NFL.com is reporting the Jets cut both QB Matt Flynn and QB Josh Johnson. Flynn plays very similar to Fitz, looked good after less than a week of practice, throwing to guys that won't make the team, and would be an easy plug in if Fitz did get hurt. If we were going to cut both and go into week one with Petty as the #2, shouldn't we have given the 4th pre-season game to him to get more experience? Wow, why even sing them and give them playing time. Maybe we will resign Flynn after week 1 so his contract isn't guaranteed. I still am hoping Smith never sees the field in a Jets uniform, regardless what happens.
Perhaps the Jets were so impressed with Petty that they felt it was more important to keep him healthy going into week 1 rather than the extra playing time vs scrubs. Apparently Flynn already used the provision where your salary is guaranteed after being on the roster week 1, so it wouldn't have applied this year. Seems like he won't be coming back.
Ideally, I'd have Flynn over Fitzpatrick, since I think he has more upside, can throw downfield, and is younger. Leaving Geno aside for a moment, I'd feel better about Flynn being the "Mr. Now" and Petty being the future. Fitzpatrick is decent, but nothing more than that, and should be gone after this year. I could see Flynn starting for 2 years and handing it over to Petty after that. If we're still starting Fitzpatrick in 2016, I'm going to be really sad. I understand keeping Fitzpatrick as the # 1 QB right now since Flynn wasn't on the roster until 2 weeks ago, but I do wish we had ended up with him.
Why does Geno deserve another chance? All because he was a big name coming out college drafted in the 2nd round? Players seem to get unlimited chances if they are big name drafted high (i.e. Tebow).
For once we have a front office that gets it. If fitz goes down we are fucked. No Johnson or Flynn is going to save the game any better than Petty will. But instead of wasting a very valuable 53 roster spot on a guy that will not make a difference lets stash a player with some upside that will help this team win games. This was best news of the day in my opinion.
Wow. If they really did this I am impressed. They know exactly what they want and will not settle for what we saw and probably thought was okay Thursday night. They are thinking on a higher plain than me, for sure.
if smith is healthier than reported i suppose it makes sense. if he is not and the plan is to bring one of those two back after week 1 i suppose that makes sense too. in any event 3 qbs is enough.
The beat reporters have been talking for a week about how both of them would be cut and then one re-signed after game 1 to avoid guaranteeing his salary. Why make a thread about something that everybody saw coming a mile away and that was explained in detail at the time they saw it?
let's just get this out there. For all of the Sanchez haters that were praying for Matt Flynn. It's clear now, isn't it...that What told you then was correct. Matt Flynn sucks.
One of them will be back after Week 1. They need 3 healthy QBs, but when Geno gets back one will be cut. No reason guaranteeing a contract to a guy who most likely won't be on the roster the whole season.
