Parcells is HOF because he can evaluate talent and is capable of giving an undrafted Qb from a small college a chance. Whereas Rex is a guy who puts a tatoo on his ass and gives 60 plus starts to a Qb who sucks.

Rex will re-insert his starting QB in a meaningful preseason game in a useless sacrifice to nothingness, and then use Matt Simms' inner knowledge to kiss Phil Simms' ass...

You don't see the issue here?

For about the 5th time now... Rex saw him every day in practice. He thought so much of him that he didn't give him a chance when the QBs ahead of him were dogshit. He thought al much of him he CUT him when the team only had two QBs. The rest of the league thought so much of him that he spent the entire year on our practice squad. An entirely new regime came in and thought so much of him they drafted a QB, traded for another QB and brought in an undrafted FA. Then the rest of the league thought so much of him AGAIN that they passed on his minimum deal on waivers.

And where does he end up? Back with the coach whose biggest problem is not knowing his ass from his elbow when it comes to offense.

Matt Simms isn't catching hate. 99% of us are just calling it the way it is. The people catching hate are the ones acting like Simms is anything more than a run of the mill 3rd/4th string QB

Seriously 14 pages on Matt fucking Simms??? This is the reason why I don't post as much in the offseason.

Let's put it this way, if Rex Ryan thinks highly of you as a QB, that's basically the kiss of death for you and your team's offense. The most clueless Head Coach in pro football when it comes to offense.

Matt Simms is a career practice squad guy who's lucky to still say he wears an NFL uni. Nothing more, nothing less.

you're talking out both sides of your mouth. this entire thread most of your argument against simms has been that he's a third stringer therefore he sucks. then the guy who made him third string on the depth chart signs him and you say it's because he doesn't know dick about offense.

I don't think simms is anything special and I agree that rex knows dick about offense but your argument is and has been awful, as usual.

You're one of those guys who thinks raising your voice makes your argument better, aren't you?

Nevermind the whole "the entire league passed on him twice" and "a new regime cut him"...

I'm not saying that Simms or anybody is good. But I'm not categorizing them as non-NFL until they get a fair shot on the field. Rex seeing him in practice and not starting him is a legit point, I'm not denying that. For the most part there's only one starting job. And a decision has to be made. But obviously the wrong decisions were made so you can't hold that up unless the Qb play was at least average. Even if you're backup to a great Qb like Cassel was and never get a chance to play imo you can't be categorized as no good. Cassel got a chance to play after a few years of riding the pines and played well enough to get a contract and start with a few other teams. So Matt Simms: if he got 12 starts or more. IMO he'd do alright not great. Well enough to be considered a legit NFL Qb. That's a guess. He could be worse than Geno, I don't know and either do you.

My beef also is that these supposed 1st string caliber Qbs get a million chances and the guys you categorize as 3rd string get none or one. Greg McElroy got exactly one and he was horrible. But no more chances after that like Sanchez and Smith got. Why then are Mark and Geno allowed to shit the bed so long.

I get it. your opinion is based on everyone else's opinion except when it goes against that.

It would be cool if you had something of substance to share rather than a general appeal to authority. Like maybe talk about how simms lacks any sort of touch passing, route anticipation, struggles when his first read isn't available, holds onto the ball for too long and doesn't seem to do a good job of reading defenses. Repeatedly referring to what others think gets boring real quick and isn't all that convincing.

NFL decision makers make mistakes all the time.

That has been talked about ad nauseum for years. At this point, we still have people saying he deserved a chance and even some that say he outplayed Sanchez in preseason as a reason why he deserved a shot (nevermind the 3rd string defense, you know that though). This argument is a whole different one. Some people just hate the incumbent so much they are willing to make ridiculous claims about the potential successor.

Paging MoProblems96 so he can respond to being called out about being completely wrong.

Since Simms was activated 10 days before the Cardinals lost their first string QB to injury

    ;)

We have no way of knowing how he would have performed in a game because he never had a chance to start or get first team practice reps, and he should have been given that chance given how bad Geno sucked in games and how much of the fan base wanted to see him. If he was given an opportunity this all would have been settled and you likely would have been right that he is not a starter. Giving him a shot wouldn't have mattered to the Jets either way.

We do know he was good enough to compete in 2015 Jets training camp, and we also know from David Gerrard that Geno is a better practice player than a game player. From Cimini:

In two seasons with the New York Jets, Geno Smith has had four backups --Michael Vick, David Garrard, Brady Quinn and Matt Simms, who was released on Thursday. Also Thursday, one of the Geno Four -- all of whom are unemployed -- offered his opinion on Smith, painting a less-than-flattering picture of the Jets' quarterback.

It was Garrard, who appeared on the NFL Network's "NFL Total Access" show.

"I definitely think Geno has the ability to be a pretty good quarterback. I just think sometimes he’s worried about the outside noise," Garrard said. "He’s worried about what his teammates think, what his coaches think, what the media thinks, what the fans think and he’s not just concentrating on his game and just making the plays that he should be making. You can see a lot of times in practice and in the meeting room, he’s spot on; he knows exactly what to do. But he has moments where he’s not doing that."

So Gerrard thinks what alot of us think. Geno is emotionally fragile. Maybe, just maybe Simms was one of those guys that plays BETTER in games then he does in practice? I have nothing to base that on, other than he looked like a bit of a baller in the games he played in. But again we will never know. I hope he sucks now. Because if the light goes on for him in Buffalo and he beats the Jets I will be seriously pissed.

All of those guys you mentioned somewhere down the line had chances to play (starts, significant backup duty) except Simms. What would have been the big deal just to see what he could do. How is that going to hurt your team esp if you're going nowhere. We got the same kind of feedback in 2012 about Tebow. He's horrible, he can't throw, etc. etc. Yet he won games including a big one against us. Rex and those fans wanted us to just stay with Mark and lose.

Simms got his "shot" against Miami in 2013 after they benched Geno. He was awful, Simms got his "shot" against the Chiefs after Geno got benched and Vick caught a concussion. Both instances reaffirmed what we suspected, he can't play. When you are an undrafted free agent, those constitute as a "shot".

He didn't get no shot. He was 9-18 in that Fins game which was basically over when they put him into the game. He threw one red zone pick which was terrible. He never got a start but Geno has 29. so is that a fair comparison as for opportunity. You don't give him a start but you judge him on a few quarters of mop up duty. But on the other hand Mark and Geno get a million chances no matter how bad they play.

Opportunity is mostly about investment and costs. It's also about talent but that's a factor that is already mostly considered in the investment and costs category.

If you're a highly drafted QB, 1st or 2nd round, you're going to get more opportunities from the team that invested the pick in you. They have to try to get value out of the pick even if it seems like the pick was not invested well. You have a lot of opportunities because your team has a lot invested in you.

If you're a mid-rounds QB, 3rd or 4th round, you're going to keep a roster spot for awhile but you're only going to get secondary opportunities as long as your team has other options that they're more highly invested in. The first year you might get an extended evaluation since the team is validating the pick and trying to figure out what they have but after that you're dependent on the people in front of you on the depth chart for your opportunities. Odds are you're a career backup QB and will labor in that anonymous status unless the starter gets hurt or falters or another team falls in love with you and wants to make a trade.

If you're a late rounds QB it's all on you. Your team isn't going to look at you particularly hard until you give them a reason to do so. They expect you to be a career backup at best and that's the reality you work in. An injury might give you a shot but then it's all on you to prove you are better than the guy who is hurt. If you falter at any point as a late round pick, well that's it, you're not going to keep the job over other players the team is more highly invested in if you are screwing up.

Most NFL QB's screw up a fair amount in their first few starts. This reality prevents late round QB's from having much of a chance to keep the job even if they're actually good enough to hold it, unless the starter is injured for an extended period in which case they (Tom Brady) might get the chance to screw up and still hold the job.

If you're undrafted, as Matt Simms was, you have almost no chance to get on the field in an NFL game - let alone hold the job. The coach has to love you, which Rex obviously does, and there have to be injuries in front of you and then you have to play lights out to keep the job. You don't get enough practice reps to really show your stuff and you have to be really good in those limited reps. A few mistakes will hurt you a lot because you don't get enough reps to make them fade away. They stand out.

Matt Simms got more than a fair opportunity with the Jets. He had to play lights out in practice to get on the field and he never managed to do anything close to that. He didn't have injuries in front of him to give him an extended look, and that's just the way it goes. In the few opportunities he did get to play in real games he showed flashes at times but nothing more than that.

If your team is highly invested in you flashes of talent can give you more opportunities. If they're not a flash of talent gets a cursory glance and then the coach and GM look back at the people who do more than flash or upon whom their jobs rest because they invested in them.

If he led a td drive and looked competently running the offense that would've given the coaching staff something to think about, maybe Simms starts the following week. They invested more into Geno so they want to get a return in their investment.

Look we all saw the same thing: the Worst of Sanchez and Geno. Almost every single week with a few exceptions. It was a repeat nightmare but Rex wouldn't budge. I'm talking about not one start. And judging him on mop up duty which overall wasn't that bad. A lot better than the guy he relieved.
