Idzik did have a good big picture plan, and the Jets benefited from it this off season. Problem is you have to also execute in the short term as well and his draft choices as a reflection of his talent evaluation capabilities simply revealed he wasn't the best person to have in charge of executing that long term strategy even though he was setting the Jets up to be in a great position to pull it off.

It's the same thing Mike is facing just the opposite. He has shown he can identify short term solutions when he has cap space, as you have pointed out, but what can he do in the draft. Doing one well doesn't indicate he will do well with the other.

In all faireness, we don't know what Idzik would have done this offseason, and the next.

I'm a fan of Mac's, but if he were really "Magic": he'd cast a spell on Cromartie so he'd never again forget his kid's names, he would have gotten Revis to sign for the veteran's minimum, and Woody would have a full luxurius head of hair. That would be magic!

He made the moves a GM would make in a rebuilding situation. This current Jets regime is not in rebuild mode. Two different circumstances in the beginning of their regimes. Draft picks takes time to develop. I never understood why Idzik was held to this unrealistic standard where he had to hit on all his picks.

Do you think he would have signed Revis?

The current regime is absolutely in rebuild mode. How are they not?

The standard wasn't that Idzik had to hit on all his draft picks; that's a Strawman nobody has claimed.

When you sign all these veterans who are in their late primes you are definitely in win now mode. The problem was that we as a whole weren't patient enough to see it through.

No one literally came out and said Idzik had to hit on all his picks. But when folks go on about how we had 12 picks and we got nothing is a complete lie and an over exaggeration.

I personally think Idzik made some poor choices. I think there's a chance we praise that 2014 draft a little bit more if Shaq Evans, and IK make some contributions. Especially Shaq Evans.

Maybe he did but it's too early to say right now. People bashed Pryor all year (to some extent I did too) but I went back and watched the games and he was much better than I remembered him being.

Yes he's quite magical. He managed to slay the ruthless agents of Darrelle Revis with truckloads of cash and he wears a funny magicians hat

No Idzik critic said he had to hit on all his picks. His problem was he hit on far to few of them, and most of his signings were also not productive enough. Perhaps worst of all was the things he did not do, like not even attempting to get Cromartie to redo his contract, letting him leave and then doing nothing to replace him other than signing Patterson who sucked.

It was no one thing, but it certainly was not your strawman and you know it.

I already addressed your first sentence in a previous post. When you are rebuilding you usually are going after low risk high reward players some work out some give you modest production and some don't work out. When you are rebuilding you are going to play young players in key spots which more times than not leads to losing. He was brought in with the idea/plan of rebuilding. If we were trying to stay competitive then by all means he would deserve all the criticism he got.

You are in effect excusing the handling of the Cb position last off season as intentional, after the fact. I do not recall you or anyone else saying that what ended up happening is what should have happened, and was in some sense necessary to rebuilding the team.

Of course it was not necessary. Not attempting to renegotiate Cro's contract was not necesssary to build up cap space. And I highly doubt it was intentional, either, since they came close to signing DRC only to lose out to the Giants, and they ended up signing Patterson who of couse was not a case of wanting to play young players in key spots.

You are merely making up excuses after the fact. Idzik mishandled the Cb position and it did nothing to help the team rebuild. It did not help Allen, it did not help Pryor. It didn't help SMith, either, what with the D's giving up more points putting pressure on the O to overcome deficits.

I said it last year that we should've resigned Cromartie. However due to his injury the year before I understood WHY they wanted to move on. They had a bunch of young CB's that we're going to be getting a ton of snaps. Patterson was supposed to provide a veteran presence within the corp. Milliner and Patterson were supposed to start along with guys like Walls, Wilson, McDougal, Dowling, Patrick etc battling for spots. That looks like a rebuilding move to me. And it wasn't like Patterson was a bad player either.

They offered DRC less money and for less years the Giants offered more. That's self explanatory. I'm not making excuses for Idzik. They simply did not want to commit long term money to mid prime players. The strategy was to spend the occasional money on players like Decker while developing young players. If they were able to sign DRC it wouldn't have been for the amount he got with the Giants. Rolling over money to sign your own players while sustaining cap flexibility is the key when you're rebuilding. Then when you have a solid to good core in place then you spend like a rich white girl at the mall.

Definitely agree that's why he signed all 3 lbs to 1 year deals, more like win now mode, except no QB, sounds like a recipe for disaster
