Look at that "blocking" effort by Cumberland. How he lasts on this team is just baffling. Can't block, can't catch, can't run yet he sticks year after year through multiple regimes.
The days of drafting for Teams is long over. Special Teams now gets the scraps and leftovers from the O & D. Westcoff retired just in time. He'd be one miserable bastard with the way the NFL has nurtured Teams. 5 yrs from now there won't even be Special Teams. Field Goals & PATs, that's it.
they should just make it that way now. I'd rather not have special teams than watch this miserable, watered down shit in the NFL we have now. between Goodell's rule changes and the lack of emphasis on special teams in the league it is tough to watch
Yeah, they'll be outlawing punts soon…. What??? ; ) But I do agree. The league seems to be heading down a bad road. Let's face it - it's becoming more of a TV show, not an athletic contest. The fans at the game do not matter. It's TV viewers that matter. It's becoming less and less an event that you want to actually attend in person. TV ratings are so high that they'll be high for a long long time but the product on the field has diminished. It's hyped to no end, and it will take a long time for that to head the other way. All the major sports should thank God for the fantasy leagues we participate in. I'd bet they're responsible for at least 50% of the viewership. Back to the Jets, I am very disappointed with our special teams play. The current Jets don't care about kick/ punt returns. How far we've fallen since Westhoff was in charge of them. Somewhat odd, since Bowes is from the Parcells tree, and Specials were always a Parcells staple.
Yeah, Stacy looked rather sluggish and awkward during his first return out of the end zone to start the game last week. And he didn't look any better as the game progressed........
On a more positive note; Kerley actually looked pretty good returning punts against the Eagles. He gave us good field position several times.
our special teams is pretty bad, but you are way off on some points. 1) quigly doesn't stink. he's a great directional punter and pinning punts inside the 20. that's what the jets wanted. distance isn't everything. 2) we've had a ton of good returners. leon washington, brad smith, percy harvin, Cro (situationally) 3) the biggest loss to special teams was mike westhoff retiring, he was a great coordinator. best in the NFL.
You mean to tell me any of the punters we've cut in the last 2-3 preseasons, we didn't have anyone better than Ryan Quigley? HE SUCKS! Weatherford is without a team.... ahem.. We don't have an explosive or smart return man. Stacy looked terrible Sunday, Kerley isn't smart, and Owusu is meh. He's got better hands to catch the ball..
Kerley actually looked pretty good returning punts Sunday. The commentators even noticed how well he was doing.
Your opinion, my opinion, Quigley chokes all the time, as for those returners, Westhoff's scheme aided most of them...none of those guys was as good as Bobby Humphrey
Agree on Quigley, as for Kerley he had two decent returns and 4 terrible returns, Owusu is not a KR either, Cro is our best but won't do it
Special teams is a disaster, there's not much to complain about right now, even Fitzpatrick looks like a solid option right now. But special teams is just a complete mess. Is Quigley the worst punter in NFL history? He has to be close.
