It's a real thing though. When you're chucking around a football there's a chance you get hit in the head/face by said football. It's a small chance but when you're talking millions of dollars in investment, which is where the Jets are with Geno right now, you don't want people exposing themselves to any risk at all.

A pretty girl walks by and Geno turns his head and he gets hit in the ear or cheek by the ball. Without a pre-broken jaw it's embarrassing but not really a big deal. With the injury and the surgery it could be career-ending.
