I think the rookie wage scale almost works against keeping teams together in the long run. Every star player is looking to make an absolute killing on their second contract because if they're a star they got rooked on the first one. We can't sign Mo to a reasonable deal that might let us keep him because his first contract was the reasonable deal. He's going to wind up getting overpaid by another team out there on the open market, which is the only place where reasonable deal is never part of the conversation for a 26 or 27 year old player. We made a mistake bringing Revis back. Not because he doesn't improve the team but because every young player we draft who is worth a big deal on the open market is going to go looking for one now.
Our D cannot be compared with 1 of the all time great defenses at this time. And Geno isn't 1/10th of the QB hat Dilfer was that year.
I totally disagree. The first contract was not just a "reasonable deal." The player was a rookie and hadn't done anything in the NFL yet. The rookie wage scale just brought some sanity to the NFL and stopped the ridiculous contracts that were being handed out to rookies who had never played a down in the NFL. If players play at a very high level during their rookie contract, then their second contract should be significantly better, and not just a "reasonable deal" imo. Mo may wind up being overpaid as a FA, but if he indeed is seeking Watt money, he will be disappointed, because I don't think he'll get it. He may get more than the Jets are willing to pay, but he doesn't play at Watt's level and shouldn't and won't get that level a contract. I also disagree regarding Revis. I don't think it will serve as an example or influence any other contract. Revis is a special situation. Every young players is not a lock for the HOF or one of the best players ever at his position. You're talking apples and oranges and one has nothing to do with the other.
The rules were different then, too. Today's NFL simply isn't built to allow a defense to be that exceptional, no matter how good they are. The Jets D won't be able to win a Super Bowl, no matter how elite it is, if the offense can't score. That Ravens team was 15 years ago. There is just no rational argument to try and project that into today's NFL.
there is special and then there is 2000 ravens special. No matter how good we are i cant see us being that good. the ravens Defense and special teams outscored their opponents in the playoffs and superbowl. the technically didnt even need to play offense to win a championship. It doesnt matter if our passing game is better, we wouldnt match the dominance of their defense and special teams. even then 2000 ravens likely wouldnt be as good as the 2000 ravens with todays rules and how the game is called.
2000 Ravens defense were better at LB and S than the current Jets defense, current Jets are better at CB. Probably a push at DL. Our defense won't be able to dominate at the level of the 2000 Ravens simply because of the pass friendly rules
I should point out a couple of things. We had only 11 takeaways last season...the worst in the NFL. The 2000 Ravens had 49. The 2000 Ravens defense I think scored about 7 points a game. We were nowhere close to that last season. To say that we have suddenly become that team after a few offseason additions is crazy. Yeah we probably have better WRs than the 2000 Ravens. But the 2000 Ravens also had Jamal Lewis, Priest Holmes, and Shannon Sharpe.
Why are comparisons even being made at this point? We've seen flashes of success in the past but with the new coaching staff, we have no idea how the new philosophy will affect the playstyle and results of the defense. Cart is well before the horse right now.
In the NYJ world the 68 team was the zenith & every team before 68 or after 68 is well below the zenith right?
Of course I saw them play, it's not the 1968 Jets it's the 2000 Ravens and they were one of the greatest defenses of all time, which kind of makes your thread look stupid as hell.
I think this is the way we should go this season no matter who is the starting Qb. Neither guy is that good. We have a good defense but they do need time off the field. We have more good players on offense at skill positions. Turnovers killed this team. I say we have a conservative offense and the Qb position is : game manager.
