Slightly concerned (a couple players in particular). I'm not going to heap on Cromartie like others are because this is obviously a press man defense and the starting D played almost exclusively off zone coverage, so it's obvious that this game isn't even remotely indicative of what Bowles wants to do. I'm also not worried about tackling, which was another major issue, because that usually develops throughout August and is almost always sloppy in PS game number one. However: - Calvin Pryor is still taking horrible angles to fill gaps, which is bad no matter what defense you're playing - Our tight end group is absolutely anemic. Might be the worst bunch in the NFL. Is Cumberland really going to see significant time? - Demario Davis got absolutely juked out of his shoes a couple times. - Way too many drops from the 2nd and 3rd string receivers. That's all that really concerned me from yesterday. Both of the long passes Stafford completed against the starting defense were through simple zones, which we'll hardly ever show when it counts. We gave up a couple long runs, which I'll chalk up to preseason tackling and no Wilkerson. Hopefully we appreciate how much we need him now. I don't think this defense needs both Sheldon and Mo to function, but it definitely needs 1 on the field (it was fine for the games that Mo was hurt last year).
You can't judge anything off of one meaningless game. The fact that anybody is even 'moderately concerned' is crazy. Let it play out, please.
No surprise here except maybe Cumberland's ineptitude. He's looking like Steven Fckn Hill out there and that's pathetic. Not sure what the deal is on Amaro but the Kid needs to be on the field more. Another Idzik pick floundering. I'm not surprised that they pulled Fitz early. We don't need another episode of our starting Qb getting hurt in a meaningless game do we? Petty needs real time snaps when it doesn't hurt if he makes a mistake. I like that they gave the kid time last night and honestly, I don't know if bringing in another QB to back up Fitz really is the answer. Let Petty do the garbage time work and learn. Our D is a work in progress as they have to transition from Ryan to Bowles. The first game usually results in a mulligan but if the D looks like this in October????? Based on last night's play, I'd have to say our D has been overrated. Lets all hope that changes before its too late to matter.
agree on all counts. as far as the D goes though, as i said in the other thread, im slightly concerned about what seemed like a lack of effort. its game 1 of the preseason, so i want to chalk it up to trying to not get hurt and vanilla packages, but i mean some guys (cro especially stood out) were basically play 3/4 speed out there. and idk what the deal is with amaro. any update on his shoulder? i mean after watching that abortion of a TE combo in cumby and davis, i feel like he should be playing by default.
Even that can be basically attributed to the fact they haven't really hit anyone in a few months... I'll be concerned if it's still happening preseason week 3. Until then just knocking the dust off.
A lot of missing pieces which sucks. Everyone in the league will face injuries, suspensions, and missed time. It's a week to week game. As usual for Jets fans our offense is suspect #1
It's bad, typical at this point, but at least we get players back weeks 4-8. Rich, milliner, Geno (bad or good).
Not concerned .... I think if you watched HC presser you saw someone that knew what he was going to do to fix the problems... If its 3rd PS game and we still have miscommunication on D then you should be concerned....
Are you actually concerned though? Missing rich and wilk. Wilk will be there week 1. This is going to be one of the best Jets defenses we have ever seen. We will get beat when we continuously have linebackers in coverage, but keeping the D off the field is the bigger issue.
If I expected the playoffs or a division title I would be seriously worried. Being that I expect 8 wins at most, not so much.
For me the goal is to be competitive the entire season so that just about every game is exciting and decently played. Before this game I was concerned since this has not been the case for 3 years. After the game I'm even more concerned since it looked like the exact kind of game I don't want to have happen--uncompetitive and not well played. Anyone who's not concerned should state what their goals are for the season. If you are fine with suck, then no reason to be concerned. If you want a playoff run, how can you not be concerned? What did you see last night that confirms this is a playoff bound team?
Has Fred Davis been picked up since being released by the Pats? If not, we definitely have to give him a call.
