2010 was real. 2009 was like OMFG how did we wind up here after being 4-6? The answer: beat 2 bad teams on the road, beat 2 teams that had already clinched playoff spots and sandbagged against us, lost to the 9-7 Falcons at MetLife and oh, yeah, everybody else lost out to let us move from 9th seed to 6th on back to back weekends. But 2010 was real, with a team that was just about to go blooey because it took a nearly perfect collection of focused veteran players with strong locker room skills to handle the emotional chaos that Rex brings alongside all of his gifts.
Circus was here with Mangini and probably Herm also, although he was very good at deflecting it by giving post-game pressers that were so entertaining that he dazzled the media into not complaining about much.
you really thought the circus was here with Mangini and Herm? How so? They were two very low key guys.
You obviously didn't watch the Jets much when Herm was here. Just Youtube him. Mangini spent a summer in 2007 making the player rep live in the rookie dorm and driving him out of town so that he could play a notable JAG who helped destroy the Jets season. He did this alongside numerous Mangenious questions that arose after Tony Soprano dubbed him that in one of the hottest TV shows in history to that point. Then we had the Favre episode where Mangini actually named one of his kids Brett after his wife threatened to divorce him if he named his son Zack Favre Mangini. "How's he even going learn how to pronounce that right!? Mangenious my..."
I remember the introductory press conference for Herm. All he needed was a chattauqua tent. It was pure Jimmy Swaggart stuff.
I thought Herm was just what the Jets needed. A breath of fresh air in an organization that had driven the last breath of fresh air out of town after 1 season in 1994. Parcells was so dominant that he was the Jets while he was here. That's why they were so good when he was on the sidelines given their talent and also why 2000 turned into such a rollercoaster. Just like you can't have 2 starting QB's you can't have 2 de facto head coaches. I liked Groh too but he was never going to be large and in charge with Parcells looking over his shoulder.
A little different perspective when we evaluate Jet coaches from my view point. It hard to compare anything after the first year or may be even two. Rex inherited a much better team from Eric than Todd did from Rex. Not blaming Rex necessarily except for hanging on too long to the likes of Wilson but when he left the team was in shambles. It needed major surgery and resuscitation. Purcell brought instant credibility to the Jets, but he had a strong hand in mortgaging the future to make us successful out of the gate. It was start all over again when he left. For Todd is way too early to pass any judgment, but what I'm seeing so far is spectacular, plus he is blessed with a GM that works hand in glove with his needs. If I see steady progress year after year, a competitive team on the field every Sunday and a playoff history in the making I will be beyond happy. I don't much place a pass/fail assessment of his performance on the fact that he takes the Jets to the playoffs his first two years or not, but rather steady progress for the long run. But, sure as hell would die of joy if we crack the playoffs this year and shut all the experts up.
For once, I feel comfortable the GM and HC are on the same page. Both will progress and grow together. Through 2 games, I really like what Bowles brings to the table. I love his philosophy on generating turnovers, putting players in position to succeed. These 2 things in particular are Anti-Rex to the tee. He's also putting his imprint on the offense, he's going with the players he wants out there - even though Kerley is getting a bad wrap right now. These things, this is how SB aspirations are TRULY created, how they are molded in a sense. GM and HC are on the same page.
i can't recall a Jets GM not being on the same page as the coaches, outside of recently of course.. Idzik was unique in that way...
I dont think making him Coach of the year is putting the cart before the horse at all. Look how far we moved up in Power rankings
I think the last time was Rex and Tanny in 2010, which was a total of 1 season. I think they knew what pieces to get and how to get them that season alone. After losing to the Steelers, I don't think they were even close to being on the same page. Evident by the "Stephen Hill" comments and such. Idzik ... yeah let's not even comment on that one ...
The fact that Kacy Rodgers coordinated their defense last year should help us. Bowles also coached them a couple years ago. He said Rodgers probably knows what they're trying to do which I though sounded a bit weird but we'll see.
Maybe a reverse Samson and trim that nasty lookin beard! He looks like one of the crew from "Mountain Monsters"
