Rivers is the Carmelo Anthony of the NFL; he puts up impressive stats, but never seems to win when it matters.

you can't throw for 500 yards and catch them too..that's the problem with most sports it requires 8 or 4 or 10 other guys to be as good as you are.

Everyone is enamored with the 500 yards stat. He threw over 60 times. That's not normal. That is two games worth of pass attempts.

I think San Diego has had some really talented teams that have failed to live up to their potential during the 2004-2009 period.

Part of that is while Rivers has the physical tools he never seemed to me to have the temperament to win a championship. Doesn't keep his cool under adversity. I also think the coaching has not been at the level needed to win the big ones either. I mean Marty and Norv.

So is Rivers elite? He is if you consider elite to be consistently one of the best 5-10 QBs in the league each year. However if you consider elite to be someone who is a difference maker in a playoff game, well I don't think so.

Dammit. I wish Rivers had played his college ball at Syracuse.

That was eight to nine years ago and he was only a second year starter, why do people crush and write off Quarterbacks off of a few random playoff games early in their careers? Guy played in an AFC Championship on one leg. If it weren't for that injury, the Chargers likely beat the Pats that year (Brady was struggling and Rivers was limited ) and who knows what happens in a superbowl. They weren't any good in 2008, but manged to upset the Colts in a wild card game. He's playing behind probably the worst offensive line in all of football and virtually no running game , yet he still continues to elevate the talent of his team. Not sure if you watched last night's game, but I don't think any QB plays in more compressed pockets than Rivers. His accuracy under pressure and ability to play in tight pockets is among the best.

Really good QB that is not likely to ever win a ring with that organization. Clearly, he's good enough to lead a SB winner, just needs the right pieces around him. I usually rank him in the 5-8 range of QBs. He's been there consistently throughout his career other than that two year down period he had.

Everyone likes to recreate the situation just because a players team lost the game. Everyone ignores the fact that be played with a TORN ACL in that championship game.

I consider a guy that can keep you in any game versus any team with any supporting cast to be elite. His defenses have been pretty horrible the past couple years along with the offensive lines. I hope guys like Romo, Rivers, Matt Ryan get rings so people will remember how truly great they are on a week to week basis.

I wasn't old enough to watch Fouts play. Ask anyone who watched him play and they'll tell you he was a magician at the position. Superbowl wins have become way too defining for the quarterback position. Rodgers, Flacco, Trent Dilfer, Doug Williams, Russell Wilson and Steve Young all have the same amount of rings.

Jake Delhomme and Rex Grossman have both started Superbowls. Are they better than Rivers?

I of course meant NBA Carmelo. His NCAA championship was an epic achievement.

Yep. The Qb position is the most important, but it's still a team game.

I think he's in a weird spot because he definitely isn't in the Brady or Rodgers category but I think he's better than the guys he's lumped with like Romo, Ryan and Flacco. I definitely think he's better than Eli and at this stage I'd say he's probably in the 5-6 range. I think him and Ryan are real close.

My thinking is if you put him on Dallas they are a legit SB contender. Granted they have been hit a bit by the injury bug but they have a lot of weapons. How much better are the Jets with him? The Cardinals ? Imagine him in Cinci instead of Dalton? They might be the best team in the league.

For the record it's all subjective but I think Luck is quite overrated , he's definitely not Peyton and despite the fact that he's made TY Hilton a Pro Bowler he doesn't seem to be elevating the Colts to an elite level. They lucked into the ass kicking they got last year in the AFC title game and if you check their record with him against teams not in the AFC South it's right around .500. They're definitely not a playoff team in the AFC East or North.

I think currently my ratings would be

    Rodgers
    Brady

    Big Ben
    Peyton
    Brees

    Rivers

    Ryan
    Romo
    Flacco
    Luck

No he's def a Romo, Ryan, or Flacco. Plays just like em too. He'll throw 3 to 4 tds but hell also throw some heat scratching ints too. He has an underrated cast around him. Green and Allen are pretty damn good.

That's Rivers in a nutshell - when it counted most with good money (Woodhead) just sitting there on the table ......

This post is odd. Dallas already was a SB contender with Romo. Cinci is undefeated, they already are in the best team in the league debate with Dalton. And I'm not a big Carson Palmer fan but he's looked good, Rivers doesn't improve that team either. Peyton has been more awful than not this year, idk if he even in the top half of QB's you'd want right now. Brees hasn't declined as much yet but he isn't elite anymore either.

Yeah, if we are talking this year and despite the loss at Pitt you definitely have to consider Palmer as a top Qb. As long as he's healthy. I guess for Dalton most would say the jury is out still given the disparity for Cincy of woeful post-season play. But right now he is also in the mix.

Still I would probably take Rivers at @6 or so. He may be hurting, but Brees has not played well and is also hurt. I'd say Rivers is about where Ryan is. Maybe I take Ryan right now as having the edge, but it is close. So I'd go Rodgers, Brady, Ben, Manning P just on momentum, and then Ryan edging Rivers with Brees going to 7 due to his current problems. But then I'd probalby put Dalton and Palmer.
