Surprised no one is discussing this right now. Devin Smith listed as probable for the game tomorrow. Will be his first game debut
"And on Friday, Smith practiced in full. Bowles said Smith would be "probably probable" but that the Jets would "work him out before the game, but I doubt he'll play." http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/09/cleveland_browns-jets_injury_report_maybe_devin_sm.html
He's not playing not because of health reasons but because he's got a lot of catching up to do. He might not even be ready to play in week 2.
It could be a bit of gamesmanship from Bowles but I doubt it, I don't think he plays week one. Kid missed the entire pre-season and a lot of practices, like someone said he might not even play week 2. Even if he does play week two it would probably be on a limited snap count.
If he's healthy, the only time I'd put him in this week is if we need a hail mary with one second on the clock. He needs practice. Receiver is a super hard position to adjust to in the NFL.
It's kind of confusing because all of this info was posted in the other Devin Smith thread... that he created. Oh well, I'm just happy to see some positivity.
This thread is like the first inning of the season in Major League. Willie Mays Hayes, excuse me bunt up the line for a single....and picked off of first base. *jagoff arm motion* I think Devin Smith has a lot of potential. I don't think we'll see much of it this year, and we'll see zero of it week 1. Remember, Geno Smith has a big arm that can make plays in the vertical passing game (did to Decker for a few 40+ yard passes last year, and Decker isn't a burner). Ryan Fitzpatrick....does not. What Genius Geno did in not paying IK Superpunchout his $ 600 dollars was- accidentally- marginalize Devin Smith over to the sidelines of the offense. I think we can still be a functional, good offense with Fitzpatrick, but we aren't a vertical passing game kind of offense. We might hit 20-30 yard plays, but we'll be doing it with throws inside the first 15-20 yards of scrimmage, and counting on Decker, Marshall et all to make YAC. If Ryan doesn't turn the ball over, it might be fine, but Devin Smith is the kind of guy you use in man coverage where the offense rolls a safety over one way with QB eye movement and by loading WRs on that side, and then you go back to the other side and throw a bomb to Devin after he beat a guy 1 on 1. That is not Ryan Fitzpatrick's game. So...Devin could still have an impact this year, but it'll be diminished a bit because I think our offensive mindset has changed with the QB shift. We may win more this way (or, certainly beat ourselves less), but, it'll be less dynamic of an offense from what I'm seeing so far (granted, just vanilla pre-season).
I hope he doesnt play. That would be irresponsible as an organization and hopefully this f/o is moving in the right direction. He's not in football shape right now and would be at risk of injuring another part of his body and missing more time.
i don't expect much from Smith the first half of this season. he's a very raw WR. needs to improve on the rest of his route tree, and gain experience lining up in multiple spots. missing most of OTA's and training camp certainly didn't help in that growth. i think Owusu will line up on the outside in the interim, providing that outside speed, while giving us the flexibility to kick Marshall inside. hopefully Smith starts contributing in roles later on in the year.
I created it thinking he was playing considering he's labeled as "probable". Didn't read what Bowles had later stated
If he's good to go there's no reason why he can't get out there and run 5-7 flies tomorrow IMO at least. It adds another element to the gameplan and whether they know that's all he's doing or not they still have to adjust to it.
I'd be excited to see him play as that'd mean we'd of blown the brownies out and we're in garbage time. I think Devin might be the pick of the draft class for us and once he gets up to speed I honestly think he'll be pushing for that #2 WR spot by seasons end.
Wouldn't mind if he sat out the first few games in order to get up to speed before putting him out there.
I don't see why he'd be 'probable' but not play. I understand that he's missed way too much time to be fully incorporated but I'd activate him and at least run some decoy go routes. It keeps the defense stretched and honest against an offense that doesn't have many deep threats otherwise.
