As of right now the jets are currently 3rd in the league in total offense and last in the league in total defense. This IMO tells us something about the coaching staff.......we need a better DC!
It's not the DC, either we have to be patient w/ the new system or scrap it and go back to the 4-3 where these players had alot of success in the past. Sutton deserves time, I finally saw some baby steps last week so hopefully we continue to take positive steps.
o sorry for typing 3rd ranked offense it was a typo we are actually ranked 19th in offense and 30th total defense.
What a complete 180 from two years ago when we couldn't score in a women's prison yet had one hell of a defensive unit.
I agree, Tackling has been our major problem this year. Plays like screens and shorrt passes have turned into big plays because some of our Defensive players are having trouble tackling. For example, ellis missed a tackle that was right in his grasp this game.
I got excited there thinking we are the 3rd best offensive team. But I guess it was too good to be true.
This says alot about the head coach our defense kinda of sucks yet we still find a way to win games. Dont worry the defense still had a long way to go before the overhaul is done
19th isn't very good. It's even worse when you take into account the fact that we haven't had our bye yet. On the positive side, maybe our defense really isn't that bad either, maybe some of those teams that have had a bye are worse. I don't think its the scheme or coaching though, I think we just don't really have the best players on defense. You saw how we ran all over Detroit when they were missing their DTs, we've basically been like that all season. Also, we really need to stop with the prevent defense, I'd rather we get the ball back and score on offense rather than let the other team score quickly.
Honestly, total yards gained are almost irrelevant when examing offenses and defenses in football. The statistic that correlates the most with winning isn't total yards, its the number of yards you gain on each play (on average). Also, since the difference between the top rushing team in the league and the worst rushing team in the league is usually less than 2 yards (usually something like 4.8 and 3.2 yards per attempt), the statistic that has the greatest influence on winning a game is actually yards per pass attempt. Keep in mind it's not yards per completion, what matters is what sort of production your qb can get on average each time he drops back. That's not to say rushing isn't important, it's important as far as it forces to keep defenses honest, but it rarely wins games for you. So to examine how good our offense and defense actually are, let's take a look at our yards per pass attempt averages. On offense we are averaging 7.59 yards per pass attempt which is 5th in the league. On defense we are averaging 7.07 yards per pass attempt which is 20th. So a difference of about a half a yard on average. This number is pretty good, certainly above average, and reflects our 4-3 record pretty well. Just to back up my point about the importance of this stat a little more, the general consensus in the league is that the two best defensive teams are Denver and Chicago. Well, they happen to rank 1st and 2nd in yards per pass attempt surrendered with 5.72 and 5.88 as their numbers respectively. This is why it really annoys me when people go on and on about how "running football, and stopping the run, is what wins games" because it simply doesn't. Passing the football is what really matters. This is why with one of the worst run defenses in the league and a rushing attack that only got going for the first time a week ago, we can be sitting at 4-3, because so far we've passed the ball effectively, and stopped the pass moderately effectively.
we actually had a very good O until Chad got hurt. we are actually 12th in scoring offense and 27th in points allowed.
as long as our defense stays positive in the turnover ratio, i'm fine with giving up yardage. We do have to get better in the red zone, though. At least with Herm teams you know the red zone defense was going to be good regardless of yardage given up. This defense gives up points, but we've been pretty consistent at producing turnovers.
I haven't looked it up, but I think we are top 5(no type) in scoring offense. Not sure if that is true though.
Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush. This defense suffers most because there is no pass rush. Rattling the QB on a consistent basis make a huge difference in your team's ability to defend the pass. Until we can start reaching the QB, we can keep expecting 900 yds/game against us and at least 2 TDs scored against every 4th qtr.
