Maccagnan does NOT have a spotty past with his drafting. He was never the GM of the Texans. He didn't make the final decisions. Please get your facts straight.

I disagree. Marty was awful here, and not just with Geno. To my knowledge, Marty has never developed a QB, never adapted his offense to fit the talents of his players, but instead just ran a WCO and everyone had to fit into those schemes/rules.

Well he was the director of college scouting with the Texans and was obviously a factor in their drafts. Many brought up the fact that there were some suspect picks made while he was in that position. While he wasn't the GM, we only had that body of work to go off of. I am not blasting his career, but obviously the Texans don't have the track record with their drafts like the Packers, Ravens, or Steelers have.

I mentioned Marty, wasn't the right fit here - it's definitely because of Geno Smith. Marty M made an old Jeff Garcia relevant again in 2006. If you look at history, Chan never really developed a good QB either, I mean there's Ryan Fitzpatrick, but c'mon.

Chan's far more innovative no doubt, I just preferred Marty's offense. Marty had to dumb down the offense for Geno Smith by running more shotgun.

How many SBs have the Texans won? None to my recollection right? That means he accomplished nothing up to this date:mad:

I am tempted to get into the derailer discussion of Marty, but on Bowles...

On D, I think he actually did a better job for the Cards than Ryan did with the Jets. He also seemed to work very well with Bruce Arians, imo one of hte real up and coming top HC's in the league right now. It will be interesting to see how the Cards' D does with Bowles no longer there, though.

Anyway on Bowles I also think his demeanor is just what the Jets need right now. I love his temperament and demeanor, and after Ryan, that is a great thing. Ryan was fun and all that, but he was destined to not last in NYC. Bowles I can see sticking for a long time.

But before we get to a long time from now, the key question is how his CS will do on the offensive side. I have a lot of questions about how well Gailey will do, and there seemed to be some communications and perhaps decisionmaking issues on that question of to what extent Smith was guaranteed the starting spot. Aside from the usual consideratoin that a rookie HC needs to show what he can do once the games are played, that bit with Gailey is concerning. That and that I am not sure about the Gailey hire in the first place.

But on the whole I think, so far, the Bowles hire was and is great. I am not a usual member of the rose colored glasses homer crowd here, but on Bowles, I am very optimistic.

And oh yeah also who would have been a better hire from the available candidates than Bowles? I don't think the Jets missed out on anyone better who was available, so there's that, too.

what I want is lo0ngterm success, I fully expect Bowles and this staff to give us a jolt and have us winning quickly but can it be sustained? Our last 5 coaches have all had winning records and improved upon previous season but none could sustain long term.

    Parcells: 1-15 year before, 9-7 year 1
    Groh: 8-8 year before, 9-7 year 1
Herm: 9-7 year before, 10-6 and playoffs year 1
Mangini: 4-12 year before, 10-6 and playoffs year 1
Rex: 9-7 year before, 9-7 and playoffs year 1

we'll be greatly improved this year but are we building to be a playoff caliber team on an annual basis or another quick year or 2?

Bowles comes across, to me at least, as someone who willingly subjugates his own ego for the good of the team. There hasn't been a misstep yet.

I'm not sure we'll be "greatly improved" this year, but the pieces are falling into place for future success.

So many things can go wrong during a season...but the one thing that a team has little control over is injuries. Bowles has proven that he is pretty good at dealing with that.

Quit being such a Debbie Downer.

You'll get your Lombardi soon enough.

Champ & I may be gone though...

The Jets don't get lucky. It's just God being unable to f*ck us over for once.

I told you junc. Stick with the Jets board, stay away from BS Forum and you are golden. I love your football posts. This is exactly what I think. Sustainability. Bowles looks like a decent coach. Will he be able to create a Jets team that wins regularly? Still to be seen. I have high hopes but I have been wrong plenty of times in the past.

I loved him while he was a coach with the dolphins, didn't want him to go, lobbied for him to be the successor to sparano, and got rejected both times..I think you all will love him..I was a huge Bruce Arians fan, before he got his chance to be a head coach I thought he was gonna be a star when he did, he got it in indy, proved it, then went to zona and proved it more, so him hiring bowles confirmed to me what I thought, that bowles has the goods...lucky bastards...well its not luck, your GM made the right call.

The real question for me is what Chan Gailey is gonna do. I like Maccagnan, I like Bowles. I am not sold on Chan Gailey at all.

For the love of god, I hope we don't see one snap of the wildcat this year!

Gailey used the wildcat while he was in buffalo, hopefully he just scratches it from the playbook

The Texans have drafted just fine. They've drafted a ton of studs and like other teams have drafted duds.

I'm skeptical on using packers and steelers, particularly packers bc they are so system driven. They can plug and play.

We're already blaming the OC? Too funny.

I hope Bowles can impart to Chan the importance of putting the player(s) in the best spot to succeed.
