George Sauer (middle) - 3 weeks prior to Super Bowl III Not to go over the top, but some "inside #83" : A poem "Father" written by Sauer after the death of his father to Alzheimers (Sauer expressing a fear that he too may end up with it): Wind-driven fight blows in my marrow, light narrows and clouds invite. Bent by long shadows, longer time, an old man dances in my heart — his broken brain rattles mine.
Wow that is bad. REALLY wanted to like that guy. I remember when he was drafted, I don't think I remember a happier dude to get drafted by the Jets. _
One of my very favorite Jets photos. One of my original favorite jets, we hardy knew ye. I was maybe 12-13 when he retired, had no idea why. _
Always my favorite day when the George Sauer pics start showing up!! Doesn't even look like he's wearing shoulder pads. _
George retired saying he considered football, "dehumanizing". His Dad said he didn't like the regiment of being told where to be, what to do and when to do it all the time. Edit: Sauer dreaded the thought of dying like his father did, from Alzheimer's, which he did. When playing sandlot football with my brothers and friends, I WAS George Sauer, dammit.
Me TOO! My older brother always got to be who he wanted to be so when he was QBing, he was Namath and when he was receiving, he was Maynard. I was always Fran Tarkington and George Sauer. _
Side trip: Remember when wearing white cleats was controversial? Now you have to kill someone to create a stir...*cough*
