is Smith where he is supposed to be though......or at least where Fitz is anticipating he will be? we are talking about a rookie here, a little raw on the route tree, who has not had any time to build chemistry with the QB. it will take some time for Smith to grow. for now, i'd rather see more Owusu as the field stretcher provided he is healthy, and i'd like to see some more Kerley. with all the attention Decker and Marshall are getting, i think Kerley could be a chain mover for us.
I'm so confused why this regime hates Kerley so much. I feel like he would be a great fit in this scheme.
if he cant adjust to what fitz is capable of he hurts his own future potential. If all he can do is go deep fast then he better learn a couple other routes.
The continuity and timing isn't there yet between the two. They missed a lot of time working together with DS being out with the rib injury so it's gonna take some time, give it a couple more weeks until we can truly assess it. But the potential with Devin Smith is def there.
WR misses most of his rookie training camp and early-season game time with injury. Also spent most of his college career as a deep threat without mastering the route tree. Fitz entered training camp with a broken leg or was still recovering from a recently broken leg. It's possible that this duo might not "click" for the entire season. Don't think we can place blame anywhere at this stage. Even if Fitz had the arm to consistently hit him 60 yards down the field in stride, the rookie isn't gonna have that route available to him on a consistent basis until CB to respect his route running ability & play him tighter.
I'll be able to answer the original post the first time I see Devin Smith having a clue out there. He's looked really lost in the limited play he's gotten since coming back from the injury.
They probably see him as a limiting element in the scheme since he's not big or fast and his catch box isn't all the impressive.
Smith has skills. Now it is up to the coaches to teach him the pro game. It takes time and if he is willing to listen and work he will be fine. Actually that goes for the other Smith also. Both will be needed. The season is very long.
It is funny. I always wondered why fans on this blog liked Kerley so much. To me he is very ordinary. Speed and size limited. Never makes the kind of catches Cotchery was capable of making. I do not find him exceptionally quick either. He is okay. I totally understand a new regime coming in and paying less attention to him.
I assume you meant to say in the last sentence "cb's start to", and I agree with this realistic assessment. The Jets need a stronger option at 3rd receiver, and with Amaro out the situation with D Smith is unfortunate. But along with you I see too much stacked against him making big progress in the middle of this season. Hope I am wrong.
The offense has been sufficient so far when both Marshall & Decker played having Smith at WR3. If Smith can work through his deficiencies and get on the same page with Fitz over the course of the season it could give our offense a huge boost going into the later part of the season and hopefully playoffs. Let the kid develop on the fly, it's not hurting us too much as of now. If it starts impacting the w/l column, my opinion will probably change.
I thought he has run some poor routes over the middle. Thats what happens when you take away a training camp from a guy who seriously needs it. But I have seen him beat his defender deep 3 or 4 times now, and Fitz couldnt reach him. Until him and Fitz get on the same page on the intermediate stuff, I dont see Smith contributing too much this year. But Smith wont hit his full potential (if he does) until Fitz is long gone.
As long as keeps those safties honest, he's contributing....... but that won't last unless the QB can deliver him the ball in stride on occasion.
I don't really understand, other than that the team plans to move on from Kerley quickly, or they don't like Kerley in the blocking game, or Kerley doesn't spread the field/open the field quick enough. IMO Kerley is much better than Devin Smith at this present time. In the one game of action (Philly) that Kerley received targets he went, 6catches on 11targets 33yds and a score. He also had the 1 handed catch out of bounds that looked like a great feat of athleticism. I think Kerley should be getting more snaps.
I think they need to get their timing down first. It seems like they simply haven't gotten on the same page yet. Funny but true. Hey, at least he's not eating a hot dog on the sidelines or wearing an ugly hair band.
He's a 5th round pick who has over-performed given the expectations with the pick. He was the only WR worth a damn for about 2 years straight when Holmes was hurt, which was often. He was a ray of hope in an offense full of despair and misery. He's not that different than Wayne Chrebet except for the circumstances. He might well make a big contribution if the Jets had to play him. He's not the best option given what they have though. Owusu offers more upside and coverage difficulties for the defense and Enunwa is a better blocker for the overall scheme. The other thing of course is that he's tended to get banged up recently. If you're going to be the scrappy little receiver who could you have to be able to stay on the field once you get there.
