the past. If he needs to play SS in order to field a somewhat competent secondary with Pryor out, then by all means we should do it, but Gilchrist is way more of a FS than a SS by almost any definition.

edit: he was drafted as a CB and played the nickelback. He's 5'10" and sub 200 lbs. That's not what any team looks for in a box safety dude.

Yes, I'm aware of his background. And no, outside of Gilchrist and Bailey, we don't have a single active healthy safety.

I think the problem is that the injured safeties we do have aren't done for the year, we have a zillion corners and we need a roster spot for Ridley. And all the other injuries.

It's hard to activate a PS safety when you prioritize other positions more heavily.

ok i would not consider Gilchrist at SS when we have other options, as that would just create a bigger hole at FS.

in terms of activating Miles, i don't think it's a matter of prioritizing other positions, so much as it is a matter of who do you cut?
to your point, we are nursing a lot of guys with temporary injuries, occupying roster spots without playing.
i think i'd cut Bowen and bring Miles up tho. it's not good heading into a game with no backup option.
