Not soon enough for there to already be a thread about it.

I think you have to think probably have to think sometime next year. Fitz is playing well enough to not lose us games ....yet and I do think Geno will be better so I don't see a hurry. We have a good defense and some good parts in place but I don't see the rush to throw Petty in right now.

My poor buddy is a Browns fan and we watch the Browns and Jets simultaneously and I feel bad for him, Mcown is not that good. He definitely can't lead the team on any drives and Manziel seems like he is the same boat as Petty and it's year 2. Of course the fact that Manziel is also a fucking clown probably doesn't help.

He might start a couple games once we're out of the playoff picture, although I'm sure Bowles is going to throw in Geno first to see what he's got to offer. But next year I think this is Petty's team. I think Fitz will be back, but more as a mentor like Brunell used to mentor Sanchez. Fitz' arm is barely good enough to win games this year, he's already struggling with some of the typical throws in the NFL to the sideline and down the field to be effective so I highly doubt it's gonna get better by next year, it'll only get worse. Geno I think will be traded or allowed to walk this offseason (not sure what his contract status is right now), I don't see Macc and Bowles putting this franchise on his back at any point. There seems too big of a rift in the locker room.

I don't see Petty being a factor until at least year 3 of his contract.
Geno is signed through next season so it doesn't make much sense cutting or trading him unless we sign a FA who is capable of taking over the team long term.
Petty has a lot to learn.

Petty will be ready when he shows the coaches he can accurately read a defense. Not sooner nor later. How long that takes depends on the QB coaches and Petty himself.

That said he's already got the arm talent, competitiveness, toughness, confidence and leadership qualities to succeed.

    based on history, never.
optimistically he competes for qb1 or 2 next year and allows us to cut geno or fitz and add another developmental qb to the roster.

...once we're out of the playoffs. Wow that is quite pessimistic. Did you misspeak or do you believe there will be games that don't matter towards the end of the year?

Petty needs to ride the bench for a year or two just like it used to be done in the NFL. Eventually everything old is new again. I'm hoping Bowles & co are old school enough for that.

Didn't mean it to come off that way, I do expect us to make the playoffs.

Based off the history of qbs drafted, drafted by the nyj and drafted in the 4th round. I'd say the odds are pretty stacked against the kid. I know its blasphemous around here to think that but its a bit pie in the sky to think he is the saviour we been waiting for.

Being drafted by the Jets is completely irrelevant considering this is a brand-new front office almost top to bottom.

Fourth round part I do agree on though. He was drafted so late because he didn't play in a pro style offense but was drafted regardless because of everything else. He's got all the tools necessary, I think most of us are just hoping that he will be able to overcome the challenges of learning a new offense and put it together in the next two years or so.

TL;dr - I'm just hoping for the best because he's got the tools to be a good QB.

I don't think we should be expecting much considering the type of offense Petty came from in college.

I'd feel a lot better about him turning into a decent pro if he was a guy that came from a pro style offense and was coming back from an injury.

It's been said before but I don't think our QB of the future is on the roster right now.

At this point is would be smart to grab a guy early next draft and either let Fitz roll out there for another year or get Brees.

If the Jets were smart, they wouldn't let him see the field until Year 3 at least.. Guy is nowhere near ready.. You see the school he came from? They put up 60+ points a game, meaning that conference (Big 12) plays zero defense..

Lets do this thing right for once and groom him into a machine, not throw him into the fire and destroy his confidence like we do with every other QB that makes their way into Florham Park.

We just faced a 4th round quarterback now starting in the NFl. Guys like Kirk Cousins give you flashes of hope but also go through stretches of poor play. Perhaps the Jets found lightning in a bottle with Petty though the odds are against him eve being more than a career backup.
