"For now, allow yourself to fantasize over a defensive line of Williams, Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Damon “Snacks” Harrison, with Revis and Cromartie on the back end of Todd Bowles’ hybrid defense that will keep Smith or Fitzpatrick in every game."
You have to be happy with the pick, this guy is a superior talent, will take our defense to an incredibly high level. It's hard to believe our great fortune that he was there at the 6. Arguably the best player in the draft. Still bummed MM wasn't there, but unlike last year, we didn't pass on the QB, we just never had a shot. This defense is going to be a ton of fun to watch. Wow. _
Nothing to understand, they had him rated as the bpa and claimed all along they would take the bpa regardless of need or whether he even fits.
How hard is it to How hard is it to understand? MM stuck with what he has been saying all along. They will draft the best player available. I was angry at first because I wanted white but this pick makes a lot of sense. Williams was the best player available and was arguably the best player in the draft. I just hope we don't trade Wilkerson because of it
Love it, high motor, versatile guy that absolutely swallows up QBs and RBs. Love the way he tackles, violent.
I love the pick but I have to admit, this position is at the bottom of the priority list in terms of need. It will make a lot more sense if A) We move Wilk via trade or B) we end up losing Wilk next year due to outrageous contract demands. The reality is that we still have major holes to address on Offense (which I hope we will later on in the draft). Another reality is Jets aren't going anywhere this year and this team is a multi-year project. The good thing is that Williams looks to be the type of core player that you build a team around. This is a deep draft at WR so, who knows. Maybe we will draft a player in 2nd Round who is 90% as productive as White would have been. I would be OK trading Wilk only if it gets us a first rounder next year or some veteran players who are plug and play. Would Tennessee consider moving Mettenberger and a 2nd rounder for Wilk???
Once Mariota, Cooper and Fowler were gone then you cant hate the fact we took arguably the best player in the draft at #6 - this is the sort of pick teams like the steelers and pats get praised for every year - taking the best player that falls to you.
Game is won and lost in the trenches. It was entirely unexpected because we already have a good d-line, but you can never argue with improving that spot, especially with Tom Brady in the division.
Yeah because our awesome D-Line these past few years really stopped him, how many Super Bowl appearances and a SB win last year! Not like you have to score points in the NFL to win, keep drafting defensive linemen, it's worked so well these past four years as we've been perennially one of the worst teams in the NFL over that span.
Having this guy fall into our lap at 6 is NOT a bad thing at all! I love it. The offense it looking to be abysmal yet again this year, but at least the defense will be Hellish for opposing offenses.
What's hard to understand is how he's going to be utilized and what impact it has on the rest of our DL. If he going to be a rotational player? Is he going to actually improve our line or is it just a lateral move? In a vacuum the pick is great but when you account for the specifics and particulars it becomes a lot harder to judge. I mean, if you use a 6th overall pick on a situational player I don't like that, that's bad. If he bumps out another recent first round DL pick then that's not great either in the sense that it renders a prior pick obsolete. Also it could result in the trading of Wilkerson, who is really good and obviously can't be for a first round pick this year so will we get value for it? Does the pick result in Mo walking in FA? So the confusion isn't the pick itself but the implications of the pick.
i thought Mariota, Cooper, Fowler and Williams were the 4 best players in the draft. was really hoping Mariota or Cooper would fall to us, but when they didn't, Williams was clearly the best player out there. so i have no problem with the pick at all. my only disappointment was that one of the other guys didn't fall instead.
He was BPA. At least we didn't take a bad player like we did with most of our picks last year. The top of draft didn't align perfectly with our needs, but that's nobody's fault.
but that is 90% down to the quality of our QB play and there haven't been any "cant miss" QB prospects we have passed on or top tier free agent QBs we ignored the last 4 years - we cannot just magic up a franchise QB we have to catch a break (and lets face it, its the Jets we are talking about)
